Good Morning,
It sounds like all of you are having an interesting time thinking of BABY NAMES! It is a great deal of fun trying to come up with the ‘perfect’ name that ‘appears available’. Needless to say, Sophie’s suggestion, was just that, a thought. There are so many fun possibilities and options for one to contemplate. Using the Jockey Club Interactive page is definitely very helpful.
So many of you kindly wrote and asked about Makoma. My dear friend is doing fine! John just took this photo of her a few moments ago so I could share it with you. As you can see, she is A-OK! John also did a little video for you of Makoma so you could see her walking around the grazing area at Barn 55.
Horses are like people. Once in awhile, they can have something in their life not go right at that particular moment. For Makoma, it was her race yesterday. As an athlete, something can happen at the drop of a hat. So, we are all grateful that she just had a ‘bad day’ for whatever reason….and that she came out of the experience in good shape!
Many times in life, it is something like this that makes you appreciate how wonderful it is to have your health! Good health is so very important!
Again, thank you for thinking of my dear friend and asking about her! Makoma sends all of you a BIG HUG!
With Love,
Hugs to All~

WILD HORSES
Thank you so much for the update on Makoma. I only got to see the Hollywood replay show late last night and was very worried. I was going to ask how she was in my post, but thank you for being so forthcoming. I never like to see that.
I have noticed though that Mike isn’t riding too many horses for John anymore. They have done such great things together in the past. Not just with you Big Z, but also with Giacomo, Tiago, Neko Bay and many more. It makes me a little sad when I see other riders on John’s hoses, especially if they are owned by the Moss’, but I guess life moves on in many different directions. I wish them all luck and hope there has not been a fall out. I think Mike is a very caring and sensitive rider when it comes to his mounts. He is very admirable in my eyes! I wish him alot of luck at Royal Ascot. Hope you have a great weekend Big Beautiful One. Lori

When I saw that Makoma “didn’t finish” her race yesterday, I watched the replay at BH then came straight here. Felt sure there would be some comments. It’s a huge relief to read she’s ok. Thank you, Zen & Dottie & John for the update & video!

Thanks for the video of Makoma! I told my second graders that you are in foal. We are all so excited for all of you. I thought of something fast and Formula Zen came to my mind, but I am sure the Music Man will have the perfect name!
Especially Horses
I need to add my two cents for a name. I’ve always wanted to name a racehorse Dickon’s Creature. When my sister and I were very young my mother read to us Frances Hodgson Burnett’s children’s classic The Secret Garden. The main characters are Mary Lennox, Colin and Dickon. Dickon is quite an unusual fellow. He possesses the ability to talk to animals and is able to grow anything with a little bit of soil. Shortly after being introduced to the character Dickon, whenever my sister and I saw a particularly cute or enduring animal we would say, “that’s a Dickon’s Creature”. Many years have passed since our childhood but to this day upon seeing a too cute animal you will hear us proclaim, “Ah, that’s a Dickon’s Creature, to be sure”.
I have no doubt that when I see the first photo of Zenny’s baby I will say, “Too cute, that’s a Dickon’s Creature, to be sure”.

Some of my favorite excerpts from The Secret Garden:
She catches her breath as she sees a boy sitting against a tree. A brown squirrel clings to the tree beside him, with a pheasant and two rabbits watching him nearby. Even before he introduces himself, Mary knows this is Dickon.
When she gets to the garden door, she sees a crow sitting right there on the wall. She enters the garden as the crow flies to an apple tree, beneath which Dickon is already at work with a little red fox beside him. Mary is so happy to see him she can barely catch her breath. He introduces her to “Scoot,” the crow, and “Captain,” the fox.
Dickon is there when Mary arrives, with his pony and two tame squirrels in his pockets, Nut and Shell.
There was so much to talk about. It seemed as if Colin could never hear enough of Dickon and Captain and Soot and Nut and Shell and the pony whose name was Jump. Mary had run round into the wood with Dickon to see Jump. He was a tiny little shaggy moor pony with thick locks hanging over his eyes and with a pretty face and a nuzzling velvet nose. He was rather thin with living on moor grass but he was as tough and wiry as if the muscle in his little legs had been made of steel springs. He had lifted his head and whinnied softly the moment he saw Dickon and he had trotted up to him and put his head across his shoulder and then Dickon had talked into his ear and Jump had talked back in odd little whinnies and puffs and snorts. Dickon had made him give Mary his small front hoof and kiss her on her cheek with his velvet muzzle.
“Does he really understand everything Dickon says?” Colin asked.
“It seems as if he does,” answered Mary. “Dickon says anything will understand if you’re friends with it for sure, but you have to be friends for sure.”
“Can I trust you? I trusted Dickon because birds trusted him. Can I trust you–for sure–for sure?” she implored. Dickon will come to see you tomorrow morning, and he’ll bring his creatures with him.”

