HAPPY 4th OF JULY!
I want to wish all of you a fantastic HOLIDAY WEEKEND and a very safe July 4th.
While many people will be off to the races, walking on the sand, and enjoying great barbeques, I’ll be here at Lane’s End having a special time as well. MY JOHN and his crew will be racing.
I’m looking forward to enjoying the sunshine, grazing on the bluegrass, and eating some of my favorite TREATS! As you can see, I’m happily awaiting a few bites from my ST. LEO’S friends in this photo. This is a visit I did to help fund-raise for a local school. I must say, the ladies were so gracious and brought ME the perfect treats!
The holiday weekend is also filled with a large number of fabulous stakes races. One in particular is of great interest to ME. On Monday, my dear, dear friend, HARMONIOUS, is running in the ROYAL HEROINE G-2 at Hollywood Park. It is one mile on the turf. This will be her first start since February when she tried the dirt at Santa Anita. Harmonious has a wonderful past performance record. She is a very accomplished turf filly by Dynaformer out of a mare named Jade Tree! I’m wishing her ALL THE BEST!
Harmonious and I spent a great deal of time together at Barn 55. We not only grazed together each morning and afternoon, but we shared MARIO as our groom. He is truly one terrific guy! As we would often be outside at the exact same time, Mario would be with ME and Frank would be with Harmonious. It worked out perfectly for everyone.
I believe this is one of the reasons why it was such a smooth transition for ME to share a paddock with other horses once I acclimated to life at Lane’s End. It was such a familiar and comfortable situation as I have literally spent years outside grazing at Barn 55 with other horses close by: Tiago, Life Is Sweet, Zardana, After Market and Harmonious to name a few. We always respected each other’s space, which is so important, and simply enjoyed sharing our time outdoors with each other. We could literally stand there and look around for hours and hours. We weren’t necessarily ‘eating anything’…we were just enjoying the time outdoors! Hmmmm, I still do that!
I’d personally like to wish HARMONIOUS and VALERIA (one of my Moss pals) GOOD LUCK in their races. They are both running on Monday, the 4th! Such FUN!
Enjoy your Holiday!
Please be safe!
With love,
Hugs to All~

Dear Laura J.:
I can imagine how disappointing it must have been for you to lose Step. But your continued concern and willingness to help him if he needs you shows what a special person you are. Hope he continues to improve. Hugs, J.B.

Patricia: His handler merely held on so the horse didn’t go over backward in the gate for Heaven’s sake. He’d already “put the square peg in the round hole” as someone said before. The horse reacted to other commotion in the gate, as many young horses and first time starters do, certainly not to anything his handler said! The starter got involved after the horse had broken through the gate and pulled away from the header (who had collapsed on the ground under the gate, after being kicked/hit in the knee by the horse). The horse had to be controlled and the starter was there to do it. As far as the mention of Quality Road, if you remember, he came very close to getting away with a blindfold on and ended up being scratched out of maybe the most important race of his life. Have a wonderful week and I hope you celebrated America’s birthday in a grand way! Hugs to all…..

Dear Z`s: Boston after the Red Sox won the pennant and with a friend walking the Commons early saw the pair of mounted police unloading their guys for the day`s rounds. They were so good to let us fawn over these two gentlemen mounts & one of the policemen told that ‘George,’ here was in the heat of the parade right after the win. “He`s bomb-proof,” his proud rider said, and told us they are partners for their careers. You could see the pride and love between these two pairs. It seems George really WAS at least ‘sparkler-proof,’ since some kid tied one lit into his tail . .. George just halted, looked around at it and waited for his guy to dismount & cut the thing off him. That day, we left with a vision of what is possible, and — as the man said, “That made me want to be a better person with these great beasts, no matter what the job.”

Just got caught up on all the posts and links from yesterday- thank you to everyone! Renny and the bucket was too funny!
@Judy B: Thank you <3
@Marshall (girl's name): Thank you-I will post some updates later on Z's new post.<3
@Kathryn Cogswell: Beautiful words re: Noor
@Charlotte Farmer: That inscription for Noor is breathtaking! I'm so glad that it looks like a plan is in place to obtain dirt from GGF. Any update on the fund-raising? I sent a little yesterday via Paypal. Loved the Steve Haskin article. Loved the Bamboo tidbit!
@Alex Bowdoin and Laura J: We went to the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta to see a dressage event and it was…well, our mouths were hanging open! Knowing how challenging ONE lead change can be, to see a lead change with every stride was amazing!
@Laura J: See above if you didn't already. Glad Step is better and it does speak to your character and heart that you are following his progress and situation.
@Everyone: Mike Smith posted the most beautiful photo of Eblouissante on his FB page a few (?) days ago- check it out!
@ EVERYONE: As always, I am blown away by the caring, informative, funny posts and wish I had Judy Berube's (and others) of briefly and warmly responding to so many- but I read and love everything and send warm wishes to all<3

PS: DJ: If you get the chance, listen to Josh Groban`s composition ‘The War AT Home.’ He presented it last night at ‘A Capitol Fourth,’ for PBS & dedicated it to the fight returning vets still wage after their return.

Zenyatta, I hope you are having a great 4th of July wekend and I wish luck to your barn 55 buddies who are racing. It sounds like you are having lots of fun at Lane’s End Farm playing with your buddies and grazing, even on the 4th of July. It sounds like they really miss you out in California. That includes your old groom Mario. I’m happy that one of your buddies from out west gave you a little shout out.
