Good morning everyone,
I hope you have had a very nice week. I have. It has been quite relaxing and peaceful here at Lane’s End.
Right before my team left Barn 55 for the summer (remember they had to take everything out for the every other year cleaning process) a friend of Anita’s (John’s sister) came to visit the barn.
He is an artist named Pema. He brought John a lovely piece which is meant to bring ‘good luck’. What a very sweet gesture on his part! Many thanks to him. For people in racing…luck is a very precious consideration!
In looking over the entries for this weekend…..the races look to be very exciting. Again, as seems to be the case during the summer seasons, there are quite a few major stakes races running around the country. They have definite implications as far as the road to the Breeders Cup is concerned.
David is currently at Saratoga for the next few weeks working. They have a yearling sale there next week. He also enjoys the opportunity to visit with the other horses he has purchased for clients and see the ones that have grown up from the matings he has planned for their owners. It is always so much fun to touch base. We horses….are like his dear friends!
Sarah will also be going to Saratoga to work for a few weeks. This is great news as Dottie has asked her to get some ‘fun photos’ from that venue for us to share with you in the diary. This will be so special to get an up to the minute report on the Saratoga happenings from these two people we know so well.
I’m off to stay cool under one of my favorite trees. Have a splendid weekend…enjoy the great racing…drink lots of water to stay hydrated….and most of all enjoy your time with your family and friends.
With love,
Hugs to all~ (especially my John’s mom, Mary Jane, who is truly not feeling well at this time)

To all the horses and riders this racing weekend. Good luck and a safe trip.
The Clement Hirsch isn’t the same without you Zenyatta, but there are some beautiful fillies running. I’m torn. Love them all. Just looking at them in the paddock is exciting. I wish they could all end in a dead heat. (silly I know). Lots of interest in the “match race”. I can only hope for a safe trip for all. I personally don’t like match races, but I can see it has generated lots of articles in our local papers, local news, etc so there should be a good-sized crowd. In that respect it is good for the sport. Prayers and healing wishes for Your John’s Mom to feel better soon.
I’m looking forward to my “Dumpling name tag” in the mail. Thanks again Diana.
I’m involved in rescue with cats and German Shepherd dogs and I can only say it is both heartbreaking/rewarding and we can do our best every day – the Zenyatta way. Hang in there to all of you who fight the good fight.

@Joan: You are amazing! Finally a cranky old broad with more road rash than me! I don’t have to tell you to keep rockin’ (as in rolling, not as in the chair!) My sword is exiting the scabbard and I am standing right beside you!
@All: When we get that parallel universe site set up, I’ll jump all my activism there, but in the mean time, this is really the only place we have to gather and inspire.

I would personally prefer that the subject of horse slaughter be taken to another site. I come to read about my Zenyatta as my inspiration.
That said, horse slaughter is a very hot topic. And… it isn’t just race horses. The ROOT cause has to be examined. Very pivotal point. Please let me know about another site on this. The subject on slaughter is extremely emotional but there are routes and ways to explore options to correct. Move this subject to another site please.

STAND BY, COLLEAGUES!!!! ALTERNATIVE UNIVERSE CURRENTLY BEING BUILT…SHOULD GET IT UP AND RUNNING OVER THE WEEKEND–LOOKING FOR THE RIGHT FORMAT FOR ENTRY…IT WILL BE A DOT COM
ZENYATTA: YOU ARE MY INSPIRATION!!!!!!!!!! YOUR NAME WILL IN NO WAY BE USED ON THE NEW WARRIOR SITE…but I hope we earn your blessing someday once I get it up and running.
You know, kids, I was the one who brought that story about Deputy to this diary…it took off from there, so I feel responsible for bringing sadness to this page, but at the same time, I feel proud standing by and watching all of you jump in and do incredible work. This is the least this born-in-NYC-never-had-a-horse woman can do for such a great cause…

Before I say good-night, I have to share this video regarding our WILD HORSES. On the topic of slaughter, they, too, would be slaughter. I love the fact Madeleine Pickens is so dedicated and tenacious to help our American horses (and burros):

@Barbara Grimaldi, there are a few sites where u can make a free website. I think Wix.com is one of them. NoDayOff is another good name. The RIP D.. B.. fb has got over 300 friends in 2 days! Lots of good info being posted there.
Safe racing to all horses this weekend, & don’t forget to look out for the big race in Brasil that our friend Faby mentioned above.

