Happy Monday Everyone!
The summer season is upon us now and the weather is getting quite warm and very cozy! The advertisements on both radio and television keep commenting about THE LATEST FASHION ACCESSORIES one needs for SUMMER!
I have never been much of a shopper. MY TEAM always did this for ME. Now Lane’s End is also helping to provide me with my daily essentials.
As you know, I am outside quite a bit and love the time I spend strolling in my paddock. At this time of the year, while I’m outdoors, so are the ‘darling little flies and bugs that come with the summer season’. As a result, I have been outfitted with MY NEW SUMMER ‘MUST HAVE’ ACCESSORY…A FLY MASK!
This MASK (which I am modeling for you in the above photo) is really very comfortable. It fits nicely around my head. The material around my eyes is rather elevated…so the mesh portion of the mask itself is not touching my skin at all. The purpose of this item is 2-fold. Firstly, and most importantly, it helps to keep the ’adorable bugs’ from wanting to be on part of my face or by my eyes while I’m outside grazing and relaxing. Secondly, the fly mask serves as a nice screening aid from the sun for my face and eyes. In this respect, it is much like a pair of sunglasses for a human.
My pals and I are all adorning our MASKS these days whenever we go outside. At first, we looked at each other rather quizzically…to see what “this thing was’ our friends were wearing. As you know, horses don’t use mirrors when trying on something new…so when we saw each other for the first time with this ‘mask’ on…it was rather different. Once we realized everything was fine…and who was who, it was all A-OK! As a matter of fact, we all decided we looked TOO CUTE in them!
Truthfully, these FLY MASKS are a great invention. I have seen them before, but never worn one until now. I know MY JOHN has used them periodically at the barn for a horse who may be a bit light sensitive. At Barn 55, the horse would wear the mask during the day while walking around the barn or in the stall. The primary purpose of this was to protect the horse’s eyes from any glaring light. Then when outside training each day and during the races, he/she would not need to use the mask. Everything would be fine! I must say, this is just another way to be sure a horse is always as comfortable as possible. It also allows another opportunity for a trainer or farm to meet the individual needs and sensitivities of an equine athlete.
My pals and I all agree…these masks are WINNERS!
With Love,
Hugs to All~

Glad to see precautions are being taken to keep those nasty bugs out of your eyes. You probably didn’t have to deal with that as much out in California. Unfortunately, here in the East and Midwest, it’s an inconvenient part of summer. I wish they had those when I had my horses. we had to put a special ointment around their eyes, and it sure was gooey. I’d love to see a picture of you with your friends all wearing your masks.

You look simply mahvelous, dahling!

Hi, Zenny,
Glad you and the Baby Bump are doing great. I like your new fashion statement and and it sure makes sense that it makes being outside much more pleasant. You can spend your time having fun instead of flicking away those pesky flying critters!!
So many of us hang out at your Facebook page just to have a close connection to you, and I can tell when we all are missing you even more than at other times: we start posting videos of your races, interviews, etc. just so we can commisserate with each other about you. I found a great video that was in a foreign language only it had a couple of great interviews with your John and some fabulous pictures and video footage of you in your various daily activities, including taking a nap! I re-posted the interview with Don Robinson from Jennifer Wirth-Ice’s blog, The Saturday Post, where he talks about his time with you at his farm. I think it just makes us all feel better to have a community of Zenyatta fans to “hold hands” in cyberspace and reminisce about you.
BIG NEWS: Your Facebook page now has over 85,000 fans!!! Just so very special and it is a constant daily reminder that people hear about you every day and they still want to check up on you and share experiences, videos, and racing info. What is really a tribute to you, I think, is the proliferation of other horses who have Facebook pages! Some are fan-based, but many are by the connections. You have led the way in showing there is a lot of interest in the sport by normal, every-day folks and they enjoy getting to know the thoroughbred athletes.
Big race coming up Saturday, the Belmont! Who are you picking!!
Big, big hugs! Your friend, Ann Maree

@Barbara Grimaldi (from #264), Zenyatta is not yet eligible for the Hall of Fame. There is a 5-year wait, so she will become eligible for nomination in 2015. She will no doubt be inducted in her first year of eligibility.

Zenny – it’s just TOO CUTE, fascinators for horses! Yours is much more elegant than the one that was worn at the recent royal wedding and I’m sure Queen Elizabeth would agree. Yours would bring more at auction too, HINT HINT Dottie. Seriously, it’s nice to know that you are so well cared for and that your new fashion item is keeping you safe and well.

