Happy Monday Everyone!
The summer season is upon us now and the weather is getting quite warm and very cozy! The advertisements on both radio and television keep commenting about THE LATEST FASHION ACCESSORIES one needs for SUMMER!
I have never been much of a shopper. MY TEAM always did this for ME. Now Lane’s End is also helping to provide me with my daily essentials.
As you know, I am outside quite a bit and love the time I spend strolling in my paddock. At this time of the year, while I’m outdoors, so are the ‘darling little flies and bugs that come with the summer season’. As a result, I have been outfitted with MY NEW SUMMER ‘MUST HAVE’ ACCESSORY…A FLY MASK!
This MASK (which I am modeling for you in the above photo) is really very comfortable. It fits nicely around my head. The material around my eyes is rather elevated…so the mesh portion of the mask itself is not touching my skin at all. The purpose of this item is 2-fold. Firstly, and most importantly, it helps to keep the ’adorable bugs’ from wanting to be on part of my face or by my eyes while I’m outside grazing and relaxing. Secondly, the fly mask serves as a nice screening aid from the sun for my face and eyes. In this respect, it is much like a pair of sunglasses for a human.
My pals and I are all adorning our MASKS these days whenever we go outside. At first, we looked at each other rather quizzically…to see what “this thing was’ our friends were wearing. As you know, horses don’t use mirrors when trying on something new…so when we saw each other for the first time with this ‘mask’ on…it was rather different. Once we realized everything was fine…and who was who, it was all A-OK! As a matter of fact, we all decided we looked TOO CUTE in them!
Truthfully, these FLY MASKS are a great invention. I have seen them before, but never worn one until now. I know MY JOHN has used them periodically at the barn for a horse who may be a bit light sensitive. At Barn 55, the horse would wear the mask during the day while walking around the barn or in the stall. The primary purpose of this was to protect the horse’s eyes from any glaring light. Then when outside training each day and during the races, he/she would not need to use the mask. Everything would be fine! I must say, this is just another way to be sure a horse is always as comfortable as possible. It also allows another opportunity for a trainer or farm to meet the individual needs and sensitivities of an equine athlete.
My pals and I all agree…these masks are WINNERS!
With Love,
Hugs to All~

Today while I was waiting to check out at a Walgreens in Hot Springs, AR, I heard a checker and a customer talking about you and how excited they were about your in foal status. Then another person chimed it with, “I know isn’t great!?” I had to smile… your popularity in this town has yet to dim.
Like your fly mask, comfort and fashion.

Dear Queen Momma Zenyatta –
You look stunning in your new “face hat”. I was thinking the same things as Christine and others – Zenny could decorate her “face hat” with creative items, or even wear one in the colors of the Mosses, since it’s impossible to see those colors now without associating the teal and pink with Queen Z!. The one regret – we can’t see her pretty and distinctive white blaze as easily.
Big Hugs to Z, little Z, and the inventor of fly masks.

Happy Monday Z,
Lane’s End sure takes great care of you and your friends. The mask doesn’t interfere with munching, which is so important. Love you and love to all of you. Judy and Russ

But we can’t see your pretty face!
I hate flies too…thankfully, something was designed to fix the problem.
Don’t forget your sunscreen!

@Rosemarie Bandura, fly masks do not have to be custom made. There are sizes to fit various horses. You can get them with or without ear covers. Some also have snout covers. You can get them on-line from any vendor that supplies horse tack. They are pretty inexpensive. Here’s one supplier: http://www.doversaddlery.com/category.asp?c=4745&ids=619233406

as always you are too cute :-) We LOVE you

Hi Z! Like your fly mask. Dozey has several; a couple of designer ones with glasses on the front (too cute). They have some very very cute ones on the market. Doz does not have her fly mask on yet. We have not yet had the “bug” problem, but that time is coming within the next week. She also wears a fly sheet to keep the flies from bugging her during the day. It also keeps her coat from bleaching out. She wears a simple light weight one that easily washes in the machine. She has a couple of the fly sheets took. Have a wonderful day Z. Cold her-thunder, lightening and rain last night. Today is still cloudy. xxoo until tomorrow.

