Happy Saturday Everyone!
It has been a very exciting morning. In Europe, they ran the Epsom Derby today. A horse named CARLTON HOUSE, owned by THE QUEEN of England, was running. This colt was foaled in the United States and was sired by my father, STREET CRY! For these reasons, I was cheering for him. He ran a wonderful race and finished a very accomplished 3rd. I must say, I am enjoying the opportunity to watch the different races around the world now. It is great fun!
Royal Ascot is starting soon. I’m hearing that GOLDIKOVA will be running there. She won her first start of the season…so this will be a race of great interest.
As you know, I have done a great deal of charitable work during my career. My TEAM felt from the very beginning that it was extremely important for ME to be philanthropic and to help others.
At this time, GOLDIKOVA and I are working with the Breeders’ Cup to help raise money for the V FOUNDATION for Cancer Research. I have been doing this for a few years now. What a tremendous cause this is! I truly hope I’m helping to whatever degree possible.
During the last several weeks, Brad Stephenson (in the photo above) worked on a project with MY JOHN to help the ARTS PROGRAMS at Highland Oaks School in Arcadia, CA. (This is the community where Santa Anita is located.) I’m hearing that many of the ARTS programs in quite a few school systems are currently having some difficulties due to budget cuts. It is truly very important for children to be able to participate in and learn about all of these things. Education is so, so incredibly important! Thus, from what I’m hearing, schools are having AUCTIONS to help fund some of these various programs.
The Highland Oaks Designing Dads Auction was a huge success. It was held at Santa Anita. My shoe/photo as pictured above (Brad did a great job framing it) was the highest priced item sold at the entire auction. Andrew and Nana Shen very generously purchased this item.
What a thrill! Everyone at Highland Oaks School is so excited! Fortunately, the children at this school are going to be able to keep their ARTS PROGRAMS for another year due to the success of this auction. The families and members of the community all worked together to make this a success! I am so happy I was able to do MY PART to help!
Recently, one of my halters was auctioned by CANTER. This is an organization I try to work with as often as I can. Their primary goal is to help retired race horses retrain for their 2nd careers. Ali, from Canter, emailed Dottie the other day and said my halter raised $4,600. for their charity. HIGH HOOVES TO EVERYONE at CANTER for this!
Then today, in the Thoroughbred Daily News, they have a piece stating the 8th Annual Night of the Stars, a fundraiser for Central Kentucky Riding for Hope, will be auctioning one of my halters and also a VISIT WITH ME at their June 18th fundraiser. “This organization is a 30-year-old therapeutic riding program based at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington.”
Per the TDN, Pat Kline, on behalf of the organization stated “Zenyatta touched so many people during her racing career and created such excitement for Thoroughbred racing, and now her magic is helping CKRH. We see the healing power of the horse every day at CKRH and are honored to have Zenyatta’s contribution.”
Needless to say, Blush, Blush, I AM THE ONE WHO IS TRULY HONORED TO BE ABLE TO HELP!
Have a wonderful weekend!
With love,
Hugs to All~

@Kathryn Cogswell–Thanks so much for the kind words. My memory gets jogged by the people who post on this site and I am able to respond in kind. However, I am technologically challenged and would not probably be able to do anything else. Believe me, I am happy that persons such as yourself find theses musings enjoyable.

The mention of Lady’s Secret, Secretariat’s most accomplished daughter, reminded us to inquire about the status of a race(s) named for Zenyatta. When Zenyatta’s first retirement was announced in 2009, The Lady’s Secret Stakes at Santa Anita (Oak Tree) was renamed The Zenyatta Stakes. When Zenyatta came out of retirement in 2010 and was preparing to run in the race named for her, the race’s name was changed back to The Lady’s Secret Stakes since no horse had ever run in a race named for him/her. What is the status of a race(s) named for Zenyatta?

Big Mama, wow, I’m sure that you, the Mosses, and the Sheriffs will be up for another award this year to add to your collection…..THE HUMANITARIAN OF THE YEAR AWARD. I say God Bless all of team Z in my prayers every nite.
@Abigail, just loved your vault posting of Terlingua, you are such a great writer.
Luv and kisses on Z’s nose

Ms Z, you and your team continue to give so generously to a myriad of causes. Dottie, thank you for this diary entry – each bit of information on what causes are supported gathers a few more people who can give even small amounts – and the end result is increased support for such worthy- and diverse- organizations as the V Foundation or C A N T E R, or school arts programs. Bless your huge and caring heart! And your wonderful Z family!

Dear Z,
Want to congratulate Mr. Stephenson and Mr. Shen on their winning bids and helping to save Art Programs for children. Love you, Judy and Russ
To Sherry Drish: So glad to hear that Raven is feeling better. Hugs, J.B.
To Mary Bobolis:
How absolutely wonderful it must be to own a halter actually worn by Z, and to know that the money will be used to save horses makes it even better. Hugs, J.B.

