Good Morning to my DEAR FRIENDS,
I hope all of you are having a wonderful Saturday. I am doing GREAT! Yesterday I asked Sarah to bring some TREATS for my guys, Charles, Todd, Andy and all of the others, here at my KY Barn. She and her family have lived in KY for quite some time, thus, she knows all of the FABULOUS GOODIE places. Well, she stopped by Magee’s Pastries (she says it is the best in town) for some special breakfast goodies for them. They looked yummy and were a big hit!
Also, the people who work here at Lane’s End are now trickling in to see me. I am beginning to meet everyone who works here at the farm. It is really fun! They also told me they are reading the Diary each day so I am really working hard to keep everyone up-to-date.
I am continuing to go outside and become more and more acclimated to my new environment. I have to be honest…it is so much fun! Each day, I am becoming so much more comfortable and relaxed in this gorgeous setting. So many of the things are just like CA…I have a barn cat (same color as one at Shirreff’s Barn) named Kitty. They tell me he has been here for quite some time…and he really likes me. I have gorgeous trees to look at and beautiful geese by a pond close to my new paddocks. It is splendid! I just stand and stare at this beautiful setting for hours!
As you know, each day is baby steps to help me to feel more and more relaxed and comfortable. I know several of you have asked why I am wearing a lip chain now and then in some of the photos. I consulted with Dottie and John so I could properly explain this to you. Bottom-line, it is just for my safety and well-being.
Since farm life is new to me and I am really excited and want to explore all of the areas of my new environment, I need a bit of structure at first to be sure I do not do too much too soon. In truth, if left to my own thoughts…I’d probably rush around and skip too many steps…which would not be in my best interest. So, it is applied just to remind me to settle down. Per John, “the way we are using it with me is just a mild way of reminding me to be careful and relax…not to jump around where I could step on or hurt myself.” Since I was 2…this would be done every so often when a new setting was being explored by me…not often but when needed to PROTECT ME. Once I was comfy and everyone knew I was fine, it was immediately removed. The same thing is happening here now.
I respect the fact that my handlers want me safe and this mild little reminder makes ME focus on my safety. Like I said, it is only used briefly and then when I have my focus and am really paying careful attention to what I am doing…it is removed.
John said to tell you it is like a gymnast learning to do a balance beam activity etc. They use the ropes at first to be sure the person does not fall and get hurt. It is simply for safety.
Each day, I really making great progress…if I say so myself. I must be really, really honest…I know girls do not like to talk about their weight…but I am one really big girl (Dottie said we can say 1200 pounds ‘ish’). Thus, I am very, very, very strong and I am feeling great. So, all of the things are being done for my complete safety. I understand this and deeply appreciate the fact that my handlers want me safe and happy. I am so fortunate people care so much about ME! Thank you for also wanting me safe!
I wish all of you a wonderful weekend. There are some great races and games going on the next few days. I do love SPORTS! (Oh, maybe that is because I am one terrific athlete.)
Enjoy you day!
With love,
HUGS TO ALL~

Hey Z, you look gorgeous so you must be very happy. Glad everyone is being careful with you. And what a great picture with John and the Moss’s. So appreciate the updates and photos. It would be terrible to have you in KY with no updates. Hope they gave you a TV to watch football tomorrow!
Amanda
I’m so glad to hear you are enjoying your new home and settling in. I can’t wait to see pictures/videos of you once you have gotten use to everything and are let out in your paddock just to run around and be a horse. We love you Z!

Zen, I still find it hard to believe you are right HERE in Kentucky…..with all the great horses leaving Kentucky, I am SOOOO happy you chose to come here!! I have to tell you when I decorated my tree today I hung the collector’s edition of Rachel BECAUSE Breyer has NOT made one of YOU yet, but I am sure there will be one by next Christmas. I do have my 8X10 of you that came with the Special Edition of BloodHorse….WOW!!! Great Pic! YOU are the most beautiful racehorse EVER!!!!!

Dear Zenyatta:
I am Splash. Boo’s brother. I am an American, Modern Shetland pony. I am only 11 hands, but I think I am a very big boy. You are so lucky that your caretakers use the chain. When I was a baby,…(2 years old) no one wanted me. My owner left me in a tiny stall for a year and never let me out. When my new mamma rescued me, she tried to walk me without a chain, and I jumped on her back, and I hurt myself. She face planted and got gravel under skin.
I only weigh 500 lbs and I knocked her flat on her face. I am VERY strong!!! Can you imagine the damage that YOU could do??? I am a big boy now, and I LOVE my pasture. Now I don’t even need a halter, because I just follow mamma wherever she goes. She even taught me how to pull her in my cart. We go to the store for a beer run. Guess what kind???? You guessed it.
Today, my mamma bought her Zenyatta bobble head to my stall. I tried to groom the mane, then i tried to eat it. Hee hee.
Love
your new friend
Splash xoxox!

