Good Morning,
I have received so many FUN messages lately. You are all TOO CUTE! Needless to say, my Barn 55 Friends do keep in touch with ME and all that is going on in my life at the farm. David constantly updates Dottie and John on everything that I am doing. All of the messages are passed along to my dear California family and friends. I often TANGO with them as well. Ann and I do this quite often. I know they miss ME…but we really do keep in very close contact.
I have to say, my dear pal, SOPHIE SHIRREFFS, sent me the cutest message this morning. Firstly, she wanted ME to know that “OUR JOHN” had a fabulous birthday and he truly wants to THANK EACH OF YOU for the kind wishes. She also sent ME a big YIPPEE on my IN FOAL STATUS! She is EXCITED and said all of my BARN 55 friends are absolutely ELATED!
Sophie then added that she heard there is a contest taking place on-line having people suggest a name for my foal. Well, she thinks the name DUMPLING would be TOO CUTE if my foal is a filly. The reason for this is a very inside story.
It is my understanding that often in human families there is a sweet ‘pet name’ or term of endearment that is used when referring to family members and/or loved ones. Well, in our family, Dottie has always used the term “THE DUMPLINGS” to lovingly refer to the MOSS HORSES. As a collective group, we horses have been and are extremely creative both on and off the race track. Not only are we in training athletes at different stages of our careers, but we also send cards, gifts, letters, and messages all of the time. Then when sending notes and updates to our owners about us, Dottie often comments that THE DUMPLINGS are doing this or that. It is truly a loving way in which she has always addressed US!
Thus, that is why SOPHIE suggested DUMPLING as one possible name to be considered.
As you know, the Jockey Club does have very specific rules about naming a horse. The name has to “BE AVAILABLE”. It can’t be in current use or the name of a current producing mare or stallion. Some names are PERMANENTLY removed from consideration as they belong to a very prominent and ‘historical’ horse. I’m proud to say, my name, ZENYATTA, is now in this classification. It will not be able to be used again for another horse. SECRETARIAT’s name is also historical and it falls into this same category. The names of Kentucky Derby Winners are also viewed in this way…and may not be used again. It is truly an honor to be respected on such a level.
Other things may also prevent a name from being accepted. If it is too similar to a current name or if it is ‘reserved’ by an owner to be used in the future, it will be considered as NOT available.
When submitting a name to the Jockey Club for a horse, you may use up to 18 letters…including spaces. You may not use someone’s specific name without their written permission. All names must also ‘appear available’ through the Interactive Naming Program and ultimately be approved by the Jockey Club before officially being accepted for a particular horse.
As a result, it is truly NOT an easy task to name a horse. So many wonderful names are already taken. When you consider that over 30,000 thoroughbreds are born each year in our country…finding that one special or unique name can be a ‘fun’ challenge.
The Jockey Club has a web-site. If you go to it, THE JOCKEY CLUB, and then click on INTERACTIVE REGISTRY, you will see a screen that has several options. Please click on ONLINE NAMES BOOK and try a few of your choices. Have some fun with it and get creative! You’ll see, getting the name you really love is not always easy!
Hmmm….DUMPLING! Dottie just tried it and per the Jockey Club Progam…it is already in use. A 2010 horse has the name. Next, we tried ‘The Dumpling’…not happening. Getting a bit more creative, we tried ‘MY DUMPLING’…and YIPPEE…it appears available! Options, options! Names are just one more fun thing for ME to contemplate!
Good Thinking, Sophie!
With love,
Hugs to All~

Tried Zwinner,but taken.
Options…Zpride, Zbest, Zfastest, Zheart, Zlegacy. oR…could combine the idea of both Bernardini and Zenyatta with BZbest, BZfastest, BZlegacy…None of these were taken :).

I think ZenZational would be an appropriate name for your offspring, whether male or female. Just want it to be healthy and that you have an easy pregnancy and delivery.

cute! I like Yipeee! too!