@SEN: Ooh, I love the sound of some of the Italian-flavored names you suggested! (No dumplings for me, thank you :-) )
Zenny: The generousity and accessability of all of your Team Z – and YOU – continues to inspire me. All horses deserve second chances, and to live out their lives with dignity. Hummm, I wonder if Zen’s Gift is a taken name?

Hi Queen Z… nice to hear/see about Makoma. Thanks,John! :) @ Everyone: there is another good article by Jay Hovdey in today’s (5th) FORM, about Z’s Mike! He says he continues to sign Zenyatta pictures no matter where he goes. No surprise there! @ Gary Moulton, from a few diaries back: loved, loved Animal Kingdom’s “column” about his Preakness experiences. He should “hijack” more, when he’s not racing of course. :)LOL. @ Abigal from Montreal, enjoyed the reading/viewing of Terlingua. Nice story.
Now I’m looking forward to the Belmont–Z, what do you think? Time to get out that thinking cap! Stay well rested, Ms. Z. So much thanks to you and your TEAM.
Karen
You are the best, Zenyatta. You have such a BIG healing heart and have touched so many lives. Congratulations on all your charity work. I love you. You are so loved by so many.

Dear Anne from Paramount:
How is Rightful Image? Hope he is doing better. Hugs, J.B.

@Sherry Drish: I am so glad Raven is better ! :)
@Janet: I think it’s neat that “Cowboys and Indians” would feature Zenny! Sometimes the ‘horse world’ can be a little insular as far as breeds, riding style, etc.
@Terry Crow: I’ve been watching races from Hollywood Park on Cal Racing. What does it mean when a race is listed as a “handicap”? Thanks!
Rescue At River Edge: Thank you, my Z friends, for caring and being interested!
I talked above to Shari Volz about Rootbeer, so I won’t go into detail except to say he continues to make progress! See above.
Rusty continues to be his delightful, confident self. I picked up his feet yesterday for the first time (not HIS first time) and he was great! His feet seem so little compared to what I’m used to. He is a smallish yearling and not big-boned. Rootbeer watches everything I do with Rusty (to see if it kills him, I think!) and I believe it helps when it is his turn. Rusty still has “baby fuzz” in his mane and tail (cute!)-Rootbeer does not. Anyway, we did more leading work with turns, circles, stops and backing up-more than I do with Rootbeer. Rusty just loves it. I stood next to him with my arm draped over his back and he didn’t think that was too weird! After I was done with them, I noticed Rusty was layed-out on the ground next to their hay roll, sleeping like a baby!
Cheyenne (mother) and baby (I’m calling him “Happy” for Happy Ever After!) are doing well. Happy is just that-and he is exploring the world to the max. I feel for Cheyenne-if she grazes for a moment, he might be off in a flash where she can’t readily see him and she gets so worried! But, fortunately, he takes a lot of naps :) I mentioned in another post that I am not helping with their website after all, but I will see if I can get some new pictures posted of everyone. I am going to be doing a quarterly newsletter for the rescue (never done THAT before!) and I think it will be posted on-line, too.
I mentioned to Sharon Call above that Chester did like the sweet potato with a little molasses in it, so YAY! There is actually only one horse who actually bites him when Chester goes by and I did see bite marks on him yesterday (no skin-breaks). It’s mostly a hierchy thing- Chester is new and even though he is not actually in with the others, they want him to know the ropes. The others don’t bite-they recognize that Chester is old and not strong at this time. I am concerned about him, though. It may just be the heat, but he seems a little droopy. I have to remember he is still recovering from near starvation and that includes building back muscle. He still sidles up to me,very quietly, when I get there. He doesn’t ask for attention but it’s clear he wants it and is like,”Here I am,if you wanted to pet me or anything.” It’s kind of heart-wrenching. I brushed him and scratched him in some good “itchy” spots and he seemed to really enjoy that. I think a companion would really help his spirits. Doesn’t have to be a horse! You all can probably imagine how much I want to take him to our house and just pamper him,but it wouldn’t be much better for him because our three are very settled in their little herd and,as sweet as they are,I don’t think they would welcome him in-they have been together for fourteen years (two since birth).Overall,Chester is okay and I will keep you posted-especially you, Sharon! I told him about you, that he had a special friend out there who cared about HIM and wants him to be happy!
This is so long but I assume whoever is not interested will just skip over it!
Warm wishes to all!

Z Fans and Uncle Mo Fans:
Here is an article on Mo’s illness..http://www.drf.com/news/uncle-mos-illness-diagnosed Apparently it’s rare. Hugs, J.B.

