Good Morning,
It sounds like all of you are having an interesting time thinking of BABY NAMES! It is a great deal of fun trying to come up with the ‘perfect’ name that ‘appears available’. Needless to say, Sophie’s suggestion, was just that, a thought. There are so many fun possibilities and options for one to contemplate. Using the Jockey Club Interactive page is definitely very helpful.
So many of you kindly wrote and asked about Makoma. My dear friend is doing fine! John just took this photo of her a few moments ago so I could share it with you. As you can see, she is A-OK! John also did a little video for you of Makoma so you could see her walking around the grazing area at Barn 55.
Horses are like people. Once in awhile, they can have something in their life not go right at that particular moment. For Makoma, it was her race yesterday. As an athlete, something can happen at the drop of a hat. So, we are all grateful that she just had a ‘bad day’ for whatever reason….and that she came out of the experience in good shape!
Many times in life, it is something like this that makes you appreciate how wonderful it is to have your health! Good health is so very important!
Again, thank you for thinking of my dear friend and asking about her! Makoma sends all of you a BIG HUG!
With Love,
Hugs to All~

With the passing last Friday of the iconic character actor James Arness http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/04/arts/television/james-arness-marshal-on-gunsmoke-dies-at-88.html — five decades before a camera somewhere, but most notably as his own 6’7″ alter ego, Marshal Matt Dillon, the Dodge lawman who, for 20 years, brought more grown-up reality to the Western genre than any other, it finally is clearer why John Shirreffs seemed celebrated before his impact really made known his own fine traits: John is just like Jim Arness; and a lot like Marshal Dillon — quiet men cut from the same cloth. Only notable difference: the Marshal wasn’t particularly fond of the big horse cast for him to ride all those trails . .. it was just that they fit each other.

I think a good name would be “Yatta Yatta Yatta” :) Love you Zennie!!! <3

@Judy Berube–Breeding is always a sensitive issue. But, the fact remains that race tracks are disappearing because the horse population has decreased. The match race between horses ridden by Mike Smith and Chantal Sutherland will be held at Del Mar on August 7. Should be extra interesting considering the disqualification at Hollywood park last Monday.
Max
@judy berube Thanks very much for the link to the Epsom Derby.
Pour Moi ran strongly like Zenyatta to come from dead last to win yet another great victory for the Northern Dancer line.

I like names that tell us who are the parents. Bet these aren’t taken: Zenadini- colt; Bernyatta – filly (so the track announcer can lengthen it out Bern-Yaaaah-ta or Zen-deee-nee). :-)

@Kathryn Cogswell–I belong to a wild west discussion group here in southern California and James Arness came to one of our meetings to discuss his career. When he asked the audience to name their favorite Arness film or role I said “Them.” He laughed for about five minutes. It was startling to see how big he was, although he had lost a bit of weight by then. A wonderful man with a great sense of humor. His brother, Peter Graves, was also there and hardly anybody recognized him. I had him to myself for quite some time and really got the lowdown on the actors in Mission: Impossible. I thought it was strange that his brother had never been a guest star on the show. He said it always had been planned but time ran out.

Glad to hear she is doing well! I love how you can share your posts with all of your other friends and keep us so up to date! I am also enjoying everyone’s ideas for foal names….as you said lots of choices
BIGS HUGS and KISSES to you!!!!!

Queen Z…thanks for the information about Makoma. I always admired the condition and hair coat of D. Wayne Lucas horses, but he has nothing on your John, he puts beautiful coats on all his runners. Makoma just shines like a new penny. Of course, the beautiful dapples were a part of our Zenny.

To Max:
Your welcome. What a wonderful legacy Northern Dancer has left to the Sport of Kings. His line just goes on and on. Hugs, J.B.
To Terry Crow:
I know. Will not bring it up again. The Match race should be very interesting. Hugs, J.B.
Terry Crow
@Judy Berube.Bring it up ll that you want. It certainly is a question for the times. Its just that there is no easy answer. Its a darned if you do and darned if you don’t type of situation. If you have access to Cal Racing, check out the feature race at Hollywood Park, the Los Angeles Handicap, last Monday. Should add to the atmosphere around the match race. Of course, the horses will have a lot to do with it.
Terry Crow
@Judy Berube–That should have read bring it up all that you want.
judy berube
To Terry Crow:
Thanks. I’ll check that race out right now. Hugs, J.B.

To Terry Crow:
Wow, I see what you mean. That’s something I have not seen happen in a long, long time. Looked like a race from the 1920’s at a fairgrounds. The Match race should be interesting, indeed. Hugs, J.B.

Glad to hear your friend, Makoma is o.k.! It’s always fun naming the baby! I love you, Z! Take care of yourself and your little bundle of joy!! God bless….

all right, guys and gals….there’s a wonderful saying on the brass plate on top of the Washington Monument that says what our country stands for and should do. It’s LAUS DEO and a perfect name for a foal who will be a glorious race horse. Translated from the Latin: “Praise Be To God”. I think it’s something we all have done when we speak of Zenyatta, her connections, her career…and her future. It would SO fit a foal of hers’. And it’s a name that would be completely its’ own, not part of someone elses’… as “Zenyatta” is also just her own. What do you think?
Helen (Michigan)
Zenny, love all the “baby names”! Haven’t thought of one yet and probably couldn’t come close to anything as original as the ones posted by your plethora of fans.
So glad Nakoma is doing well. I didn’t catch the race. (I’m on EDT and forgot the post time).
I too miss Mike aboard your pals back at Barn 55. Hope the day comes again when he will fly down the track in the Moss’ silks.
Hugs right back to you and all your team as well.
Barbara Wood
@PeggyOne–I couldn’t agree with you more. We have all said she is a gift from God. What a lovely name, and it would fit either a colt or a filly.
I, for one, am not fond of the catchy names, and that’s why I haven’t weighed in on the naming game. My favorite names are names like Better Than Honour, Sunshine Forever, etc. I really hope someone checks out Laus Deo. Says it all.
Brenda
Sadly, for the Queen, Carlton House came in third in the English Derby so no winner for Her Majesty.

