Happy Saturday!
This photo is absolutely TOO CUTE! A few days ago, a dear fan of mine, Judy Gadwell, and several of her friends went to BARN 55 to visit MY STALL and see my dear little sister, Eblouissante. Well, while Judy was greeting “E”, she began sniffing Judy’s purse. Lo and behold, Judy started to laugh telling Steve that she had caramel corn in her bag.
The sense of smell must be something that is very well developed in our family. Last year, when I hosted a brunch for charity (The Los Angeles Zoo), I did the same thing. My one guest, Karen, set her purse down on a chair at the end of the table. While I was out grazing and enjoying myself hosting the visit, something kept drawing ME to Karen’s purse.
I walked right over to the table and immediately started to sniff Karen’s bag…just like “E” did with Judy. Suddenly everyone started to laugh and Karen commented…”Oh, I forgot….I brought some baby carrots for Zenyatta and they are in my purse.”
Karen immediately took the carrots out of her bag…..put some on the end of the table…and I began to snack on them. It truly was BRUNCH WITH ZENYATTA!
I find this so interesting. I guess many different types of characteristics can be shared in a family. “E” and I not only have a well-developed sense of smell…but we both have a great sense of taste (loving our treats and food), hearing (wear cotton in our ears), touch (love to be pet and hugged), sight (see everything all of the time).
This family thing is very interesting to ME!
Have a great weekend! Enjoy all of the wonderful stakes races around the country and LET THE SUMMER BEGIN!
With Love,
Hugs to ALL~ (Good luck to my pals Cloud Man, Zazu, and Cozi HRosie)

Dear Judy (Mass) Gadwood:
Thanks for identifying everyone in the photo. Madison is a doll. I saw that photo of her and Z; very precious. Hugs, J.B.

We had so much fun that day! We took the picture of Zenyatta and Madison that Barbara Livingston took, framed it and it is hanging in your stall now too Zenyatta! Wish I knew how to email it to you so you could see it!
Have a great day! :-)

Zenyatta you are so adorable, and your sister she is so cute, I also hope that one day I can go to see you. Love you Ingrid.

Hi, beautiful Zenny!
I about fell over when Nancy Emailed me awhile ago to alert me that our small group that visited your little sister Ebby had made today’s Diary! And I was absolutely THRILLED to see all of those photos from our VERY special day!!
Thank you Dottie, John Shirreffs, Steve Willard, and everyone else at Barn 55 who made it all possible for us! And SO many thanks to Judy – who we’re all so indebted to for making it happen!
Zenny, just when I think I’ve run out of superlatives for your connections, they do something like this! What a magnificent family you have! Lucky, lucky girl! Before we were lead to Ebby’s stall, Steve asked us if we wanted to see “The Shrine,” meaning your old stall. I was speechless – seeing the walls adorned with photos & drawings of you! What a wonderful tribute to you, and their love for you. We actually got to go inside, and I admit I really felt like I was treading on hallowed ground – your presence is SO much felt there!
And Ebby! Sweet, sweet Ebby! She’s nothing short of adorable – SO much like YOU, Zenyatta! And Dottie is SO right about your mutual sense of smell! As in what happened with Judy, She instantly knew that I had mints with me – somewhere – WAY down at the bottom of my purse – and wrapped in 3 layers of plastic, too! But the funniest part for me was when she started to nuzzle my neck, and Steve asked me, “Are you wearing perfume?” Well I WAS – it was (“Raspberry Fantasy” Ha Ha!) the same cologne I was wearing when YOU did the same thing on one of my/our visits to you before you left for Lane’s End!
I didn’t mean to go on this long, but I just can’t say enough for your people, Zenny! Everyone loves YOU so much, but no wonder everyone loves THEM, as well!

Hi our big beautiful Z. The first thing I do when I turn on my computer is go right to Zenyatta.com. You really got me hook line and sinker!!!! Dottie your wonderful,

Hey Zenyatta, hope you are having as great a day in KY as we are here in Central OH. Low temps, low humidity, perfect summer weather, great for being at the track and enjoying the races.
I think horses can smell treats from miles away. My horses, Moses, knows when I have left them in the truck, and will winny until I get them for him and all of his barn mates.
@Abigail in Montreal, from yesteday, thanks for the info on Cozi Rosie, and Golden Fleece. I had heard the name but was not familiar with the story.
@Judy Berube, I too keep track of horses named Rose or Rosie because that was my mom’s name and sadly, my mom passed away just last week, on June 13 at the age of 89. Affectionately my dad use to call her “Nosy Rosie” and I have wondered if there was ever a horse by that name. Will be rooting for Cozi on Sunday in honor of my mom.
@Terry Crow and All, love the equine sense of humor, hope I can remember the jokes to tell my friends- horse, who lives next door, “neigh”bor, and why the long face ?

Dear Z Fans:
Cloud Man ran a valiant race in the 7th at HP. Lost by a barb of a head. Very good effort. Hugs, J.B.

Dear Librarian:
So sorry you just lost your Mom. My sister and I sadly lost our Mom at age 61 in l981. Doesn’t matter when you lose them; just as painful. Keep all the good memories. Will be rooting for Rosie too. Hugs, J.B.

@ Judy Gadwell What a wonderful time you had and we all get to share it. Thanks Dottie.
@ Sharon in Seattle Enjoy your retirement and hooves are crossed for you to get to the Horse Park to see Funny Cide. He was very friendly to Victoria when we saw him.
@ Abigail in Montreal Your response to me on The Vault was much appreciated and I’m now looking at my betting selections with much improved knowledge – I hope!!

I check the Jockey Club Horse Name Registry and found Nosey Rosey born in 2002. The last time she is listed as having raced is in 2007. Hugs, J.B.

