Happy Monday Everyone!
The summer season is upon us now and the weather is getting quite warm and very cozy! The advertisements on both radio and television keep commenting about THE LATEST FASHION ACCESSORIES one needs for SUMMER!
I have never been much of a shopper. MY TEAM always did this for ME. Now Lane’s End is also helping to provide me with my daily essentials.
As you know, I am outside quite a bit and love the time I spend strolling in my paddock. At this time of the year, while I’m outdoors, so are the ‘darling little flies and bugs that come with the summer season’. As a result, I have been outfitted with MY NEW SUMMER ‘MUST HAVE’ ACCESSORY…A FLY MASK!
This MASK (which I am modeling for you in the above photo) is really very comfortable. It fits nicely around my head. The material around my eyes is rather elevated…so the mesh portion of the mask itself is not touching my skin at all. The purpose of this item is 2-fold. Firstly, and most importantly, it helps to keep the ’adorable bugs’ from wanting to be on part of my face or by my eyes while I’m outside grazing and relaxing. Secondly, the fly mask serves as a nice screening aid from the sun for my face and eyes. In this respect, it is much like a pair of sunglasses for a human.
My pals and I are all adorning our MASKS these days whenever we go outside. At first, we looked at each other rather quizzically…to see what “this thing was’ our friends were wearing. As you know, horses don’t use mirrors when trying on something new…so when we saw each other for the first time with this ‘mask’ on…it was rather different. Once we realized everything was fine…and who was who, it was all A-OK! As a matter of fact, we all decided we looked TOO CUTE in them!
Truthfully, these FLY MASKS are a great invention. I have seen them before, but never worn one until now. I know MY JOHN has used them periodically at the barn for a horse who may be a bit light sensitive. At Barn 55, the horse would wear the mask during the day while walking around the barn or in the stall. The primary purpose of this was to protect the horse’s eyes from any glaring light. Then when outside training each day and during the races, he/she would not need to use the mask. Everything would be fine! I must say, this is just another way to be sure a horse is always as comfortable as possible. It also allows another opportunity for a trainer or farm to meet the individual needs and sensitivities of an equine athlete.
My pals and I all agree…these masks are WINNERS!
With Love,
Hugs to All~

@Judy Berube–The only way you can lose now is if your horse gets struck by lightning in the starting gate. Just don’t try to find a winner the same way that Richard Dreyfuss came up with Fleet Treat. When you are in a down mood, slip that one into the DVD player.

@Karen, they give birth lying down, although they spend much of their labor on their feet. Sometimes they will lie down and get up a few times. If you want to see the whole process, there are lots of YouTube videos of mares foaling.

@Marshall (a girls name)…some of the “hats” at that wedding would have looked good ONLY on Zenny…she is the only one with enough style and panache to get away with some of those “facinators”. Truly beautiful “people” make even riduculous accessories look good and she is a truly beautiful creature…

Hi Zenyatta. You look beautiful in your summer finery. But, you could wear a sack and still be the most beautiful horse that ever lived. We are so thankful that you and your friends are so well taken care of, you are all truly loved. Here in Texas we are hitting triple digits – it is extremely hot. Stay cool, eat well for two, have loads of fun in your paddock and with all your BBFs. Love you, Angel in Disguise.

@Kari – now you made me cry! I didn’t expect that – no reply was needed, but know what I said was heartfelt….and true! And, yes, I can compare you to Dottie. While the comparison you yourself may believe to be small, there is a huge one that cannot be denied: Yes, you two both lead different lives for sure, but you BOTH have a zeal & zest for life, Zenny, and people (and their feelings) that truly is undeniable. You never give up nor give in, and you BOTH go on to instill more inspiration for us all. By direct or indirect means, this inspiration, by enlivening my life, has infused more breath into my soul with more joy, kindness, compassion, and love. This Zennyland of “ours” has indeed been transformational. It moves me to be that better being – it has brought me full circle, the transformation of myself, I am now complete in that enveloping spirit and it will never leave – it is imprinted on my heart forever more. Thanks to you Kari, Zenny, Dottie, John, the Mosses and all in Zennyland of our dreams. I love you all and thank you for touching my life so fully, bless you! The clouds indeed do fall away to reveal the mountain tops! Now maybe I can be a human “dumpling” too! (And, yes, I am the big goof lost in cyberspace!) Love you more Karen

