Happy Saturday!
This photo is absolutely TOO CUTE! A few days ago, a dear fan of mine, Judy Gadwell, and several of her friends went to BARN 55 to visit MY STALL and see my dear little sister, Eblouissante. Well, while Judy was greeting “E”, she began sniffing Judy’s purse. Lo and behold, Judy started to laugh telling Steve that she had caramel corn in her bag.
The sense of smell must be something that is very well developed in our family. Last year, when I hosted a brunch for charity (The Los Angeles Zoo), I did the same thing. My one guest, Karen, set her purse down on a chair at the end of the table. While I was out grazing and enjoying myself hosting the visit, something kept drawing ME to Karen’s purse.
I walked right over to the table and immediately started to sniff Karen’s bag…just like “E” did with Judy. Suddenly everyone started to laugh and Karen commented…”Oh, I forgot….I brought some baby carrots for Zenyatta and they are in my purse.”
Karen immediately took the carrots out of her bag…..put some on the end of the table…and I began to snack on them. It truly was BRUNCH WITH ZENYATTA!
I find this so interesting. I guess many different types of characteristics can be shared in a family. “E” and I not only have a well-developed sense of smell…but we both have a great sense of taste (loving our treats and food), hearing (wear cotton in our ears), touch (love to be pet and hugged), sight (see everything all of the time).
This family thing is very interesting to ME!
Have a great weekend! Enjoy all of the wonderful stakes races around the country and LET THE SUMMER BEGIN!
With Love,
Hugs to ALL~ (Good luck to my pals Cloud Man, Zazu, and Cozi HRosie)

Help please somebody. Managed to miss info on Cozi Rosie on her race tomorrow and will not have time to sit and watch TVG all day. Any details on where and when that you might share?
Thanks.

Too funny but so true. People are amazed that my fillies and mares come when they’re called or even when they see me, but I’ve got the goods (carrots) and they know it. That phrase about “eating like a horse” … you girls just love those goodies.
Good job, Zazu! Got to love Tapit.
Jeanie
You are just TOO CUTE for words!

I love the pictures! Thanks for sharing them. It’s nice to know that your sister have very much the same personality as you. I can’t hardly wait to see her first race. Have a nice weekend and enjoy being outside. I love you!!!

@Chynthia H – As always, your story was beautiful. I love your writing so much. How wonderful that you were able to visit the legendary Calumet. Sounds like Sweet Tooth was living up to her name. She knew there was a treat somewhere. I enjoy the history of racing a great deal and the horses whose names ring down through the years. I’m always looking for new books to read. So many amazing champions and inspirational stories. I was in highschool during the 70’s and my love for racing was born in those Triple Crown winners. I thought Alydar was very special. No matter what, he never gave up. The rivalry between he and Affirmed was remarkable. I called Calumet a couple of weeks ago to see if I could visit the graveyard, but unfortunately the answer was no. So many champions of the past lay in that hallowed ground, I wish the owners could see how much it means to many of us to be able to honor them in their resting place, much as our Charlotte wishes for Noor. I am going to visit Eskendereya, however, while I am in Kentucky. He reminds me so much of Alydar. Of course Alydar was the sire of Altair, who was the dam of Aldebaran Light, the dam of Alydar. I am also going on a tour of the Meadow in Virginia, Secretariat’s birthplace. They are having the tours about every three months and Leeanne Ladin, who was the co-author of Secretariat’s Meadow is the guide. Then it is on to the Horseracing Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs. I can’t wait, I am so looking forward to it all.
@Charlotte Farmer – Thank you so much for the pictures and video of Noor. He was absolutely beautiful. I watched those images of Hollywood Park and was sad to think that it’s end may be near. When I was visiting Barn 55 I went over to the track afterward. There was the Swaps memorial and the Hollywood Gold Cup wall. I stood looking up at the beautiful curves in the grandstand, symbolic of the time when it was built. I could just see ladies with their hats and gloves and gentlemen in suites, a contingent of Hollywood’s stars were also in the mix all filling the seats for an exciting day at the track. It was the place to see and be seen. And the champion horses, one after another creating their legend. If only it could remain. Your in the stretch run with Noor, soon he will be in the winners circle, where he belongs.
@Ann and Jerry Moss – So happy that Zazu won her race today. She showed amazing heart coming down the lane. I miss seeing you both very much. With Zenyatta, you were such a big part of our lives. Thank you for supporting this diary and keeping us in touch with our beautiful Zenny. Although I have never seen her in person, I participate in this diary, look at my amazing #19 and visit Barn 55 and the joy she brings me just continues to grow. She will forever hold a very special place in my heart. Thank you again.
Sleep tight and sweet dreams, Zenny. Hugs and kisses. XXXOOO

