Happy Monday Everyone!
The summer season is upon us now and the weather is getting quite warm and very cozy! The advertisements on both radio and television keep commenting about THE LATEST FASHION ACCESSORIES one needs for SUMMER!
I have never been much of a shopper. MY TEAM always did this for ME. Now Lane’s End is also helping to provide me with my daily essentials.
As you know, I am outside quite a bit and love the time I spend strolling in my paddock. At this time of the year, while I’m outdoors, so are the ‘darling little flies and bugs that come with the summer season’. As a result, I have been outfitted with MY NEW SUMMER ‘MUST HAVE’ ACCESSORY…A FLY MASK!
This MASK (which I am modeling for you in the above photo) is really very comfortable. It fits nicely around my head. The material around my eyes is rather elevated…so the mesh portion of the mask itself is not touching my skin at all. The purpose of this item is 2-fold. Firstly, and most importantly, it helps to keep the ’adorable bugs’ from wanting to be on part of my face or by my eyes while I’m outside grazing and relaxing. Secondly, the fly mask serves as a nice screening aid from the sun for my face and eyes. In this respect, it is much like a pair of sunglasses for a human.
My pals and I are all adorning our MASKS these days whenever we go outside. At first, we looked at each other rather quizzically…to see what “this thing was’ our friends were wearing. As you know, horses don’t use mirrors when trying on something new…so when we saw each other for the first time with this ‘mask’ on…it was rather different. Once we realized everything was fine…and who was who, it was all A-OK! As a matter of fact, we all decided we looked TOO CUTE in them!
Truthfully, these FLY MASKS are a great invention. I have seen them before, but never worn one until now. I know MY JOHN has used them periodically at the barn for a horse who may be a bit light sensitive. At Barn 55, the horse would wear the mask during the day while walking around the barn or in the stall. The primary purpose of this was to protect the horse’s eyes from any glaring light. Then when outside training each day and during the races, he/she would not need to use the mask. Everything would be fine! I must say, this is just another way to be sure a horse is always as comfortable as possible. It also allows another opportunity for a trainer or farm to meet the individual needs and sensitivities of an equine athlete.
My pals and I all agree…these masks are WINNERS!
With Love,
Hugs to All~

Too cute, Miss Zenyatta! You look very styling out there with your mask! Sometimes we use them on my cousin’s quarter horses when out grazing! They agree that it is very stylish! :) Some of the mares are also becoming mommies!
Hooves crossed, love you Mama Z! <3
Barbara Grimaldi
Well if that isn’t the too-cutest thing! And you look great in it, Zenyatta!!! I think these would be great for police horses, too, who have hard work to do. Leave it to Team Z–always an education! Enjoy the outdoors, Zenny! Now you’re all set!!! Love you!
Janet Cutting
I think that is so funny about how the horses take each others mask off–I bet Zenny will try that–too cute!!!!!!

Zenyatta looks good in her fly mask; however, Fly Predators are another option. We start using these little knat sized critters every March and sprinkle them in the barn and pastures each month until Oct. They don’t bother the horses or people and their job is to burrow into the fly larvae and prevent the flies from hatching out. These really work and we don’t see any flies during fly season. Haven’t used any other form of fly control in four or five years. No flies on the horses keep the horses very happy. Also, am very happy about the pregnancy.

My own horse, Treasured Moment, sports one of these masks too! Most people look at her and then ask us if there’s something wrong with her eyes. lol

Oh Z – you should see what I’m wearing – a fly mask with an extension that mom made that covers my nose and everything – it looks silly but it does protect me from those BEASTS!
Your fren,
KIMBERLY
Oh Z, You look adorable in your new shades. Your family in Kentucky and California are so concerned about you. They are not alone!!! We all love you.
Karen Mitchell
Zenyatta, I just adore you and everything about you. Great post.
@Judy Berube — thanks so much for both links. The article on MMM and Stay Thirsty was interesting. MMM’s work times were amazing. And special thanks for the Belmont TV coverage schedule. I can program my DVR and not worry I’ll miss anything, while spending the day with my folks (her 97th birthday and their 61st wedding anniversary).

