Good Morning,
I have received so many FUN messages lately. You are all TOO CUTE! Needless to say, my Barn 55 Friends do keep in touch with ME and all that is going on in my life at the farm. David constantly updates Dottie and John on everything that I am doing. All of the messages are passed along to my dear California family and friends. I often TANGO with them as well. Ann and I do this quite often. I know they miss ME…but we really do keep in very close contact.
I have to say, my dear pal, SOPHIE SHIRREFFS, sent me the cutest message this morning. Firstly, she wanted ME to know that “OUR JOHN” had a fabulous birthday and he truly wants to THANK EACH OF YOU for the kind wishes. She also sent ME a big YIPPEE on my IN FOAL STATUS! She is EXCITED and said all of my BARN 55 friends are absolutely ELATED!
Sophie then added that she heard there is a contest taking place on-line having people suggest a name for my foal. Well, she thinks the name DUMPLING would be TOO CUTE if my foal is a filly. The reason for this is a very inside story.
It is my understanding that often in human families there is a sweet ‘pet name’ or term of endearment that is used when referring to family members and/or loved ones. Well, in our family, Dottie has always used the term “THE DUMPLINGS” to lovingly refer to the MOSS HORSES. As a collective group, we horses have been and are extremely creative both on and off the race track. Not only are we in training athletes at different stages of our careers, but we also send cards, gifts, letters, and messages all of the time. Then when sending notes and updates to our owners about us, Dottie often comments that THE DUMPLINGS are doing this or that. It is truly a loving way in which she has always addressed US!
Thus, that is why SOPHIE suggested DUMPLING as one possible name to be considered.
As you know, the Jockey Club does have very specific rules about naming a horse. The name has to “BE AVAILABLE”. It can’t be in current use or the name of a current producing mare or stallion. Some names are PERMANENTLY removed from consideration as they belong to a very prominent and ‘historical’ horse. I’m proud to say, my name, ZENYATTA, is now in this classification. It will not be able to be used again for another horse. SECRETARIAT’s name is also historical and it falls into this same category. The names of Kentucky Derby Winners are also viewed in this way…and may not be used again. It is truly an honor to be respected on such a level.
Other things may also prevent a name from being accepted. If it is too similar to a current name or if it is ‘reserved’ by an owner to be used in the future, it will be considered as NOT available.
When submitting a name to the Jockey Club for a horse, you may use up to 18 letters…including spaces. You may not use someone’s specific name without their written permission. All names must also ‘appear available’ through the Interactive Naming Program and ultimately be approved by the Jockey Club before officially being accepted for a particular horse.
As a result, it is truly NOT an easy task to name a horse. So many wonderful names are already taken. When you consider that over 30,000 thoroughbreds are born each year in our country…finding that one special or unique name can be a ‘fun’ challenge.
The Jockey Club has a web-site. If you go to it, THE JOCKEY CLUB, and then click on INTERACTIVE REGISTRY, you will see a screen that has several options. Please click on ONLINE NAMES BOOK and try a few of your choices. Have some fun with it and get creative! You’ll see, getting the name you really love is not always easy!
Hmmm….DUMPLING! Dottie just tried it and per the Jockey Club Progam…it is already in use. A 2010 horse has the name. Next, we tried ‘The Dumpling’…not happening. Getting a bit more creative, we tried ‘MY DUMPLING’…and YIPPEE…it appears available! Options, options! Names are just one more fun thing for ME to contemplate!
Good Thinking, Sophie!
With love,
Hugs to All~

What an adorable picture of Sophie!! She really is just too cute! It is wonderful to hear that your John had a great birthday – I am so happy for that. Way, way back when I was a teenager my mom and her husband at the time had a racing Quarter Horse that we called Dumpling! Her registered name was Craig’s Pistol or something boring like that, but to the family she was Dumpling, so I like that name – lol! Whatever name is chosen for your foal it will be beautiful, poetic and perfect – I know it! Thank you for sharing all of this great news with us. You have once again started my day with a happy post! Thank you!