I just had the most fun time checking out names on the Jockey Registry. Zendini, one of the fan favorites, is available. So is My Moma Can Dance. Of my favorites, along with Zendini for a colt- Zorina, for a filly, is not available, but Zerina is available. Another of my favorites, “Heartsong”, is not available, but “My Heartsong ” is . A very interesting diary today, Dottie, and I think we are all pretty creative, if I may say so myself (Blush,Blush).

P.S. John – Meant delicious disaster. :) :)

How about “_ MOSS DUMPLING” You have to insert the missing letter that sounds like C. :) Sammys’ doings!
Sophie you are just too cute and obviously the “dumpling” of your Mama Dottie’s eye. Glad your John had a great Birthday and congratulations on Nereid today. She looked so good and yes, TVG commented how Barn 55 horses always look good. It’s not the first time they’ve said that. Todd and Simeon are very appreciative of John’s barn and the good care the horses reflect.
Would be remiss if I didn’t mention Makoma and am hoping that the news is good concerning her status. Thanks Chantal, for looking after her best interest, and proving time and time again why you are such an asset to racing. By the way, I have a great picture of you. I took it the day Hollywood Park honored the Big Girl in 2008. Whew, sure have to be creative when discussing her, seeing as how I don’t have that all important letter. :)
Nitety nite, to all.

Dearest Z, Thanks for another wonderful diary entry. Good night, now, and sleep tight.
@DOREEN—Thank you so much for the info that Makoma was not seriously injured. I was there and greatly distressed to see Chantal come back horseless and know that the van was taking Makoma. Now I can rest easier tonight.
@John Shirreffs—Congratulations on your win with Nereid—I was thrilled to be able to watch you saddle her. And I so hope it is true that Makoma’s condition is not serious. I’ll include her in my prayers tonight.

Just use Her Majesty or His Majestry – since they will be royalty of course!!

IndyScribeableZen – The feeling we will all have thinking of Zenny’s foal, dancing in the paddock, crossing the finish line, or just plain being. A nod to “Gramps” Indy, Zen how your momma makes us feel, and “scribeable” the fact that you will be written about like no other, except mom Zenny of course. Or maybe just simply “ZEN”.

Happy Birthday (belated) to Mr. Shirreffs. That photo of Ms. Sophie and Mrs. Ingordo-Shirreffs is TOO CUTE! Love the name choices. Have a great weekend Zenyatta and her team!

I’m so happy for you Zenny! :) These name suggestions are TOO CUTE ;)
I really like the names ‘My Mama Can Dance’ and ‘Zendini’. ‘My Dumpling’ is really cute too, but doesn’t sound like someone who could be a great racehorse one day.
Since you are the Queen, why not name your foal:
Prince Z
or..
Princess Z :)
Best wishes Zen! We all love you

Forgot to say that i love the name ‘ZenZational’ a lot :D

Zenny…it just dawned on me that not only do we share April 1st. birthdays but my maiden name in German means “dumpling”. Could it be we are soul sisters, after all? Too, cute! ;-)

Why not name the foal “Mondatta”, then we would have “Zenyatta Mondatta” the name of the album by The Police that Zenyatta was named from……..

Hi Zenny, congrats with the good news, you’ll be a wonderful mommy. Happy belated birthday to John. Little Sophie is adorable and a lot better at the naming game then I am. I haven’t even named our new cat yet, who we adopted a couple weeks ago, we were going to name him after the Preaknesswinner but somehow Shack doesn’t stick. King doesn’t either allthough we adopted Queenie in november (she is ancient and has no teeth) I guess it’s going to be Animal, he is slightly neurologic and deaf, our vet says that his mother probably had distemper when she had him. I’ll leave naming Zenny’s baby to the Mosses. @Dona – love your posts, those darn cats! @ LauraJ – good luck tonight with Step, we’re in the same race and I have a rootinginterest in an other horse in that same race (go figure ) but a safe journey to all. Hope we come 1 2 3 .

Thank you for the information about names for your baby, I will play around a bit, thought of ZZ, but not quite dramatic and dynamic enough for your child. Glad Your John had a great birthday, I love you, Big Girl, have a wonderful day…you are probably out grazing in the grass right now…Lisa g.
