Good Morning,
I love this photo! This is my dear friend, April Mayberry, who came to visit ME while
she was in town this week for the Fasig Tipton Yearling Sale.
As many of you may know, I spent my very early training days with April and her Mom,
Jeanne, at the Mayberry’s Training Center in Ocala, Florida. Once purchased at the
September Yearling Sale, and my skin disease was cleared up, I was then able to
travel. Dottie made my vanning arrangements and I was off to Ocala to start my early
lessons with April and Jeanne.
They have literally known ME from the very beginning stages of my career.
It was with them that I learned so many of ‘the basics’ about being a race horse
and the foundation for my early lessons about equipment, riders, galloping, jogging,
and breezing down the lane was established.
I stayed with them until the beginning of May of my two year old year…and then I
was off to Barn 55! It was absolutely FABULOUS to see April and spend some time
with her! I even got to show her MY BABY BUMP! So much has happened in the
last several years since I was a ‘darling little yearling’ living in Ocala!
SUCH WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL MEMORIES!
It has really been an eventful week. This is very special! A second party contacted
the Breeders’ Cup on Wednesday afternoon and asked if they could MATCH
the $11,200 donation to the V FOUNDATION for the Breeders’ Cup Experience and
VISIT WITH ME! They really wanted to participate in all of this!
The BC emailed Dottie and told her of this request. Needless to say, we agreed to help
and were more than willing to make this happen. Thus, it is now $22,400…that
will be contributed to the V FOUNDATION for this BC Package and VISIT WITH ME!
Then yesterday afternoon, I was able to TANGO on the phone with ANN and wish her
a VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY! She was very excited to hear from ME…and SEE ME!
During our visit, she added one request…she wanted ME to be sure and THANK ALL
OF YOU FOR THE WONDERFUL BIRTHDAY GREETINGS! She was truly touched by
ALL of your thoughtfulness!
It has really been a quite a busy and FUN week. I have so enjoyed touching base with
so many of my dear friends…and of course, MY TEAM….and ALL OF YOU!
HAPPY FRIDAY!
With Love,
Hugs to All~

@Barbara Wood-Sent you an e-mail, enjoy. @Kennedys in San Diego and Judy Berube-Did not realize the age of Life at Ten. All the more reason that she should be retired. As I recall, the owners of LAT have had no comment on the Breeder’s Cup fiasco. I do not know these people and I cannot try to gauge their motives, but contrast them with the Mosses.@Judy Berube-I did watch Sid Caesar and Imogene Coca. I was watching TV when all you saw was the Indian chief test pattern. I have been to a few horsey venues, but only because I have lived so long.@Trina Nagele-I would love to correspond with you and thank you for your interest. Karen Gogue has my email address and, if you wish to receive a copy of the joke I will gladly send it to you. You are a special person.

@Sarah Powell—Bless your heart for caring so beautifully for all the cats, especially the Penthouse Three. Great story!
@Debbie G—Blessings be upon your dear stepdad for that outstanding rescue work with feral cats! Thanks for sharing, and high hoof to him!
@Charlotte Farmer and Judy Berube—Great links and info!
@Kathy Kimber—Your dad was a very special guy. Thanks for sharing his story. I’m sure you have made him proud, too.

@Kathryn Cogswell— For the story of David, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLqT46e6rXk WAS right! And you’re right, it was worth it! A lesson for us all in fighting our personal demons.

Hi Amy K: I am definitely going to the Travers, but I may go up for the Alabama too. Yesterday’s race was so exciting. I was thinking if Zazu and Inglorious are added to this mix for the Alabama, wow what a race that will be. Let me know if you are planning to go to the Haskell at Monmouth Park on July 31. I would love to meet up with other Z Dumplings there too.

@The Kennedys in San Diego said: Lol. Those carrots will do it every time. I’ll have to have a look at your photos. So you don’t think Blind Luck will race in the Alabama?
Kate Wheeler
@JAG: Just read the post about the loss of your sister, Mary. Losing a sister is so hard, and for your mom, it is especially hard to lose a child, no matter the age. We all grieve with you and your mom, and all your family. But know for sure that you will pass through the pain you feel today and time will give you the gift of joyful and peaceful memories of Mary.

@Trina Nagele – Thanks for the kind words. I’ve always said that I like animals better than people. They never want anything from you except your love and attention (and food!). Their love is unconditional. I don’t trust anyone who is not an animal lover. That’s why I love this website so much. I know that everyone is like-minded. Hugs and a high hoof to you, Trina!

Dear Trina N.:
Glad you liked the links. Hugs, J.B.
Dear Terry C.:
Well, that makes two of us. Hugs, J.B.

What a wonderful race Blind Luck and Havre de Grace ran on Saturday! Did you know how Blind Luck got her name? It’s sort of interesting I think and very good! Her sire is Pollard’s Vision, a stallion who is blind in one eye…and named after Red Pollard, Seabiscuit’s rider. Her dam is Lucky One. Hence, Blind Luck! Perfect! She cost just $11,000 and now she’s earned over $3 million. Guess the rich folks don’t get to have ALL the good ones! She’s made 21 starts, with 12 wins, 7 seconds, and 2 thirds…never off the board. Whata mare!!
Gary Moulton
Could someone win the Travers and the Haskel this year? Romans might take a shot with “Shackleford”. If he could do it I think he would be the 3 yr old of the year.