Zenny, this is a lot to think about. It’s a good thing there’s a little time before you have to make a final decision. So many possibilities, such a process, research and all. Have a wonderful day My Sunshine! Updates are wonderful. Thank you, thank you, thank you. And a big High Hoof to you Miss Sophie. :)

@Astrid–love your poem!
@Sophie–could there be a doggie with a higher adorability factor? You come close to ours! (But they are big dogs, and therefore different).
@Dottie–love the inside story about the Dumplings. And again, thanks for making us all part of the family. We really SHOULD have a convention!
ANyone heard from Dawn Conrad??

@Kari Bussel-Love your names. Keep them coming. My brother & I also thought of Heir to the Throne, but the name was taken. Going along that same line of thinking, our Queen Z’s colt could be named
My Kingdom Calls.
Liked the sound of it. For a filly, Princess Z is simple and elegant.

Random observations on name that have been suggested:
–
“Mondatta” is taken. The Mosses already have a horse by that name. “Synchronicity” is also in use.
–
“Zensational” is the name of a very good, multiple G1-winning stallion now standing at stud at Hill ‘n Dale.
–
@Cheryl, “His Majesty” is permanently reserved. He was the leading sire of 1982, a son of the great sire Ribot out of Flower Bowl, and the full brother of Graustark. He stood at Darby Dan. “Her Majesty” is in use.

BernUpZtrack—LOVE IT!!!

Although I like “Zingular Zensation” and “Sweet Zensation,” I don’t think they’d be approved. They are too close to Singular Sensation and Sweet Sensation, both in use.
—
@Lynn, “Danc’n in the Street” is too long—how about Dancin inZstreet?
—
@Abigail and @Kari, I like your sugggestions.
—
@Sharon Call, “Driven to Tears” was the winning entry in the contest conducted by the Thoroughbred Times. It’s available. Maybe you are thinking of Wasted Tears? She just won the G3 Ouija Board Distaff at Lone Star. She’s a 6-year-old daughter of Najran.
—
@Margaret, OF does a lot of auctions. They are usually publicized on their Facebook page. They’ve had some nice jewelry lately. Thanks for reminding people to check out any charity.

By the way, although it seems as though every name possible must already be in use, it’s not true. Most names come back into circulation eventually. In fact, the Jockey Club publishes a list of thousands of recently released names every year. And people are still coming up with original names.

Zen Guardian
First For Zen
Prince of Zen or Princess Zen

I looked up my suggestion of “A Simple Gift” for the foal’s name and it is available. It’s very straightforward: it’s a gift to the world from Zenyatta!!! I think it’s perfect. I hope Team Zenyatta agrees! We will see.
Ida Lee
I like Zenadini as someone mentioned above. I also like Zingular Zenzation. Oh I almost forgot…love you My Queen!!!!

I’m sure whatever name is chosen will be perfect for the foal!!! Zenyatta is a creative, unusual, and beautiful name for our girl. So wonderful to be a part of the pregnancy process. Thank you!!!

Zenyatta – THE ONE AND ONLY! You DEFINITELY deserve a place in history. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE you. Kisses and hugs to you and your growing baby…

Good morning! It is so much fun reading everyone’s name ideas-very creative! What a joyous event this is!
@Eveline and Laura J: Best of luck to your horses later today! Eveline-love “Animal”!
@Kari B: Wow-you are so creative to come up with so many names! YOU do our state proud :)
@suew: That’s quite a coincidence-sharing bdays and “dumpling”!
@Amy K: Well-thought out name!
@Trina N: How fun to be there in person to see John saddle Nereid! Congrats to him and hoping Makoma is okay.
@Dona:You are indeed very creative in discussing Zenyatta without a “z”-so funny!
@Karen Gogue: I really enjoyed your story and laughed at the “human dumplings”!
@Mike: Funny!
@DJ: Hadn’t thought about Guinness until your idea. “ForGuinnessSake”?
@Amanda G: I hope you can get horses back in your life,too. How is Kathy? You and your family are in my prayers.
@Sue Noel: Thank you so much for thinking of River Edge and Root Beer!! I know there are so many in need out there and everyone probably has their own causes they would like to support,but I can vouch for River Edge. And for people on this site to care about Root Beer, Chester, Rusty and Cheyenne and her colt brings tears to my eyes! You are right-we really can make a difference by donating to horse rescues in Z’s name or her tiny dancer-no matter what rescue or how much money. I used to not donate to causes because I didn’t have a lot to give,but now I give $5.00 to various groups because I finally realized that every bit DOES help!
@Terry Crow and Judy Berube: So I’ve been thinking Nehro is a really strong contender in the Belmont but I don’t know much about Master of the Hounds -what can you tell me? Thanks!
P.S.I left messages toward the end of the last post-probably have already been seen by now.