Zenny my second graders refer to your baby as “Baby Z”

Yay Makoma! You had everyone scared. We’ve gotten to know you and love you. It was good to see you out walking. You seemed to not have a care in the world. And how beautiful you are. Thank you to John and Barn 55 for all the love and tenderness they give you. That can make bad days go away faster.
.
Hi Zenny!!! Thank you for all the great information on naming a horse. Every name I’ve thought of has already been taken. But I am going to keep trying. It’s fun. “My Dumpling” does sound pretty cute. Keep enjoying your Kentucky summer. You look so content there. I would be too actually. Maybe I could have a job mowing the grass. Love you and always thinking of you. ~ Dani

Thank you Zenny, Dottie and John for giving us an update on Makoma.I kept her in my prayers last evening am I’m thrilled that she is doing well. Many times we don’t receive updates on horses that have difficulties during races so I appreciate you taking the time to let us know Makoma will be fine.
Susan, San Jose CA
Yes, we should never take our health for granite. When I hurt my back last summer and almost could not get on the plane to see you last summer and John allowed me to see you, it was a miracle that I could walk as I did! Just seeing you made the pain go away and be in place of utmost joy and awe! Something I will always remember is when you came you to me and I stroked the side of you nose! It was like I was in a dream. Thanks John!

@Jack W—Great post about your horse who never gave up and got to the winner’s circle at Suffolk. I love how you stuck with him through thick and thin and wore your ”Simply the Best” shirt that you made in Z’s honor. Congratulations to him and to you. Thanks for sharing. Good luck to you and your horses in the future.
@Susan in TN—HAPPY BIRTHDAY! And many returns!
@Sherry Drish—I’m so sorry Raven isn’t feeling well. I hope he’ll soon be “eating like a horse” again. Keep us posted. We’ll pray for him.
@Doreen—-Thanks for link on Mike Smith’s life nowadays.
@All the injured survivors of the horse barn fire—Thanks for your courageous efforts to save all the horses you could at risk to your own lives. Our well wishes go out to you, and prayers for your recovery. Condolences to all who lost horses.
@Susan in San Jose–Love that! Yes, Jerry Moss is the Music Man!

With the Belmont upon us I feel it is very approriate to take a moment to honor & remember The Great Secretariat and his awesome Belmont…Penny Chenery did bestow a huge honor on our beloved Queen…For you who are too young to remember first hand…This is much better than the movie…Includs comments by Penny Chenery, William Nack, Ron T…and of course the race…I will put a link to the entire Belmont with extended footage after this….
Also if I may be so bold as to suggest that Z-fans go to Chantal Sutherland’s official FB page and like it if you haven’t already, then leave her a comment thanking her for doing the right thing for Makoma…The sport needs more like her..

That’s one of the major reasons we all love Team Z–compassion for others, whether people or horses–Team Z is heart. And you’re right, dear Zenny–health is everything. I hope all will go well with Makoma from this moment forward.
Love you, Zenyatta!!!

Hi Zenny: Thanks so much for the update on Makoma. After I read that she had to be vaned off, I tried to find some news online about her. I didn’t come across anything, so I considered that to be good news. Thanks John for posting the video. That was so very considerate of you. Makoma is a beauty! I wonder if she will race in the Clement Hirsch race at the Del Mar? I was there last summer when you won, Zenny. I would love to return again this year. Maybe you could ask John and Dottie what races they are thinking of pointing some of their horses to.
@ Doreen–Thanks for the link to the article on Mike Smith. I read that Mike wanted to see if Zenny remembered him. Zenny is a very smart horse. Zenny the next time you see Mike, be sure to tell him that you will never forget your CA family.

Happy Friday Zen, hope you and all the girls (mamas) have a wonderful weekend.
So glad Makoma is ok and Chantal is an experienced jockey and knew what to do.
@Jack W–Congratulations on your win and both of you and your horse’s courageous constitution. What’s his name, if you don’t mind, so we can follow his progress?
@Sherry Drish–praying for your Raven.
Also thinking and praying for every one and every creature that isn’t 100% at this time. So glad Uncle Mo was diagnosed and wishing him and Mike Repole the best.
Here’s to a great weekend and lotsa love to all.

To Jack W.,
Great story about your horse. He has a lot of heart, just like Z. Hugs, J.B.

Dear Zenny, Dottie and John
Thanks so much for your thoughtfulness in
Making that video of Makoma. She is one very
Beautiful Filly. Zenny said it best ” horses are
Like people” and are very individual with delicate
Emotions and bodies. They have good days and bad
Days. Zenny you very mature beyond your very
Young years. To never race to the fullest and only
Do what you needed to to win. That is a veteran
Quality. The veterans know how much the have to
Expend and that is all the use. They save the rest
for other things. Sometimes things happen Barbaro
Took a bad step, you got a bunch of dirt in your
Face at the beginning of BCC 2010 and were stumbling
Because you could not see, Mike let you work it through
And you almost won. All horses are very special individuals.
I always wondered why the President of Darley
Called Bernardini an individual. Now I Know.
Sweet dreams XXXOOO
Shema
Thanks Kari for the reminder of the great Secretariat’s Belmont run. Still makes me cry.
Dear Z, you are in the best of company with Secretariat. You both are larger than life and we are so fortunate to be blessed with you.