Your are the loveliest of lovelies, my dearest Zenyatta. Love you always.

Dear Peggy One:
What a sweet story about Blind Luck. She certainly turned out to be a terrific horse. Hugs, J.B.
Dear Gary Moulton:
I think you are right. Probably whoever can win both of those races will have a shot at best three year old of the year. Shackleford could do it if he runs back to his efforts in the Triple Crown races. Hugs, J.B.

Dear Z,
Goodnight and Sweet Baby Dreams. Love you, Judy and Russ
Trina Nagele
@Peggy One—Thanks so much for the explanation of Blind Luck’s name! It makes me feel better about the name because I thought of it as sort of belittling along the order of “If she wins, it’s just by blind luck.” Maybe it’s also a little self-irony on the part of the owner, having paid so little for her and gotten so much?
DJ
To Kc: Thank you. Since I cannot fly across the heavens to hug you..I will instead share a prayer of gratitude; the only repayment for love is with love. No..I did not know. My mother’s favorite name was David and she wished to name her first born son David…hoping they would then have a whole ‘baseball team’. However, after five girls, myself the last…well..the Zenyatta tears that this wonderful Community have taught me are the 8th Wonder and a natural source of healing have been flowing, and my struggling intellect has not caught up with my emotions still. So I will say naught more, except that there is a much Higher Intellect at work within this special Community, humbly hidden as Dumplings.

The Pulley
When God at first made man,
Having a glass of blessings standing by,
Let us (said he) pour on him all we can:
Let the world’s riches, which dispersed lie,
Contrast into a span,
So strength first made a way;
Then beauty flow’d, then wisdom, honour, pleasure:
When almost all was out, God made a stay,
Perceiving that, alone of all his treasure,
Rest in the bottom lay.
For if I should (said he)
Bestow this jewel also on my creature,
He would adore my gifts instead of me,
And rest in Nature, not the God of Nature:
So both should losers be.
Yet let him keep the rest,
But keep them with repining restlessness,
Let him be rich and weary, that at least,
If goodness lead him not, yet weariness
May toss him to my breast.

@Terry Crow – The Derby is at 233 E Huntington Drive. I am not sure but I believe it is about seven blocks from Santa Anita. Don’t hold me to that distance. If you are in that area you should drop in at CTBA there on Colorado Blvd. and look at all the wonderful memorabilia that is on display. Vivian Montoya, the librarian is a dear friend and you will be amazed at what they have. In fact, I encourage all of you to drop in and look at a part of our California Thoroughbred Racing history.
On another subject, I love your jokes.

@To All – Here is the link to the article on Noor written by Paul Post of The Saratogian.

In the article Michael states that we have reached our goal.

Good morning. Did not the girls give us one of the best weekends in racing in a long time? Wow! What finishes! What determination! Blink Luck/Havre de Grace in the Delaware Handicap, the Cambina/Nereid dead-heat in the American Oaks and Irish Gypsy/Ultra Blend in the A Gleam Handicap. It doesn’t get much better. Happy Monday.
Especially Horses
Of course meant to write Blind Luck…

@Charlotte
You did it GF!! So proud of you – one of your own Z’sters, a Z dumpling groupie, Zenny! WOW! See what you do Zenny? The magic is still at work! Congrats Char! What a wonderful ending to the Noor saga….:)

@Linda in NJ — The Alabama Stakes is for 3 year-old fillies. Blind Luck won in 2010. She is pointed to the Personal Ensign next month.

@Judy Berube–Best Pal was a very honest horse, could always be counted on to run his race. Did campaign in California, but ran second in the Kentucky Derby, beaten less than two lengths. I think that when he retired he was the all-time winning money earner for Cal-breds.@Charlotte Farmer-I have been to The Derby several times after the races at Santa Anita. Just not lately. IT was/is a great place, but the Woolf memorabilia being mising would definitely detract. I was aware of the CTBA and Ms. Montoya. Have emailed her on occasion for information and racing records and she always gets back to me promptly. An amazing resource.@Kathy Kimber and Trina Nagele-Sorry I got distracted last night and did not respond to your requests in a prompt manner. I am now going to send the requested material. As Art Baker used to say, You Asked For It.

Today’s Joke–What happens to a black horse which jumps into the Red Sea? It gets wet.
Peggy One
@Trina…it’s always “blind luck” as to whether a horse is going to be fair, good, a winner, a stakes winner….or in Blind Luck’s case, a Champion! :) In any event, she was named a long time before she became any of those things…..!! :) I just loved the way they arrived at her name, too.

Good morning all.
CONGRATS to “our Charlotte” — a fellow Z-ster and “dumpling” on the great news about reaching her fund-raising goal. I am so thrilled for you Miz Charlotte!!!
TO ALL: Yes! An absolutely spectacular weekend of racing. I had only ever witnessed one dead-heat in real time — one of the Breeders Cup races, some years ago now. It was 2004 and High Chaparral and Johar finished together in the BC Turf. Anyone remember that? But the Nereid-Cambina dead=heat was just as exciting. Wow, John! Two in the first three! You must be very pleased with “your girls.” Blind Luck-Havre de Grace race was also great sports entertainment. Yup — the girls did themselves proud this weekend!!!!