Sweet Dreams Dear Z.
To all the same :) I would just like to say that my first encounter with the “hot topic” was really when I found my little mare on Facebook. She is happy now and safe and I have seen great pictures of her with her new family looking very content and loved. Based on information that (Keith) the man who found and rescued her, there are places all over that need assistance. I will continue to dig into what I can do for the Big Cause..to stop those few, who have no business in the business or world of horses. I in no way think that they are the majority..but like all thing…when the bad surface, it often over shadows the good. (but only to get our attention, I believe). But on a happy note…especially to all my southern califonia friends..here is a place that is making a differnce in Norco. I feel better just talking to them, because I know I can help out a little. http://www.sctbrescue.org/howyoucanhelp.htm
Have a blessed and safe weekend everyone. Hope to make it over to Del Mar..once the groceries are bought, the house is clean and laundry done..LOL.
Maybe I’ll just stay up a few more hours and finsih some of it. Sweet Dreams All. And sorry if my post have been to heavy of late. I will keep it lighter, I love this site and it has brightened many a day. Thank You Zenny, Dottie and all of you.

Dear Kate Wheeler & All On This Ramp: Thank you for the momentum to becoming educated in the art of the possible: ‘Know your enemy,’ is vital in debate and negotiation. Sen. Mary Landrieu`s stance on the canny approach to dismantling the market for what killed No Day Off, and the others, is firm and steady ‘as a pump bolt,’ as Jessamyn West wrote of her Quaker heroine Eliza Birdwell, in ‘The Friendly Persuasion.’ Writing Sen. Leahy of Vermont is where I start — a good and decent man — then on and on. No need any longer to despair there is nothing to be done; so once that has been settled, there is nothing as powerful as an idea whose time has come, long overdue. ~ The key to overseas consumption of anybody`s horses, is reminding ourselves that already in the world how many people wear Levi`s . .. pack an iPod .. want a Chevy/Ford — you name it — American dream machine cranked; pluck a Kleenex in a pinch, when things fail; drink a Coke/Pepsi? .. . American horses . .. the world`s horses .. . the backbone definition of ‘power,’ RENDERED??!? The coin of the realm describing what does work that matters — destroyed!?. Destroying a creature of the wind and the soul, destroys us. Looking away when it gets too painful is understandable, because we can`t understand the mindlessness behind it — and don`t want to. But we can say, ‘This is wrong.’ Looking back to face what to do next, becomes possible because we refuse to let a ghastly practice be ‘the way it has always been.’ Slow and steady wins. Entering a seventh decade doing this; it doesn`t get easier, it gets inevitable. ~ Keeping in touch when I can, always in the fight. ~And ‘Happiness on Your B`day,’ Miss Dottie. .Love, Khc.

Good Morning Zenny and all Z Nation. So many posts since I went to bed and so many thoughts running through my head. I came to Zenny’s diary almost under protest because my grand daughter was always telling me about it, so I thought I would check it out and then I could lecture her on how much time she was wasting. I’m one of those cranky old broads who think people, particularly kids, spend too much time with electronic gadgets. Guess what – I got hooked, probably because I love horses. Like Joan, I have a daughter who will be 50 next year and I AM cranky at times but I loved the site for all the love, caring, jokes and positive energy so I am now addicted and don’t want to lose all the joy I get every time I come here. Please, let’s have a separate place to conduct our business and keep our Z site full of positive, happy posts.
Sorry for babbling on like this. Have a great weekend and safe trips to all.
Connie O.
Prayers for Johns’ mother.Thank you Zenny, for always thinking of others.Enjoy your time outside under the trees.

