Hello,
This is TOO CUTE! Yesterday at Hollywood Park, a few of the 2 year olds MY JOHN has in training breezed down the lane and galloped out nicely. To be honest, this one sure looks familiar to ME! I’d know those hind-quarters anywhere. (Although I must say, these days I am gaining a bit of weight! This comes with eating for 2 you know!) Blush, Blush!
This filly in the photo is my dear relative, Eblouissante! Here she is walking back to Barn 55 after her workout. Amy breezed her. “E” ( by Bernardini) went a very nice, relaxed 3/8ths with 2 other fillies….Minds Eyes (by Macho Uno) and Silent Poetry (by After Market). They each did a very ‘professional’ job for this stage of their training. The clockers got them in 38:80. John was quite pleased with the manner in which these fillies accomplished their lessons yesterday! YIPPEE!
There are so many details to be attended to at this stage of a horse’s career and development! Each of these 2 year olds has already spent time at a training center prior to coming to Barn 55…learning “the basics”. These lessons start with learning how to accept tack to responding to cues from the rider and how to successfully navigate the turns, the straight-away, and change leads.
Once at Barn 55, MY JOHN starts with each horse having a basic idea of what to do….to expanding upon these skills and introducing others that are required to be a race horse. Lots of gate work is necessary. They must also learn to change gears…when to slow down, be patient, handle other horses around them while running…and of course, how to pick up speed to finish strong.
As MY JOHN says, there are lots of BABY STEPS (no pun intended) to be achieved along the way to getting a horse ready for one’s first race…and hopefully the start of a long and successful career.
From all reports, ALL of the babies did a great job yesterday. I’m sending each of them a HIGH HOOF! Cheers to all…..and keep up the good work!
With Love,
Hugs to All~

Queen Z, There are some nice articles about The Vanity and how YOU are missed this year. Hope you are having a great day…here’s a high hoof for the best horse I ever saw run.

Coming to a theatre near-by: Cindy Meehl`s lyric documentary ‘Buck’ [Tales of the legendary, real-life horse whisperer Buckshot Brannaman] quietly won several awards before reaching the more commercial circuit & as ‘Pick of the Week’ reviewed Friday, June 17, 2011, by Andrew O`Hehir http://www.salon.com/entertainment/movies/our_picks/index.html?story=/ent/movies/andrew_ohehir/2011/06/17/buck is now making ‘Top Ten’ lists all around. “Buck gradually reveals that his real therapeutic clients are not horses but the people who`ve screwed them up. As he puts it, ‘the animals who live with us serve as mirrors, and we may not always like what we see .. .’ says O`Hehir; ‘but, sometimes we do.’

@Noor – Only two people ever rode Noor in retirement and John WAS the last person to ride Noor. The only other person, prior to Noor’s arrival at Loma Rica Ranch, to get atop the big black was Lou Machado, who worked for Lin Howard Sr. at his stock farm in Moorpark, CA.

@Lisa g,
Nehro did an amazing job to run so well with a chip on his ankle but of all the Triple Crown stories ArchArchArch running the full mile and a quarter on his broken ankle is the one that leaves me in awe.
Lisa g
@zenyen: AAA, I still cannot believe it, he is the one with the ‘clean break” much worse than the ‘chip’, I call them all breaks as their legs are so delicate considering what they do. I heard that AAA will be retired, this is very sad to me as I think he could have gone a long, long way in his racing career. You are right, how he did that, I have no clue. As humans, could u see us doing that, just walkinn with a ‘clean break’ of the leg! AAA is Awesome, but I wish it did not happen.

@Judy-CA, I do not see the Vanity as being the same, this one will feel strange…thanks for the link, I miss her out there, but glad she is safe and going to have a baby.

Dearest Sweet “Z”,
Good morning! I hope motherhood is agreeing with you and that you are feeling well today! I will check back later for a new ‘Hello’.

To J.B. – I thought the same thing about the song for “B” and “Z”‘s little one :) But when I saw “E” I just thought “Isn’t she pretty!” Could have changed lyrics to less than 2 yrs old! Hugs back, DJ

To Kristen H from Burnsville MN: M. Blowen IS the best . .. and yet — chuckles for the candor. Straighten frames & shades along w/ wielding the occasional red pencil? You are not alone . ..
Trina Nagele
@Kathryn Cogswell–I’m a red pencil wielder too–I posted this above, but perhaps you missed it. IMHO,Michael Blowen did not mistake the meaning of “penultimate.” He put “or last” in parentheses not as an explanation of that word, but as a second possibility. He was saying that John was either the next-to-last person to ride Noor, or the last. We all make mistakes, but Michael didn’t make one here.

Hi, Trina: Thank you .. . and yes, did see MB`s options ^ for the great word for ‘almost last’ with his ‘(last)’ the reader`s choice . .. just couldn`t help chuckling at Kristen`s candor.

Zenyatta, I love those pictures of your half sister. I am also happy that your trainer is doing well with all of your buddies at barn 55. He sounds like a patient man. Being patient is every bit as important as teaching horses how to be good and healthy and win their races. You are one fortunate horse in the sense that you had someone like that as your trainer in your racing days. You are 19 for 20 and despite your losing to Blame by just a nose in last year’s Breeder’s Cup in the only loss you ever had, that’s saying something. You yourself are cold, hard proof that John Shirreffs is doing something right, even if you did start at the very back of the other horses in your races. It’s where you are at the very end that really matters.