Good evening Zenyatta,
wow, look at you wearing a beauty mask, too cool.
I wonder if horses get cataracts, most wild life, and domestic dogs have them from sunlight exposure. I bet horses can get those, too.
Anyway your shades are truly the most, the baddest, the coolest.
I’m glad you & your paddock friends are all fitted with them for the summer :) :) :)
Thanks dear people. :)
Well, it’s too darn hot here, hope you have it cooler?
Have a swell night & dreams of mints and all your favs.

Will the Moss’s and Lane’s End allow the public to come visit Zenyatta if so when??
What are the Plans for Zenyatta and the Public other than the health of her foal wich comes first.
I love reading the blog on a daily basis wich is fun to read and hear of the Zenyatta at Lane’s End and the People at Barn 55 in California.

Hi Zenny: You look so fashionable with your new accessory. I bet it was really funny when you first looked at your friends wearing their new beauty masks. Zenny, do you really have a baby bump. I didn’t think you would start showing until almost the very end when you are almost due. Is that right? Take care. Enjoy! Love, Linda

Wow! you look great in that mask. I just hope those bugs stay away from your lovely ears. Those “adorable” bugs can get nasty sometimes. I love you Queen Z. Hugs and kisses!

Your fly mask is lovely! Now you are a real “star” hiding behind your shades :) Some fly masks come with ear covers, too; do any of your friends wear that style to protect their ears? Your own ears look adorable peeking out of the mask, by the way!
I have heard that some farms turn the mares out at night in the summer when it is cooler and there are fewer bugs, and keep them indoors during the day. Does Lane’s End do this or do you girls always go out during the day and sleep inside at night?
Karen
Big Brown wears one of these also!
I have a question – do most mares give birth standing up or laying down? My dogs usually were laying down, but giraffes give birth standing up. What a drop! So what do most mares do?

Great shades! You truly are a fantastic model! I bet you can wear anything and make it look fabulous! Glad that the flies and bugs are being kept at bay!
@eastcoastkid: Loved the “fascinator” observation! Zenny’s is more flattering than some of those at the royal wedding, but then, she IS a Queen!!

Great fly mask Zenyatta! They do serve a good purpose but you make it a fashion statement! Too cute! ;-)

My horses wear them too Zenyatta!!! You look good in yours!!

Hmmm.. Weird??
M2 + Little Bit & Ready Lady (The team from the Little Bit Ranch)
Little Bit and Ready Lady wear theirs all the time. Actually lick their lips when I put them on. I remember the first time they were together and I put their masks on. They didn’t recognize each other at first and it was sooo funny watching them. Just as you described. Crazy kiddos!

A girl has to have the right accessories and sunscreen to enjoy the sun. Those “adorable little pest” can really be bothersome. Enjoy the yummy blue grass and soak up the sun…A life deserving for a Queen.

Hi Zenny,
Your fly mask is great! They are so much better now, than years ago.
… To those who were around in the late 60’s…, remember the masks had long leather strips dangeling over the eyes (like a long forelock) to shew the flys away. And no velcro, just a buckle.

Good morning Zenny, It;s a nasty morning here in Fort Erie, rain, thunder and lightening so once again we are wet which encourages those nasty bugs. The mosquitoes will be really bad if this rain doesn’t stop soon. I get bitten badly so I think it’s time for me to be shopping for a fly mask but I’d need one that covers me from head to toe. What a change for you after the bug free Barn 55. Have a nice day with your friends and keep those masks on.

You look adorable! I am surprised that you never wore a fly mask before until now. You adjust so well to everything. I have a picture of you walking in the snow when you first arrived in Kentucky. Brrrrr. That was a huge adjustment to the weather. I bet you’re loving sunshine, rich lush grass, and lots of girlfriends! You’re one in a million.