To Susan in Tn.:
Loved your updates on everybody. Sounds like you are really making progress with Root Beer. Chester is precious, and you have a knack for explaining all of their personalities. So glad “Happy” and his Mom are doing great. Hugs to all of you, J.B.

@Abigail, Thank you so much for the article on Terlingua, I had seen some of it before but it was so nice to see it again this Sunday afternoon. Just sitting here crying as I watch that video again. She was such a wonderful and Beautiful girl. Its been kind of a sad day for me, I am Methodist by Faith and we lost our pastor today. Methodist sometimes change there pasters around. Ours didn’t go far away only about 22 miles, but we will miss him. Losing people and animals its hard but I know we have to look at the bigger picture and move on. Everyone have a wonderful day. Zenny love you very much have a wonderful day.
Peggy (N)
@Judy Berube, Thank you also for the link to Uncle Mo’s condition. I am continually praying for him. Thanks again

@sherry drish–God be praised for Raven’s good report! Your update literally made my day!
@Susan in TN–please assure Chester he has MANY friends who care about him here in Zenyattaland. We love your reports and look forward to hearing about all the “gang”. I especially loved the quote, “Here I am if you want to pet me or anything.” TOO CUTE!

@Ensign!
You said Lady’s Secret! I loved her. An amazing athlete. She was voted Horse of the Year in 1986. Thank you for thinking of her.

Where are your “sockpuppets”?
You have provided quite a lot of fictitious information on this site. And folks need to wake up!!!!!
How is Canter spelled???? Who really cares!!! Those who run this site are far better more accomplished people that you will ever be.
Making editorial corrections on the diary posts only reflects arrogance, insecurity and self-centeredness.

Seems like maybe there has only been three HOY that were female. I don’t know some of the older horses names and
sexes so there may be one or two more. Since the last two
have been female and a possible third one (never know though),
what has happened the strengthen the muscle and bone structure of the female lines? Have the sires passed these characteristics through their dams to the filly’s or maybe just a change in raceing length or other enviornmental things?
You have such a flare for discussing a pedigree form all angles with a very integrated flare so all aspects are address. Your blogs are very intellectual, emotional and historical. So glad you started The Vault. Thanks so much Zenny.

Hello my sweet Zenny. You and your team are so awesome. Not only are you the most beautiful, wonderful horse there is, but you do this all of this incredible charity work on top of it. You all could not be any more perfect if you tried. You all are truly an inspiration. Loving you in Lexington :-)
Anne from Paramount, CA
@judy berube, no update on Rightful Image at this writing, thanks for asking! He seemed in fine spirits last week, so we’ll see. As our Z would say, hooves crossed!
Janet Cutting
Zenyatta Moss- you are just a classy girl who always reminds us that it is better to give than receive. Life is good if you can help make it better for others. Thanks for always caring and showing it!!! Thinking pink for: Rebelations or Goldenheart in Stride .

Goldikova & Frankel are both in races during the Royal Ascot meet. I read that TVG would carry the races live, but for those of us that don’t have TVG try this link. All UK races are shown about 10 minutes after end of race. More Than Real is shipping over to England for an Ascot race, and don’t forget our Mikey will be riding there too. More Than Real is a More Than Ready filly. More Than Ready is an incredible looking stallion, do chk the photos on his face book page, you will not be disappointed, he is magnificent. But don’t worry Zenny, you got the most handsome stalion of all, your Bernie is as handsome as they come. http://www1.skysports.com/racing/video-form#

Frankel’s race is on June 14, not sure what date Goldies is, but
HRTV will cover too.
Thanks J Smith for update on Mikey.. I have to get that jockey calendar. I is soooo awesome. Barbara Livingston did such a great job.

Hi, Zenny: Just back from a six-day tour of Chicago and Springfield, Ill. Had a great time, but missed being able to read your daily posts while gone. Was disturbed to see that one of the museums I visited that had a “horse” section, failed to feature you–not a book or even a comment on my beloved Zenyatta. We have to do something about that. Much love, S
Arlene
Hi Zenyatta, Wow, what a post! Your participation in all these charities is wonderful. Real nice picture.
A thought for a name for your foal – Care of Zenber
I thought I’d share with you and those interested in the eagles in Iowa what I saw last night. The “little” eagles look to be as big as their Mom and Dad. Last night one of them was agitated over something – maybe it was hungry. It was spreading its wings walking back and forth chirping away, looking around. Another one was calmly sitting occasionally looking at the other like it was saying “What’s wrong”. At first I didn’t see any signs of the third one, but then I think I saw its feathers in the corner of my computer screen. After a while the calm eagle layed down, while the other one kept carrying on. Finally the agitated one calmed down and layed down beside the other one, which lovingly put its wing over it as if to say “Everything is all right”. All you loving creatures bring such warmth in this world!