I neglected to mention that because of Zenny this fumbling dumpling now has a Facebook page which she has no idea how to navigate – much to the annoyance of her grand daughter who frequently has to assist. Maybe this old dog will learn a few new tricks.

Good morning Queen Z. Rise and shine!! Have a blue grass brunch. Relax under your favorite tree, and stay cool and hydrated for you and Baby Z. We do miss you on this Clement Hirsch race day. You made it an annual habit, stopping our heartbeats as you approached the wire, especially last year. Some of your old competitors will be there, Switch and St. Trinians, and of course your special Z sister from Barn 55, Zazu. It will be a treat. I hope they all come home safe and sound. But you must know, we will be missing you – so much.
@J Smith, Barbara Grimaldi, Joan, Diana
S and all: I think “No Day Off” would be a perfect name for the site and for our motto and our mission. Thanks for the suggestion J Smith.

Great idea!!!!

Your passion and interest in horses is
Admired.

@Kate Wheeler–thank you for the detailed info.
If and when we take the fight to another site, I hope it’s a website not connected to Facebook. Until then, I’ll comply and not bring it up again. Praying that what we’vve begun won’t get tossed by the wayside. That would be a real tragedy.
DebraZ
I hate to hear of the horse slaughters. But I don’t think that can be stopped unless BREEDERS are held to a higher standard of responsibility. 60 Minutes stated that there are over 30,000 foals ( I don’t know if that is just thoroughbreds or all types) born EVERY year. Horses can live 20-30 years. How can this tremendous number be taken care of? I only know about dog breeding and I worked hard to make sure they had good homes and told every owner that if they couldn’t take care of the puppy at any point in its life they should give it back to me to find the dog a good home. Out of those 30,000 how many are like Zenyatta with great people around her?

@Darlene
I think it is becoming quite clear visits to see Z will be part
Of her Charity work to raise money for her causes. The number
And times will be planned by LE and Z’s connections. Enjoying
This website is so very important to keep our knowledge of her
And everything she stands for and what she has given to us.

@Signofthetimes, I agree. I’m just happy this diary exists so we can visit with Zenny and co. on such a regular basis.

@ Mary Johnson, regarding Deputy Broad and all ZEN-NATION concerned with this issue:
As you all know, the two countries where American thoroughbreds as well as horses & ponies of ALL breeds are slaughtered are Mexico & Canada. In Canada, the Western province where horse slaughter is taking place is Alberta; in the East it is I am devastated to say, my home province of Quebec. Horses bought for slaughter from the States usually go to OLEX (Ontario Livestock Exchange) in Toronto from where they are purchased and shipped to one of 2 slaughter houses in Quebec. Due to the actions of the Canadian Horse Defence Coalition, of which I am a member, 1 slaughter house in each province has been shut down. It has taken 5 + years to get to this point. However, Canada has recently passed legislation banning any horse that has been given any kind of chemical from being slaughtered for human consumption. In other words, CHDC went after the laws in Canada that govern animals raised for human consumption. The problem in Canada is that horses & ponies fall off the radar because according to our laws, they are not consumption animals. So this victory was VERY important! However, I must add that there are private individuals even in the USA that are slaughtering horses & to get these people, we need some kind of “horse police” both here and in the USA.
Here is the web site of the CHDC. They would welcome questions and support. But please don’t send them angry letters — they are an INCREDIBLE group of people, drastically underfunded, who have made HUGE inroads toward resolving this horrible practice:

First, I so admire the spirit, passion and energy that so many of you bring to advocating for innocent animals. It’s a cause dear to my heart — I applaud your efforts and will be doing whatever I can to be supportive.
Next, my best wishes and thoughts to John’s mother.
Also, I’m always so happy to think of Zenyatta in happy retirement.
and last, my special thanks and appreciation for all of you who wished me well this past week. I am on a treatment plan and have a great doctor. Things could be a lot worse!!