Are you getting any exercise other than walking Z? Do they have an indoor arena where they can throw a big ole western saddle on you and trot you around? That’s what we’d do with some of our more “energetic” racers off season…I hope so! Completely understand the lip chain, anyone would be nuts to handle any thoroughbred any other way who was just off the track (let alone the fastest one in the world!) Hey girl…any hints on any of the boys at Lane’s End that have caught your eye? Just wondering if love is in the air ….yet? :)
Sharon
Dottie and team, you are the greatest. It seems like you really understand the anxiety of us Zenyatta fans who don’t understand the intricacies of working with thoroughbreds. Thank you so much for all the information. And to the Queen, all the best as your baby steps lead you to a happy, healthy life on the farm. I look forward to more photos and videos, PLEEEZZ!

YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE, MY ONLY SUNSHINE, YOU MAKE ME HAPPY, WHEN SKIES ARE GREY, YOU NEVER KNOW, Z, HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU, PLEASE DON’T TAKE MY SUNSHINE AWAY!
I’m so happy to hear from you today beautiful girl! This is so awesome that you have a barn kitty who can keep you company along with all the other girls in your barn! I just wish Life is Sweet was in your barn with you so you could catch up, but am happy that she’s at the same farm with you! I am also so happy to know that John is still there with you and that you are getting to know more of your new family at Lane’s End! I think they are starting to understand just how special you are to all of us! You bring me such joy and happiness when nothing else in my life is going right, so thank you! I look so forward to reading what you’re up to everyday! Thank you Dottie for conveying Zenyatta’s thougths so well for all of us that love her so much! Goodnight sweet girl… have some carrots and peppermints before bed! Sweet dreams! xoxo!!!

I’m glad to hear that you have a cat; if you get cold maybe he will snuggle with you! They are great little heaters :) It’s wonderful that so many people are learning about horses and horse care by reading your diary. You should write a book, big girl!
Sondre
I never doubt Team Z – they have brought you to the public eye in so many amazing ways besides racing – which is spectacular in and of itself. To nurture a horse of your magnificance is testimony to their love and dedication to do what’s best for you. That remains evident in your transition to Lane’s End. They know the ropes – they know what works for you, and they are coordinating that with your new handlers. The proof is in the pudding – you never looked better Z! You are one adaptable beauty – keep on dancin’! (-:

Great post Zenny/Dottie/Sarah!!! I am glad she has another barn cat, named Kitty no less. Sounds like a nice happy place for her. I think it’s great Zenny/Sarah sent over pastries for the barn crew. Having a super star in their barn is a little more pressure than usual.

So good to hear you are adjusting Z ! I know all about your chain too! My girl Tara has to have one occassionally! I know your are going to grow a nice thick winter coat and yes, I agree, Kentucky is beautiful! We dropped off a big Christmas stocking at Lane’s End before we came to see you at Keeneland this past Monday ! Hope Santa fills it full of your favorites ! You are such a special Lady and I know the folks at Lane’s End are treating you like a Queen !!!
Thanks Dottie for keeping us n the loop with Lady Z! Luv, Hugs & treats !

Hello sweet Zenyatta. I am so glad you have been having good days. I am new to some of this horse stuff. I never heard of a lip chain but I am sure your family knows what is best for you. I am still learning about horse things. Every time I have seen anything with your family I can see how much they love you and are proud of you. Just take your time and I know God will help you through all this. I think about you so much and wish I could see you but maybe someday. Stay warm and enjoy your new friends. I send lots of love, Shari from Ohio.

Dottie, you are doing a fantastic job!

Sending hugs and nose kisses to you Big Queen Z – Stay safe – know you are very much loved. I miss you!

Dear Zetty,
boy, every up-date is a real eye-opener about race-horses & their life.
I didn’t realize that a big girl like you can get hurt, I mean that things can be so precarious, for your well-being. You’re kinda dainty, aren’t ya? Even with all that weight. In a race, horses have gotten hurt and had to be euthanized, but just steppin’ out, huh, who’d have figured.
Why can’t they just let you & your suitor gallop off into the honeymoon corral, and let things happen that way, rather than that other stuff? Anyway, it’s always great to read you’re & all your people are doing okay.
Socorro
We miss our Queen and wish her the best. Racing is not the same anymore.
Sunny Boyd
PS
Where do you post your new pictures?
Fran
Hi Z-I was not worried at all with the chain. I know it is for safety because we use one on Doozey when she goes to a new place or a show-always in new surroundings so she will be careful. Our Kate (Doozey’s owner and constant rider) was invited to her first formal in high school! Today she got her beautiful winter white long formal! She cleans up nicely, and Doozey will be so proud of her because she is becoming a beautiful young lady.Next week, when we go see Doz at the trainers, I am going to show Doz the picture! She will be pleased! Have a lazy Sunday Z! We love you!