Oh Zenny, you look so glam – glad to see that they are taking good care of you! One of my horses has allergies and her eyes water and itch – then she scratches and if I don’t control it, I wind up with a scratched cornea, meds about 6 times a day and she is miserable – so- she wears a fly mask 12 months a year any time that she is out of the barn. The mask filters sun, dust, pollen, etc. as well as flys in the summer and generally keeps down problems. I also put lubricating drops in her eyes morning and night! The things we do for our babies!! (thanks Dottie)
@Rosemarie B. – as someone else posted, they sell them in different sizes at most any tack shop or feed store that sells horse supplies – you can also order at Stateline tack (as well as other online horse supply sites.) I have also purchased fly collars from them that work well with my horses. Be sure and get the mask that has a double Velcro closure as they are almost impossible for the horse to remove and lose in the pasture.
Brenda
OOps – I forgot to say yet another great portrait of you by Sarah.

Z…I Love the mask! I think you need a fly mask with ears to protect them…I mean, they’re part of what makes you you! Love ya!

Hey, Zenny. Love the mask. Question for you. Is fly spray still used for the body and legs to keep bot flies from laying their eggs. “Back in the day” it’s what we used on our horses to keep from having to scrape the eggs off of the horses legs. Just wondering.
@Jean from Texas. The chances of your seeing Z now are slim and none since she is in foal. The main job of Lane’s End now is to keep her calm, happy and safe from any diseases or illnesses that can be transmitted on clothes or shoes, etc., while she is carrying that foal. Yes, you can see the stallions, but not the mares. Guess we all have to be happy with all that we have here on this website.

THOSE MASKS COME WITH FACES ON THEM, BIG GIRLY EYES, ECT. MY HORSES ARE SUPER BAD ABOUT PULLING THEM OFF. THEY HAVE A VELCROW CLOSER ON THEM. GREAT GAME TO THEM. PULLING EACH OTHERS HEAD AROUND, THESE ALSO DO THIS WITH THEIR HALTERS, BOYS, BOYS, HAVING TOO MUCH FUN. LOVE TO ALL SHERRY D. WV.

You are too cute Zenyatta and really look great in your new summer accessory.
Jean
You look “Fabulous Darling” now you need some extentions for your beautiful tail to help with the rest of your body! I have seen it done…that and Avon’s Skin So Soft. It really keeps the flys away. You are just so cute and I know everyone is taking really good care of you in every way. You are the best and everything you need to keep you comfortable will be done. I love it that these are available. But where is the BLING for our girl? Love you Zenyatta you are so cute.
Kathy B.
Thanks for all the good information Zenny! I have seen horses at Hollywood Park wear these, and was so confused as to their purpose that I asked one of the riders! They do look a little odd but I’m glad they are comfortable! I’ll bet the horses in my home state of Florida wear them a lot as there are LOTS of “adorable bugs” there!
Meredith
At least you are leaving them on. Our horses always seem to find a way to get them off and stomp them into the manure. But then they don’t have the lovely pastures that you do.

http://www.horse.com has a variety of fly masks, sheets, leg wraps, etc. at reasonable prices. They have a fly bonnet with ears for $9.99. Lowest prices guaranteed. You can buy fly predators (keep flys from becoming adults by preying on their larvae). My horses like to spend most of the day inside the barn and be out morning, evening and at night. They are not locked in.

Dearest Zenny, Horse and Man is featuring YOU today! It is a wonderful site working to spread horse knowledge and lore and to raise money every month for a different horse charity. Everyone is invited at the bottom to “drop something in the bucket.” The originator, Dawn Diovera, had the idea that so many of us can’t afford to make a big donation and might be embarrassed to send in a small donation (just “a drop in the bucket,” so to speak), but by donating to the Bucket Fund, all our donations can be pooled to make a significant contribution to a worthy rescue every month. Sometimes the rescue cases are truly sad stories, so it’s nice when YOU for example get a starring spot to lift everyone’s spirits. http://horseandman.com/
@LYNN MARTIN—You can see a darling picture of a QUARTER-HORSE MOM WITH HER TWIN BABIES (NOT A RESCUE SITUATION)by scrolling down to the entry for Saturday, June 4, on the blog Horse and Man (seventh picture down on Sat.). The babies each weigh about 35 pounds, a little under half the normal weight for a single quarter-horse foal. I believe it was stated here earlier that if a Thoroughbred is determined to be carrying twin embryos, an effort is made to reduce to the pregnancy to one, for health reasons.

Hi Zenny, I can see that the mask is a very good idea for all pourposes you mentioned for the horses and I’m glad they are being used for you and the other horses. They need to have someing like that for large dogs that stay outside because they have the same problems. Flys can really make animals miserable. This was a interesting Monday newsfeed from you with a lovely picture of you showing the mask. I have learned alot from you about horses which I knew nothing about in the past. I did forget how long you are pregnant before your foal is born. I thouhgt you said 11 months. What is your due date? It seems to me that it is close to your April 1st Birthday. Glad you are out grazeing in your paddock alot and enjoying nice weather. The warmth of the sun is probably good for you. Love you much Zenny.