Zenny those pictures of you girls are just beautiful. I am so glad that you didn’t suffer any bad weather there the other night and I am so glad that no horse or human was hurt at Churchill. You have to tell them to do another video of you sometimes soon, I know I have missed your video’s.
@Everyone someone mentioned that we should all meet at the Kentucky Derby one year. I think that would be a lot of fun. Do you think we could pull it off?
@Ensign if your out there, if you know Do you know at the major horse sales when they say the first day “Selected Sale of Yearlings” and the next day or two they say “Open Sale of Yearlings” I know what selected means, but what exactly does it imply here. Could you or anyone elaborate on that.
@ Zenny hope you have a wonderful evening. Wishing you seeet dreams and love you very much. Peggy
Peggy (N)
@Dawn your trip sounds like great fun, I hope you have a wonderful time. I heard you say earlier you were going to Lane’s End please give A P Indy my love, he is just wonderful and I pray so hard that he is with us for many years to come. I hope to get back there as well. I hope that Danielle (Hunter) will do your tour. She is a great guide. Better go for now. Love Ya Zenny

Brava, Zazu! Congratulations to the Mosses and Dottie, Racing Manager, for Zazu’s courageous win. Very exciting. She is well positioned for 3 year old champion filly.
Charlotte Farmer
@Terry Crow – Loved the Beckham joke. I wasn’t expecting the punch line.
@The Mosses – Congratulations on Zazu’s win.
@Vicky – In yesterday’s Post #281, you said that you hated this website because it always makes you cry. I feel sad that you are having that experience. Be of good cheer for there are so many positive posting to this site, not just sad things. Hold this in your heart, that every living thing on this earth has an angel in charge of it per Saint Augustine. They are never alone. Smiles to you!
@Calumet – I don’t know why but Calumet, at times, has quite an attitude. Like Dawn said about the 50’s and 60’s, Calumet was a powerhouse. Too bad Warren Wright isn’t alive he would have loved to have had people visit. The people that run Calumet now need to get over themselves, but that probably won’t happen.
@California Thoroughbred Museum (CTBA) – If anyone is visiting the Arcadia area you should really visit the Carlton F. Burke Library which is housed there at CTBA. It is awesome. They have really old silks on display, even Bing Crosby and Lin Howard’s silks from when the two were in partnership as Binglin. Also on display are trophies along with tons of reference materials for those who do research. It is right across from Santa Anita on Colorado Blvd.
@Zenyatta’s Followers – God, I envy all of you getting to go to the tracks and sharing, with others, the joy you have while there.
@Trina Nagele – No, I missed your posting about laminitis. I will check it out. Thanks!
@Noor – I am so glad all of you enjoyed the link to The Union about Noor. At least you got to see him run and the nice pictures that they printed. The sad thing about it is that for two years I tried to get them to do an article on Noor and Loma Rica and it fell on deft ears. Only one letter, from Gae, made it into the paper. It took Bill Dwyre’s column for them to jump on the bandwagon and finally do something. In the end I am glad the boy finally got the press he deserved.
@Thoroughbred Sense of Smell – Long ago I had to take care of my friend’s horse for a few days while she visited her daughter. Runzer, as I called her, is a thoroughbred and tall. I thought about getting some nice pictures for my friend while she was away and so I put a few pieces of carrots in my hand and went out the back door. I swear to God, my hand was closed and there was no way Runzer could have seen what I had, but she bellied up to the edge of the fence waiting for me. Forget the pictures she was too busy wanting what I had. And while cleaning out her pen she had this wonderful habit of coming up behind me and rubbing her nose on my back and then putting her chin on the top of my head. It was priceless.
Trina Nagele
Dearest Zenny,
Thanks for sharing these photos of your very own Dumplings visiting Barn 55! Too cute! Good night for now and sleep tight.
@JLG in CA—Cozi Rosie will be running Sunday in race 8 at Hollywood Park, estimated post time 4:44PDT. http://www.hollywoodpark.com/racing-todays-racecard. Her race is the $100,000 Beverly Hills Handicap, a Grade III at 1 ¼ miles on turf. Go Rosie!
@Terry Crow—Some more good ones! Thanks!
@Diana S—Great post! Love the humor!
@Cynthia H—Wow, what a wonderful story of your encounter with Sweet Tooth at Calumet Farm.
@Sue Fredrick—What a great idea of a buck (or more) for a Zenny kiss, for a future date!
@ Alexandra Bowdoin—Those life size horse sculptures are marvelous—thanks so much for the link on #280.
@Sherry Drish—Cute story of the blacksmith with the tobacco in his back pocket.
@Abigail in Montreal—Great info on Golden Fleece, and I’ll be reading your new Vault entry as soon as I can.
@Sharon in Seattle–Congratulations on your approaching retirement. Do you have special plans for the next stage?
@Amanda Gilliland—That is heart-breaking AND INFURIATING news about how the radiologist and the doctor failed to report the cancer that was visible and MARKED on your sister-in-law’s x-rays three years ago. I am not normally a litigious person, but these professionals should in my opinion be sued for malpractice. Kate and the whole family are suffering the consequences of that medical negligence, and to help prevent it from happening to others, those responsible must be held to account. My prayers and best wishes to you, Kate, your brother and niece.
Congratulations are in order to the following at HP on Sat:
—To Storm Cloud, the Mosses, Dottie, John Shirreffs, and Joseph Talamo on a gallant, hard-fought photo-finish second place.
—To Zazu, the Mosses, Dottie, John Sadler and Joel Rosario on the brilliant win. Zazu came through on the rail so tight that she bumped it with her hindquarters and had to recover her stride to go on for the win—a courageous move for filly and jockey.
—-To Chantal Sutherland for her win on Tribal Desert in the ninth.