To Dawn Conrad: Wishing you the best. We haven’t heard from you in awhile. I hope all is well with you.

Hi sweet mama; I just became emotional watching a link of the great Secretariat that Kari Brussel had sent. Secretariat was above any!!! The comments made from sports writers for various big magazines, reminded me of how the world has felt about you!! We are so so blessed to be a part of you. Mrs. Chenery was the icing on the cake, to honor you!! But, you ran like no other for 19 races and finished by a nose in twenty!! You remained healthy, uninjured and when you came to the track, ready to run!!. I honor him and I honor Zenyatta; the greatest race horse mare in a lifetime, especially mine and I am in the 60’s!! Just another note as waiting for another post! I absolutely love the name for your foal “Mama Can Dance”. That is awesome.
Love with a kiss on your soft nose!!
@Kari Bussell, thankyou for the link; awesome. I always get so chocked up with these videos!!
@Jack W. Congrats!!! and thanks for the great post
@Especially Horses, You have some great memories. How about ” Mama Z’s Dickens”?

Abigail from Montreal
Hi my sweet Zenny.
It was a spectacular day in Montreal today, filled with sunshine and a pesky little breeze that reminded us all that we’re not quite into shorts weather yet!!! Thank you, so much, John & Dottie for the news about Makoma and the video. I always worry when a horse is pulled up and it was wonderful to know that Makoma is fine, but was having a “bad day” — just like our Canadiens hockey team and so many other athletes!
I have a special surprise for ALL my friends here at Zenyatta.com. THE VAULT’s latest article is dedicated to ALL of you! And Zenny: it’s a story of another “California Girl” who stole the hearts of racing fans, including mine. The idea came to me as I read everyone’s daily postings and delighted in them.

@AMANDA IN NH from #262—I went to your horse Evaire Lady Guinevere’s facebook page, and was very impressed. I’m so glad she is having fun with you now and is “learning to jump over stuff,” as she puts it. She is very beautiful and expresses herself very well also. I hope you’ll keep us in touch on this site too. Best wishes to you and Evaire Lady Guinevere (formerly Bebe Ani, racehorse and broodmare).
@Lauren – Thanks for the link tracing Z’s pedigree on #262.
@Doreen—Thanks for the research on A and M songs.
@Especially Horses—I never read The Secret Garden, but I will now that you have introduced me to it. Dickon’s rapport with all the animals and the pony Jump in particular sounds perfectly enchanting. Thanks for your post.
@Susan in TN—Looking forward to reading this weekend’s installment of Rescue at River Edge. I’m so glad two horses found forever homes, and I’m hoping more adopters will come forward this week.
@Kari Bussell—I so enjoyed the Secretariat link. Thank you!
Yvonne and Maurice Kirby
Hi Zenyatta. Thank you, Dotty and John so much for the update on Makoma. Unfortuately, because of my old computer, I am unable to see the video but I can hear John talking. Prayers were answered by Saint Francis. I also would like to ask everyone to pray for Uncle Mo. He is such a special champion and what a heartbreak it was that he was unable to run in the Kentucky Derby. I have my Uncle Mo hat on display and t-shirts to wear when he returns to racing. I know Uncle Mike will not let him come back to racing if he is not 100 percent. Dotty is so right, health is everything! Zenyatta, just love all of the names being suggested for your baby. Stay gorgeous, eat well, enjoy the summerlike weather and have loads of fun grazing and being with your friends. Love you, Angel in Disguise.

To Abigail from Montreal:
Wonderful piece on Terlingua. Thanks. Hugs,J.B.
Barbara Wood
@Abigail–thank you for the article on Terlingua. I have the copy of “More Old Friends” and paid a fortune for a used copy of the original “Old Friends”. They are hard to come by. My copy had been in a library in Colorado. It’s the most I’ve ever paid for a book, but I go back to it again and again.

@ Kari B. – What a sweetheart you are! (As most posters here are, I must say!) You with your enormous heartfelt love for “our” Zenny, just shines thru with such passion everytime you post – thank you for all your precious photos and loving videos you post here and on her FB page. How uplifting and inspiring they (and you) are! In my eyes, you are right up there with Dottie, you both inspire so many. You will always be locked in my heart. Can’t get enough of that passion, don’t ever give up, don’t ever stop – please! Prayers and love to you and yours. To you always in Zennyland of heaven in your dreams! Karen Gogue Long Beach
Max
@Abigail from Montreal. That was a good article on Terlingua. Not only was she a very good race horse, she was also a great broodmare. She was mother to Storm Cat. I recently saw a video about him where the handler talked about her as a very spirited horse even into old age. Thanks again for the article.

Hi Zenyatta it was a beautiful sunny day today. I hope you had a lot of outside time. I thought about you this morning while running. You help me pass the time. Well sweet girl enjoy the rest of your evening and pleasant dreams. I love you and send many Hugs and Kisses, Shari XXXOOO
@ Kari thank you for the kind words :)
@ Susan in Tn I would like to send a small donation for you to buy something special for Rootbeer. A special horse treat. Is that possible? If so can you tell me where to send the money and who to make it out for? I would put on the envelope in care of Susan for Rootbeer :)