Love the barn cat…they can be such great company. (Just hate when they hunt – I have saved a bunny, from the mouth of one barn cat, and rushed it to an emergency vet – of course, it was a summer Friday evening – only to have the baby bunny put down because the cat did a number, and a cat’s bite is really, really terrible). I also understand about the added measure of control, if need be, without undue pressure – hence the chain. I love Saturdays myself, as I get to jump a big – not as tall as Zenyatta, but a big-boned appendix (1/2 thoroughbred; 1/2 quarter horse), who is about 16.2 but massive – also app. 1200 -1300 lbs. Today, we tried it without a martingale, but she got so excited, tossing her head, and then pulling her head down to grab the bit – and she has a very soft & wide snaffle – that I did need to use the martingale after all….however, still – use the least & softest measure, and then increase a bit as needed. Love these posts……I really hope that no one, ever, expects any upcoming youngster – to fill Z’s shoes. She is an individual, and so will be her offspring. This is nature -I hope all of her babies will be appreciated and loved for who they are – be it racehorses, or maybe one that has a proclivity for dressage (wouldn’t be a surprise)…just that all have the correct amount of time with their mama Z, and whoever is responsible for them, – will it be the Mosses? can take each one as an individual, and have the propensity to see the individual talents of each. Love you, Zenyatta, and love your whole team. Again, thanks, Dottie – the posts are great, and all who read them, have gladdened hearts, and uplifted spirits, afterwards. If only, If ONLY, ALL horses -who – EVERY SINGLE one, has some gift to give – from the therapy horse, to the race horse, to the sport horse, to the driving horse, to the companion horse – if they could each receive love and acknowledgement of the gift they have to give …well, I guess it would be heaven……Merry Christmas, all!

My Sweet Lady Zenyatta, I am thrilled to hear about you starting to enjoy your time there. I have a question for you! How do you make a transition from being prepared each day for racing to not doing any real exercise? I know you must have tons & tons of energy. I know how much you like to run. Are you getting any exercise to calm you down or are they just walking you several times a day. I know that must be so hard because you are such an amazing athlete and still have an amazing drive to run. I don’t know how you can contain that energy! I worry about you having to change into another horse than the horse you are.I pray you can adjust. I love you so much,Zenyatta.
I just want the best for you and that you’ll have a happy and fullfilling rest of your life because you deserve it. You have given the world of horseracing all of yourself and given your fans so much more. You deserved to be taken care of as a Queen. You have earned it! Love, Amanda
Robin
Great to hear from you, Z! I know many people are worrying about your transition from an active California racing barn to a quiet Kentucky farm. Everyone is keeping an eye on you from afar. Can’t wait to hear about the arrangements for visiting the Queen!
Carolyn
Amanda, my thoughts completely. All this week. You stated your thoughts so beautifully. I guess there are no tracks at LE. I hurt for our girl right now in that regard. Dottie, please comment on this. Thank you.

Hi Zenyatta from chilly NH. I look forward to your updates every day and I’m happy you’re adjusting so well. Lane’s End looks like a great place to live. I can’t wait to see more videos of you on Facebook.

what a sweetheart!!

Happy Saturday, Z! Kisses from Massachusetts. I’m happy that you’re becoming more acclimated. I heard the weather was milder (but that a storm might be coming).
You’ve raced enough…it’s time to be a horse and be happy.
Nighty night.
Big kiss.

Ms Zenyatta, Good Saturday to you. Was your day beautiful? I watched your Appreciation Day, Fan Farewell again today. You look so beautiful and happy, and so loving to Mario. With you big, beautiful heart, you will love your new groomers and they will love you, if not, already. Fess up, I cried like a baby, as I still do not understand why you had to leave CA? I bet you could have stayed at Bo Derek’s Ranch, I do not think anyone love horses more that she. Have you thought anymore about a ‘boyfriend’? Tiznow is really handsome, and I read that he stands 17 Hands. I think you would make a cute couple, although he is not worthy of you, no one is, ask Mike! Yes, Queen, you are the greatest Athelete. You are the only athelete I can name that is a perfect influence on kids and adults alike, a mentor, someone we can actually look up to! I cannot wait to get your photo, the lip chain is hardly noticable. I wish it were here now, you are so BEAUTIFUL. I was raised in CA as well, and when I experienced ice and snow in Texas….I should have had a lip chain to help me walk in that stuff! Good night, Queen, Horse of A Lifetime, and glad it was in mine. Talk with you tomorrow, hope you have another post with some exciting adventures to share. O, my friend was a Hollywood Park today and Mr. Jerry Moss walked by, and told him I was on the cell and was a fan, did he have time to say “HI”? Yep, he did. I could not believe it. Tell him thank you for me! Tell Dottie I love her….Good nite..Lisa g

Zenyatta, it was so fun to see Mario all bundled up in a jacket. You looked beautiful in your barn. I love the daily posts. Please keep them coming as well as the videos. I have friends in the UK who are now logged on to your diary. Miss you gorgeous girl.

I wish we could all vote for Horse of the Year. You are the only Horse of the Year for me. I vote Zenyatta!!!!