My Sweet Lady Zenyatta, I always enjoy seeing the lucky people that get to visit your home @ Barn 55. What a great experience. To meet “E” had to be exciting too. I can’t wait to follow her career. That is really someting about the keen smell that you & “E” have. Thank Dottie for keeping your Post going. It is such a Blessing two-fold for keeping up with you & the joy it enriches my life with. I love you so much, Zenyatta for so many reasons. Sending Hugs & Kisses From Alabama With Love, Amanda G.
@Kim S.,Sarah Powell, Dawn Conrad, Sharon Call, Trina Nagele~ I appreciate you thoughts, comcerns & prayers. I’ll relay them to Kathy. I can’t wrap my mind around this since I’m an R.N. Only one word abnormal left out of a report made it life changing.

@Judy MG and Jane Wade
What a great photo of you all! And WOW on that beautiful poster, first time I’ve seen it that close. Didn’t I tell you about that stall? YOU ARE IN THERE! YOU ARE IN THERE WITH HISTORY! Zenyatta’s presense will always be there – it’ll never leave, never. So much love is still there in everyones heart for her, how could she not still be there. From the loving care that Mario still gives to her former home, to all the posters and photos of love, and to the lonely bag of carrots just inside the stall door that Mario places there for her every day with such love and care – it breaks ones heart knowing that she’ll not eat those carrots placed there by her loving friend. But I know there is happiness there now too – Zenny is in a place where she is happy and enjoying just being a horse – free and loving it. I know that does take some of the hurt away from Barn 55 – giving her up to LE now does bring more smiles to them knowing that. She’s well taken care of and loved there as well, and on her way to becoming a great Momma!
Thank you John and Hollywood Park for having Zenny remembered this way – how fitting for our Queen.
Brenda
Three cheers for Zazu, Team Zazu must be delighted. Chantal Sutherland has a mount today in the Queen’s Plate so I hope she’s not too tired after flying into Toronto from her win in CA yesterday. She’s not on my pick but I’ll be putting a small wager on her anyhow. Have a happy Sunday Zenny.
Linda in NJ
Hi Zenny: Oh, I am so disappointed. I thought your Z Fans said that Cozie Rosie was racing today, Sunday. I am so very sorry I missed that race. I was going to watch it on HRTV.
@Abigail in Montreal: I read your post yesterday and was really looking forward to the race.
@signofthetimes: Thanks for posting the link.
@JLG in CA: I think I am confused. Is Cozie Rosie running today, Sunday?
Linda in NJ
@Karen Gogue,Judy MG and Jane Wade: I am planning a trip to CA, not exactly sure just when. It might not be until the 1st week of August. I am just curious, did you folks call John to ask if you could come and visit?
Linda in NJ
Oh, I’ve got it. It was Zazu that ran yesterday.
DJ
To Linda in NJ:
Cozi Rosie is racing today (Sunday) at Hollywood Park! You have not missed her. She is running in the 8th Race #4 with Rosario aboard. Good Luck Linda and Rosie!

Yes, you got it…and Zazu was simply AMAZING! Not even in full gear when she passed Plum Pretty with ease :)

Dearest Sweet “Z”,
How could I forget to say ‘Good morning’ to you and your little one! I will check back later for a new hello from you.

Thanks, Trina! no special, specific plan right now, but I dream of visiting some of horse racing’s big stars – Funny Cide, AP Indy, to name just a few. Also trips back to Ridgewood Ranch in CA and Santa Anita which I love!

Good morning Zenyatta sweet one. I watched the video of Zazu winning. She is AWESOME. I think Mr. and Mrs. Moss have another great horse. She was wonderful. What an exciting race. I mean no one will ever be as good as you but I think I am just prejudice because I love you so much. I hope you have a good day without to much rain. My husband and I are celebrating our 21 wedding anniversary by going to Oglebay Park. We love to be outside. We will go to their little zoo and pet the animals. Do some nature walking and just enjoy some outside time. We are not dress up go to a fancy restaurant kind of people. I would rather be outside in nature. I think since my husband and I both have jobs that keep us inside most of the year we love to be outside when we can. I hope you and the girls enjoy your Sunday. I love you and send many Hugs and Kisses. Love, Shari XXXOOO

Have a great weekend beautiful girl and congratulations to Zazu for great race yesterday