Sweet Z, how cute & funny! Just one more reason to love you!! “How do I love you, let me count the ways”. Many!! Too many!
It is the strangest thing that the first thing I did after unpacking from my husbands bucket list of fishing at the Sioux Narrows of Canada for a week, was to come to read your post and be with you. He was willing to travel with me to Oakland 2010 and Keeneland retirement 2010.
You were always with me in thought when I went to bed just like my dear friend and family left behind. But, Z, I caught on different days two 18″ walleye fish!! I casted my line out for a week!! I am 66 yrs old., that must sound old to you, but you need to stay active, then you feel younger. With three of us catching we ate a smaller walleye meal every day for a week!! Sioux Narrows waters, called “Lake of the Woods” is just that. It covers miles of waterway, breathless shoreline and islands; awesome eagles in the air and many beaver swimming. So I did enjoy my experience, but it does not come close to my experiences with seeing you race or just seeing you. I think it is within ones heart what they realize they love in life; for me, nothing can come close to you. love with 2 kisses on your soft nose
@everyone: I am one poor reader of the post, I admit, but I would like you all to know at any given time, I read a few, I wish I would spend more time reading more. You are all great in your communicating; I haven’t lately, but I do enjoy when I do read yours. I often do not respond, but what I read of yours enlightens me very much. I am glad I am back home in Wi. ,Dottie has given us an awesome experience in itself, with our Z at heart. I am truly blessed, and with my family doing well. Hope all is well with yours.

Between today’s picture (thanks, Jane!) of sweet “E” giving Judy’s handbag the royal once-over, and Zenyatta’s recent photo capturing her doing the same with Charles’ back pocket, one would be inclined to think that “E” and “Z” might have made superior candidates as the first equine employees of TSA!
Thoroughbreds are so intuitive and exqiuitiely sensitive to their surroundings, and to the people who inhabit their world. They receive the same outside stimuli as humans, but magnified how many times?
A highly developed sense of smell seems to be a common denominator for horses (especially when it involves treats!). The first time I became aware of this, was many years ago, when touring Bluegrass country and reveling in the incredible beauty of the serene elegance of the horse farms. Calumet was in its last gasps as the legendary giant which had sparked the imaginations and fired the daydreams of so many of us racehorse-crazed adolescents growing-up in the 50s and 60s. A haunting nostalgia surrounded the pillared mansion and leaf-swept cemetary, where Calumet’s heroes slept, their racing triumphs emblazoned in the record books for all eternity.
Unsure as to the protocol regarding treats, I had packed a small apple in a zippered plastic bag, and stashed it in a heavy leather purse, with a snap flap. Its presence would defy the sensory gifts of any human, but I did not realize that would not hold true of the equine species!
In the center of a field was a sweet, simple little bay mare, dozing in the late atumn sun. Our guide informed us that she was Sweet Tooth, Broodmare-of-the-Year in 1977, and dam of Our Mims and the hugely-hearted Alydar. Gentle and receptive, we were allowed to pet and stroke her, and she did not so much as flicker an eyelid. BUT! She was aware of far more than I might have guessed, because as we relutantly walked away, I could hear the rustle of leaves and grass from something following directly behind. It was Sweet Tooth, nibbling delicately at the back of my sweater, determined that she not be denied the apple which she alone could detect! It is one of my most cherished memories of that wonderful visit.

Oh Zenyatta, you make me laugh, you are such a character! Well, have to give credit to Dottie Shirreffs though for helping you to put your thoughts out here in the diary, she is doing such a super fantastic job-this diary is fantastic and it is one of the things that I look forward to each and every day.
Very nice to share the photos, always so interesting.
Hope you are enjoying your weekend Zenyatta-Love you lots sweetie!

I love you Z I’ve told you sooo many times on here at CD and Keeneland! I love your sister too! If she makes me 1/2 as happy as you do, I’ll be a happy woman!

Dearest Zenyatta—My Internet connection went down last night, and I couldn’t wish you a good night nor respond to commenters, so I’ll post some now regarding yesterday and catch up later. I wanted to tell you you were TOO CUTE walking right over there and kissing Matt, and ditto for today with walking right over to Karen’s purse and getting those treats!
@HELEN in MI—Your son’s poem is truly lovely. I am so sorry he is no longer with you. No parent should have to bury their child.
@Kathryn Cogswell—I remember that first question that Art Linkletter would ask—pretty clever guy.
@Kathy Kimber— Good move. A Reckless t-shirt is just the thing. A high hoof to you! Have you signed up on Sgt. Reckless’s facebook page? I didn’t see you there, so I linked there to your post here. (I hope you don’t mind!)
@Charlotte Farmer RE: LAMINITIS—Did you see the link I posted a couple days ago to an article about a new stem cell treatment for laminitis, both to relieve pain and to regrow laminae, hoof wall, and sole? A panel of vets discuss the ASTONISHINGLY GOOD RESULTS they have gotten, including having saved the life of dual Grade 1 turf winner Thorn Song.

@Judy Maass Gadwood—Thanks for the link to repairs at Santa Anita. I too hope it works.
@Judy Berube—Thanks for the links!

@OraJean, Lava Man worked?!!! Wow, I did not expect that. What distance and what time? Boy, I sure hope he’s sound. There’d be hell to pay if he were to be injured. I’m going to add him to my virtual stable. One of the horses I was watching last year, Eightyfiveinafifty, has been back on the work tab and had some good works, but he hasn’t been entered in anything yet.
Robyn Mullhausen
TOO CUTE INDEED.
LauraJ
@Trina Nagele, not only was Thorn Song’s life saved, but he is sound enough to stand at stud! Wonderful therapy.
Sharon Passmore
CONGRATS to Zasu!!! What a gutsy move on the rail and stretch rally. Showed same heart as Zenyatta!
