Hello Everyone,
From Del Mar to Saratoga…which opens today….HAPPY RACING!
This is truly the DAILY DOUBLE of summer racing in our sport. It kicks into full swing today! You have Saratoga which starts the day on the East Coast…and then Del Mar on the West Coast to round out your day of thoroughbred enjoyment! During the next several weeks, there are so many options, so many great horses, an abundance of stakes races and LOTS OF FUN!
Even though it is exceptionally warm on the East Coast today, in the mid-90’s and a heat index of 100, the NYRA stated that the race meet will open on schedule. There are 2 stakes races on their program, the Sanford for 2 year olds and the James Marvin Stakes for older horses. The latter drew a field of very accomplished stakes winners going 7 furlongs. Both races will be very competitive and fun races to watch.
Each coast offers deep racing fields over the entire weekend. Have a great time handicapping, watching the races, and analyzing all of your selections! Additionally, HOOVES CROSSED for great racing luck for all of YOU!
Again, please take special care of yourself in this heat. It is really important for you to monitor your physical activities and stay properly hydrated! I know something about this. MY JOHN always monitored my hydration levels when I was at Barn 55. Due to my size and weight…and then in consideration of my physical activities as an athlete, this was a very, very important part of my overall well-being. That is why I know the great importance of monitoring one’s HYDRATION LEVELS!
Happy Weekend to all of my dear, dear FRIENDS!
With Love,
Hugs to All~

Dear Kennedy’s in San Diego:
Thank you for the link on First Dude. Sad news. How lucky we are that our Z is and has been sound and healthy. A lot of thanks to Dear John, some to great conformation and some to good racing luck. Hugs, J.B.

@All: Well, I’m sure it’s just me, but if FD was mine, I’d give him the 8-month layoff and bring him back next year before retiring him to stud. His record then would be even more stirling than it is now. But bucks are bucks, I guess. Sigh.

Very sad news about First Dude. My husband is going to be crushed. He picked him to win the Derby. He watched and cheered him on with love and pride when he finally showed the world what my husband always believed he was made of. I am not looking forward to telling him when he comes rushing home with about 15 minutes to change clothes and get to his second job in which he will have worked 22 hours in one day….5 days a week…He does love Zenyatta, but I drug in kicking and screaming into the world of horse racing and First Dude was HIS pride and joy…
Footnote – my first born grandchild is named Boston after the great Stallion..
I spent my summers in Louisville with my Aunt and cousin…stalking Churchill Downs… the first 18 yrs of my life…I think I was born with The fever…
@DJ- You have the incredible way of posting just what I need as a prayer..I spent the weekend with NO air conditioner. It was so hot and miserable I forgot to be grateful for all his blessings….thank you!

@Kari Bussell–thanks for sharing. I guess we’re all lurking around, waiting for today’s entry. Can’t stay outside, though. Already 101 here, headed up to 105. We’ve kept our dogs in so much this summer that I feel like I’m living in a doghouse–lol!
So thankful for air conditioning!

Barbara W: Then that is what we will do :)

@Kari Bussell-We never forget the first horse we loved. In my case, it was determine. And then Swaps. Thanks for the info on southern expressions. My late sister-in-law was raised in memphis and went to high school with Elvis. She told me that he was sort of a redneck and din’t have that many friends. the first time anyone knew he could sing was when he entered a high school talent contest and won THIRD prize for singing one of my old favorites, Old Shep. Just wish I had picked her brain more when she was still alive. My nephews spent considerable time at Graceland.Elvis never forgot the people who were his friends when he had nothing. More country song titles–Her teeth were stained but her heart was pure; Get you tongue outta my mouth because I’m kissing you goodbye; If I can’t be number one in your life, then number two on you; You stuck my heart in an old tin can and shot it off a log; The next time you throw that fryin’ pan my face aint gonna be there; I hate every bone in your body except mine; I knew I’d hit rock bottom when I woke up on top of you; I wish I were in dixie tonight, but she’s out of town; They may put me in prison, but they can’t stop my face from breakin out; and lone especially for DJ-Hell stays open all night.

To Dottie O. Moore: So glad you ‘followed Terlingua.’ ~ Abigail Anderson`s ‘THE VAULT’ is what is always said about stars: it took a lifetime in the making for her to become an overnight success.

Just got in from misting horses – it’s become a daily routine – at least we’re only up to 93 today. Notice I said misting – even I have enough fear not to dump a bucket of ice water on one of my horses!!
@Gary Moulton – funny limerick – you’ve got talent.

Hello Zeny! Hope you did not feel too hot over the weekend. Weather forecast for the week is cooler temperatures. Go out and enjoy when it is safe to be outside. Hugs and prayers going your way. Marilu

Has anyone here read Temple Grandin’s book, Animals Make Us Human? I highly recommend it to anyone who loves animals as we do. When you read the section on horses, the It’s Tricky story becomes clearer.

HAD to work outside, so aimed mist-er high from cottonwood branch above fountain, [birds` & my direction], set timer & worked +- 90 minutes, in tattered, soaked garden hat & cotton threads; ‘Thank His *Goodness,’ [DJ`s *] no one but birds & one blase` cat to frighten. ~ Through in time for lunch!

@Jane C-Wonderful story about Zenyatta. @Sharon Call-Red belongs in any discussion of comedians. Pretty good artist, too. @Judy Berube-Benny was a master of timing and reaction. It took me a long time to get the joke about the wet coins but when I did, I never forgot it. He raised a lot of money for charity and at some of the venues he played his violin. He used to joke that they let the spectators in free but charged them to get out.

Do you think It’s Tricky was commenting on all the whacks she got when she was moving all-out as well as the cold water? Perfect response in either case.
Special Thanks for Bull Lea link–my mother’s favorite horse!
So sorry about so many horses getting hurt lately including First Dude.
Hope the girl with the dancing dapples is keeping cool along with all the Z Dumplings. Love and hugs to all, Suzanne G

Ken Burns` ‘PROHIBITION’ Preview http:wwf.wgbh.org/programs/PBS-Previews-Prohibition-1524/episodes/PROHIBITION-Preview-30453 .. . Coming in October!!
Sharon Call
@Judy Berube. Sharon’s link challenge for the day: film of It’s Tricky, preferably of her antics in her stall and dumping the jocky, but I’ll take anything I can get.
@Terry Crow. How about Alan King, Shelly Berman and the incomparable Victor Borge. Borge was a wonderful classical pianist and when asked why he didn’t persue that, he replied that he could make more money doing comedy coupled with piano. If you’ve ever heard his “reading” with punctuation marks then you know what I’m talking about. I saw him once in person when I was 18 at the Birmingham, AL auditorium and he had the audience rolling in the aisles. His humor never got old and just got better when he started having a soloist perform with him. It’s a wonder he didn’t break something he hit the floor so many times.