‘Joie de Vive’ in ‘myrna miller’s’ note above struck a note w/ me. ?? There are ‘No Matches,’ to it, but ‘Joie de Vivre’ (2008) too close, maybe.

Someone suggested Hard Act To Follow as a name for baby bump – Perfect!!!!

Hey Zenny! I’m not sure how many of these comments you read (you’re a busy girl!), but I wanted to say congrats on your pregnancy! Your cousin, Evaire and I are so excited for you! Speaking of Evaire, would you mind asking the Mosses if they remember their horse, Bebe Ani (Br.f., 91 Stop The Music – Delicate Vine)? Tell them to shoot me an email if they do! She looks so much like you, and was born in KY as well. She’s such a sweet horse, and tries so hard for everything we ask her to do, so I KNOW she is your cousin! I linked to her Facebook account (Evaire Lady Guinevere), so if a close friend of yours wants to add her, they can feel free! After she finished racing for the Mosses, she was a broodmare just like you are now. She wants to wish you lots of luck with your baby, prayers it is a healthy foal! We also wanted to suggest Zendini as a name. ;) Okay, hope you have a great day of grazing!

Hi Zenny!
I love the name, Dumpling. That is super cute! Looking forward to more adventures of Zenny and the Dumpling. Kind of sounds like a children’s book. What do you think? :)
Shannon From Cool
Good because there is only ONE ZENYATTA and it’s YOU. No other horse will ever match your stature and personality.
Molly
Zenyatta, no matter what we call your filly or colt, I know it will be a gorgeous horse and we will all simply love this animal. That said, I do like “kisstheboysgoodbye”, “Z’s Dumpling” or maybe the name of a dance (Zen’s Zamba). Keep healthy and happy.
Annie K
Ooh! Great ideas!
Zensational
Zomthing Special
Easy on the Eyes
I think any one of these would be perfect for your baby! Whatever you decide, it has to really be ‘zomthing special’ (haha)

Hi all! According to this article that I found at calracing.com, Makoma had no apparent injuries and was pulled up because Chantal didn’t like the way she was traveling. I hope that is still the case and that she is okay. Zenny, if you hear anything, please let us know. Thanks!

Dottie, have Ann and Jerry already reserved selected names for Zenyatta’s offspring? I do like “Wink Wink” or “Dumpling” for a barn name. But seems that this horse will need a very regal or sassy name. I would love to hear John’s ideas on the matter.

THE QUEEN’S foal requires a regal name.

Please give us an update on Makoma’s condition.

A ” dumpling” it is! What fun!

@ Love all your name suggestions!! Personally, I like “Vitesse” (french). My favourite all time horse names are: Zenyatta (of course!), Whirlaway, Sea Hero and Seabiscuit. The Howards called his offspring little Biscuits which is too cute. I am sure I forgot to add some names:)

@ Doreen – thanks for the update on Paddy!
@ Leslie – thanks for your link. Hope Makoma is O.k.!!
@Zenny, wishing you and your dumpling-friends a great day! Here is a video of the pretty Eblouissante. Love those ears!

Still giggling about the dumplings:) It really is a cute word of endearment and would make for a funny cartoon. You can see a chubby horse, squeezing himself in the starting gate, still munching on some carrots. Then getting stuck exiting while the others are already halfway down the race. Finally, he gets catapulted out of the gate – and under the promise of peppermints-treats – rolls by the other horses to win the Derby. Of course it gets a bit problematic at the winner’s circle as our Dumpling inhales the roses and a lady’s hat – hee hee. Sorry, I am in a silly mood again! I should draw this lol

Hi Zenny girl friend! I haven’t been on the computer for a couple of days. I found this link (I’m not sure if any other fan has posted it, so forgive the repeat!)

Have a beautiful day!!!

Oh Z, you are so cute, I read you news everyday. I love the name Roxanne, after the Police Song. It has nothing to do with your name or Bernie’s, but I just love it.
