Good Morning,
I love this photo! This is my dear friend, April Mayberry, who came to visit ME while
she was in town this week for the Fasig Tipton Yearling Sale.
As many of you may know, I spent my very early training days with April and her Mom,
Jeanne, at the Mayberry’s Training Center in Ocala, Florida. Once purchased at the
September Yearling Sale, and my skin disease was cleared up, I was then able to
travel. Dottie made my vanning arrangements and I was off to Ocala to start my early
lessons with April and Jeanne.
They have literally known ME from the very beginning stages of my career.
It was with them that I learned so many of ‘the basics’ about being a race horse
and the foundation for my early lessons about equipment, riders, galloping, jogging,
and breezing down the lane was established.
I stayed with them until the beginning of May of my two year old year…and then I
was off to Barn 55! It was absolutely FABULOUS to see April and spend some time
with her! I even got to show her MY BABY BUMP! So much has happened in the
last several years since I was a ‘darling little yearling’ living in Ocala!
SUCH WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL MEMORIES!
It has really been an eventful week. This is very special! A second party contacted
the Breeders’ Cup on Wednesday afternoon and asked if they could MATCH
the $11,200 donation to the V FOUNDATION for the Breeders’ Cup Experience and
VISIT WITH ME! They really wanted to participate in all of this!
The BC emailed Dottie and told her of this request. Needless to say, we agreed to help
and were more than willing to make this happen. Thus, it is now $22,400…that
will be contributed to the V FOUNDATION for this BC Package and VISIT WITH ME!
Then yesterday afternoon, I was able to TANGO on the phone with ANN and wish her
a VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY! She was very excited to hear from ME…and SEE ME!
During our visit, she added one request…she wanted ME to be sure and THANK ALL
OF YOU FOR THE WONDERFUL BIRTHDAY GREETINGS! She was truly touched by
ALL of your thoughtfulness!
It has really been a quite a busy and FUN week. I have so enjoyed touching base with
so many of my dear friends…and of course, MY TEAM….and ALL OF YOU!
HAPPY FRIDAY!
With Love,
Hugs to All~

@Charlotte Farmer and Judy Berube-I have been in The Derby several times but not for awhile. It is near Santa Anita. Did not realize that some of the Woolf memorabilia had been sold. It certainly detracts from the ambience. @DJ-I have reconsidered. If anyone wants me to email the joke to them, I will. Just post your request and e-mail address. However, it is definitely due to a diminshing number of requests.

Amy K: Right as rain; “If the horse doesn`t want to run, there`s a reason.” Your point about position of the runner on the track is especially compelling. Learned something new w/ that point, so thank you.

Hi Zenny, Super that the donation was matched !!! Love the picture of you and April– it looks like “Forever Friends”. I also enjoyed the watching the Happy Birthday video with the foals–too cute. Everyone have a great week and to those who are going thru difficult times– take a deep breath and reach out to family and friends. Peace!!!!!!!!

WAR HORSES: Back in the 90’s Don Johnson made a made for TV movie called “In Pursuit of Hornor” it was about three soldiers right after WW1 they were in the calvary. Very good film. Based on true incidents. One inciden the bonus marchers being fired on in Washington DC. and 2nd the military ordered the slaughter of war horses stateside. This is about a rescue these men did. I know horses state side were slaughtered it happened in the little Kansas town I was born and raised in. Farmers came to buy the horses but the army wouldn’t sell they had their orders. Anyway the film in enjoyable and you might find it on e-bay or at blockbuster.

Life at Ten is now 6 years old. Her owners had planned to retire her after the 2010 Breeders’ Cup and had her listed for sale at the breeding stock sale at Keeneland. They withdrew her from the sale after her performance –assuming her value had dropped. I think that is why they decided to race her this year. I agree that she does not want to race anymore.

Dear Kathy Kimber:
Will try to find that DVD. My husband father was in the Cavalry in World War I. He was very good with horses, as he grew up with them. He saw battle on horseback and was wounded and affected by chemical gases used by the Germans. He never talked about his time in the War. Hugs, J.B.

Dear Terry Crow:
Must be really wonderful to have so many memories from all the places you have seen relating to horses and racing. Go ahead and tell the joke. Sure it won’t be a problem for the Z Family. Hugs, J.B.

@Kathryn Cogsdell–thank s so much for the kind words.
@Charlotte Farmer– fascinating about the PharLap/Woolf/Hillenbrand connection.
@Terry Crow–ok, e-mail me the joke–I’m moo@grandecom.net (don’t laugh). No, I don’t own cows.
@Kari Bussell–where are you?
We miss you.
Anyone heard from Catherine Uher?

Dear Kennedy’s in San Diego:
Hope they do retire her. Did you get a chance to look at the link on Best Pal? He sure was a California Boy. Although he ran a few races out of Cali, most of his career was at California tracks. Hugs, J.B.

Dear DJ:
Boy we Dumplings sure have a lot in common. Hugs, J.B.
Dear Terry Crow:
Did you watch the Show of Shows with Sid Ceasar? Hugs, J.B.

@ Debbie G—What a wonderful letter carrier you are to help out the feral and abandoned cats and dogs along your route! Bless you, and high hoof!
@Terry Crow—Thanks for two good jokes today, and I’m looking forward to Monday’s joke. Remember, you can always put a warning in front if you feel it might offend someone (I know you’re not going to post X rated ones!)
Trina Nagele
@Shari Voltz–Bon voyage tomorow!

@Judy Berube: My dad also was gassed in the war in France, he was a blacksmith so he worked with the horses. There were times they had no food and had to slaughter a horse. He would never eat horse meat said he couldn’t stand to do that he’d rather starve. When he came home I guess he was very, very thin. Undortunately the horses were considered expendable a bit like Sgt Reckless was in the Korean War.
Kathryn Cogswell
barbara: The principles you mention apply to all situations where horses — or other living things — are threatened. I missed that point and am glad you didn`t. J Smith`s many suggestions [above] make it possible to do something, as she says. Doing something, no matter how small it may seem, drifts along adding to ‘The Great Conversation’ we are fortunate to join in this land.

Dear DJ:
Underdog. Too funny. Hugs, J.B.

Dear Kathy Kimber:
Same was happening with war dogs. Only now the military is starting to look for homes for them stateside. It’s as someone mentioned earlier, the animals have no choice. They’re at the mercy of the humans in charge. Hugs, J.B.

@luvscritters–—No wonder you use that name!—You certainly do match action to word. Thanks for sharing. Bless you and high hoof!
@Linda E Ohio—Thanks for sharing about your rescue dog Buddy. What kind is he? Hugs to both of you.