Very fashionable, Zen! Hope you and your buddies are all well. I was just curious how often they do pregnancy scans past the 60 day point. Does it need to be frequent or not so often once you get to that stage?

My adorable Z. You are just too cute! I bet it was fun the first time you met your friends with them on!! I wonder what you all said to one another.(hee) Like years ago on the Lone Ranger show, they always asked, “Who was that masked man?” I am so grateful for your good care my sweet mama, and the others too.
Love you, with 2 kisses on your soft nose (one for baby Z)
Randy
I love those fly masks… I’m sure they make a huge difference to horses’ comfort and wish they had been available back when I had my horse. All I had was one of those “ear bonnets” (for lack of a proper name) which helped a little but still left the face unprotected. Whoever came up with these see through mesh hoods was a genius… horse hoodies!

Dear Terry Crow:
Watched it last night. Laughing all over again. Hugs, J.B.

Oh beautiful Zenyatta, I am so glad you are staying comfortable. I love hearing from you!

@Jeanne
There are many bacteria out there that you can pick up from one farm to another. These will cause the mare to abort. Also, any kind of stress can cause the mare to abort. While Z is different about people than most horses she could carry back bacteria to the other horses and they could abort.
For reading I suggest Dr Phyllis Lose Blessed are the broodmares. It’s an older book but you can easily understand some of the dilemmas faced by the farms. This book is in plain English–many you don’t have to have serious science degrees to understand them! Trustee, I don’t and I got most of it. Also another beauty of it is that it is available for kindle and iPad–so you don’t need to race off to the bookstore.
.
This is why in the past although I’ve been bashed for it–I suggested Marestare or another such company. People can visit you via the Internet and no fears of spreading anything.

Dear Zennie & Team-Z,
You look lovely, as usual, in your new Fly Mask!! My horses use to always wear Fly Masks, during the day, in the hot weather, to keep those pesty flies off their heads and eyes. I use to spray the woolly areas with fly repellant befor putting it on the horse’s head. Then I found this neat gismo, that contained one battery and emmitted a sound wave that repelled flies and mosquitoes. It was the size of my thumb and I made a little pocket on the fly mask to put it in. Anyway, seeing your picture wearing a fly mask, brought back such fond memories…thanks for the “up-dates”. Enjoy your warm Kentucky Summer.
Hugs to you all. Fondly, OraJean

Zenny…you look so cute in your fly mask. My mare has quite a bit of white on her nose so she wears the mask with the ears covered and the extended mask over the nose. All three wear masks and fly wraps on their legs to limit the stomping to get rid of the flys. We all try to keep our equine friends comfortable!

Good Evening My Sweet Lady Zenyatta You are just styling in your new fly mask! You look great in whatever you put on. I bet you did look at each other in a second look
. I wish I could see a photo of the 3 of you checking each other out. That had to be Too Funny! I hope you are having sweet dreams. Sending Hugs & Kisses From Alabama With Love, Amanda

Zenyatta, too bad they don’t make fly masks for human beings. You horses are way ahead of the curve as far as this one goes. This has to be one of the best things ever invented in history, no matter whether a human or an animal wears it. I feel bad for horses, and all animals for that matter, having flies, bugs, and other of “God’s little creatures” buzzing around their faces without any real way to get rid of them. Too bad you guys can’t just wave them away or use a fly swatter or something like people can, although I sometimes wonder if that’s much better. You look stylish in it. Good luck in keeping those little pests away from you.

Oh, but now I can’t see your beautiful face.