@Roxi Cook: that virus is spread by contact, usually nose to nose or bucket to bucket,so you probably have very few worries. Glad you’re being safe, tho.
Yes, mares can have twins. It’s usually not a good outcome, but it does happen from time to time. If it’s known, one embryo is usually pinched off. I had a mare who had twins and LOTS of legs were presented while foaling! We got them sorted out and both were born alive and the mare was all right. One baby is much healthier, bigger, stronger and what you want!

And, it would be nice if I spelled correctly on my post!!!!

Oh Z, I would love to take you shopping at Zaks (get it?) Fifth Avenue!
Are you having any morning sickness? My sisters didn’t have much but I have heard it is horrible. Hope you are enjoying your summer!
linda
You wear it well.

Beautiful Z:
I always used the masks in the Texas heat
when I had 7 horses. People driving by my pasture would stop and ask if the horses were sick; could they see? Your climate and lifestyle is very now and I’m glad to know that you are still being pampered.
XOXOXO

Gotta Love Zenyatta! One thing missing from your stylin’ shades – YOUR CROWN Queen Z!!

It is truly a Fashion Statement Zenyatta. And of course, you pull it off quite well. It will be a must have this summer for all fillies and mares across the country, cause as we know you are a trend setter. But darn, I can’t see your “baby bump”. And yes, it must have been most interesting seeing each other in your new summertime accessories. You take care and, I, of course, am sending all my love your way.

You look just adorable in your new fly mask!! Very stylish you are! We use head nets here in the northeast during the pesty Spring black fly season when gardening!!

I like flymasks on horses,
since they allow the horses to be outside without the use of so many pesticides around their faces.

Hello Zeny: My – such adorable shades! I love sunglasses too. Never without one. Must be cute to see you and your friends walking around with those shades! Wish I could kiss you right now! Hugs, Marilu
@ PeggyOne – thanks for the info on the Virus. Heard about it. Hope they find a cure soon.

You look stunning, Dahlin :)! haha stay cool, Z! It’s getting hot out there!

I’m still cracking up! This is really a cute story. I’ve seen these masks on other horses when visiting the farms and thought that they made a great deal of sense. I HATE flies of any kind… and the thought of them buzzing around the eyes and face gives me the creeps! We just had our “midge” season and those annoying buggers were all over the place — one needs a full body screen to keep them off! Thank you for sharing your new fashion statement— you look adorable!

keepin’ those flyin’ critters at bay!! yes! stay cool, Zenyatta and enjoy the luxurious grass!

@Jeanne from TX, in addition to what Roxi said about pathogens, it’s a business decision. Each farm has its own policies regarding tours. LE chooses not to offer them during breeding season; Claiborne does. Some farms don’t offer tours period. I’m not aware of any farm that includes the broodmares on tours. Farms are set up to handle visitors to their stallion facilities, as stallions must be available for inspection by potential customers looking to breed their mares. Stallion barns are equipped with amenities such as reception areas and parking lots. The broodmare barns are just that—barns. They are spread out over the farm’s acreage (3000 in the case of Lane’s End, IIRC). There is only limited parking for work trucks and the like. So it is not practical for farms to offer visits to the broodmares (especially in Zenyatta’s case–they’d be swamped!). It is possible that Lane’s End will make some sort of arrangements for future visits—I hope so—but if they do, you can be sure said visits will be by special arrangement with a very limited number of visitors allowed. No one who is not connected with Zenyatta will ever be able to just drop by to see her. Sorry–not trying to be mean here, but you did ask.

Yes, fly masks are great and I’m so glad to see a regular lead line on your halter. Enough of the stud chain business.
