Happy Monday Everyone!
The summer season is upon us now and the weather is getting quite warm and very cozy! The advertisements on both radio and television keep commenting about THE LATEST FASHION ACCESSORIES one needs for SUMMER!
I have never been much of a shopper. MY TEAM always did this for ME. Now Lane’s End is also helping to provide me with my daily essentials.
As you know, I am outside quite a bit and love the time I spend strolling in my paddock. At this time of the year, while I’m outdoors, so are the ‘darling little flies and bugs that come with the summer season’. As a result, I have been outfitted with MY NEW SUMMER ‘MUST HAVE’ ACCESSORY…A FLY MASK!
This MASK (which I am modeling for you in the above photo) is really very comfortable. It fits nicely around my head. The material around my eyes is rather elevated…so the mesh portion of the mask itself is not touching my skin at all. The purpose of this item is 2-fold. Firstly, and most importantly, it helps to keep the ’adorable bugs’ from wanting to be on part of my face or by my eyes while I’m outside grazing and relaxing. Secondly, the fly mask serves as a nice screening aid from the sun for my face and eyes. In this respect, it is much like a pair of sunglasses for a human.
My pals and I are all adorning our MASKS these days whenever we go outside. At first, we looked at each other rather quizzically…to see what “this thing was’ our friends were wearing. As you know, horses don’t use mirrors when trying on something new…so when we saw each other for the first time with this ‘mask’ on…it was rather different. Once we realized everything was fine…and who was who, it was all A-OK! As a matter of fact, we all decided we looked TOO CUTE in them!
Truthfully, these FLY MASKS are a great invention. I have seen them before, but never worn one until now. I know MY JOHN has used them periodically at the barn for a horse who may be a bit light sensitive. At Barn 55, the horse would wear the mask during the day while walking around the barn or in the stall. The primary purpose of this was to protect the horse’s eyes from any glaring light. Then when outside training each day and during the races, he/she would not need to use the mask. Everything would be fine! I must say, this is just another way to be sure a horse is always as comfortable as possible. It also allows another opportunity for a trainer or farm to meet the individual needs and sensitivities of an equine athlete.
My pals and I all agree…these masks are WINNERS!
With Love,
Hugs to All~

You look Beautiful…I think I would want that Mask to keep those little pesky insects so that I could enjoy grazing in peace! Have fun with your “Masked” friends!!!

@LauraJ – I agree about the length of the all the posting. At the top of your screen should be a Toolbar with Edit. Click on it–one of the drop down boxes will be FIND ON THIS PAGE. Click on it and then put in whatever name you want to check on, even your own. It will take you through all the posting, singling out just that specific word or words.
Hope this helps.

I always use fly masks on my riding horses when they are turned out. They will feel honored to be wearing the same accessories as Zenny.

Hi Big Mama, gee you look good in anything, my love. My horses had those and they really appreciated them to the point they’d walk right into them as we held them up.
@Thank you Laura J for the link on Mr. Besilu, wow is he a beauty, and he is out of my fav stallion “Indy”. I can’t wait to see him run.
Luv you Z and kisses on your nose

Hello my sweet Zenny. You look too cute with your mask. There’s nothing I hate worse than seeing a poor horse with flies all around its eyes (although you couldn’t blame the flies for wanting to get close to you, Zenny!) I’m so glad that Lane’s End is using masks on you and the other horses. I hope you’re not too uncomfortable in this heat. It’s supposed to be in the 90’s the next two days, and I always wonder how you horses can stand being out in this heat all day. I can’t help but worry about you, Zenny, because I love you so much, but I know Lane’s End will take good care of you. Loving you in Lexington :-)
LauraJ
@Charlotte, I’d also like a faster way of findng older posts. ;-)

Somehow, with your new head gear you remind me of one of those great medieval jousting horses. All you need is to display your colors—a bit of turquoise and bright pink piping around the mask.

sorry you have to wear a bug mask. Out here in CA we don’t have them, but that humidity and standing water bring them out. I’m sure you look great though and need to stay safe both you and the little one.

Very stylish Z. My horse has the Cashel that also covers his ears. He puts his head down every morning so I can put it on to protect him from those nasty flies. TOO CUTE!

@Theresa Buck – thanks for the M. Smith link…I think big mama Z will always be the love of his life.

Zenny-you “never were much of a shopper”-too funny! Glad you and The Girls like your masks-our boys like their masks, too, but as some others have said, some days they are the play toys- even with double velcro we find them in the darndest places! You really do look beautiful, sweet girl. Love you.
@Dottie and Team Z: Thank you!
@Fellow Z friends: Greatly enjoyed all your funny and informative posts today!

You are TOO CUTE with your styling flymask. See if they can get you one in your TEAM colors. That would be awesome. Stay well and relax in these beautiful sunny days. Love from Oregon, where it is raining again.

Well, Zenny, you look TOO CUTE in anything you wear! It is good to hear that Lane’s End is very concerned for their horses comfort. Those flies are nasty.
Thank you Sarah for the photo. You are quite good at sending us pictures of our Zenny.

You do look gorgeous! The fly masks are a great idea; I too, have seen flies just piled in and around horses eyes that are turned out! They look miserable.. We used the fly sheets in the summer at the racetrack.. those are nice too.I wonder how much you will end up weighing when you are full term. I know they said right before you left the raetrak, you weighed 1200 lbs. And then I heard you put on about 200 lbs. in a couple of months at Lane’s End. (I guess you are getting a grass belly)So, I am curious, by your 11th month, just how much you will be tipping the scales at, big girl! We all love and pray for you, Zenyatta! Have a good week, just don’t get too hot, drink lots of fresh water!!

This is a great item to donate to organizations that care for horses!

Zen absolutely fabulous look for the summer, and we don’t want any premature crowfeet around those gorgeous eyes!

Hope your stablemates leave your mask alone. I have one horse who likes to remove them from all the other horses in the field.
