Good Morning,
I have received so many FUN messages lately. You are all TOO CUTE! Needless to say, my Barn 55 Friends do keep in touch with ME and all that is going on in my life at the farm. David constantly updates Dottie and John on everything that I am doing. All of the messages are passed along to my dear California family and friends. I often TANGO with them as well. Ann and I do this quite often. I know they miss ME…but we really do keep in very close contact.
I have to say, my dear pal, SOPHIE SHIRREFFS, sent me the cutest message this morning. Firstly, she wanted ME to know that “OUR JOHN” had a fabulous birthday and he truly wants to THANK EACH OF YOU for the kind wishes. She also sent ME a big YIPPEE on my IN FOAL STATUS! She is EXCITED and said all of my BARN 55 friends are absolutely ELATED!
Sophie then added that she heard there is a contest taking place on-line having people suggest a name for my foal. Well, she thinks the name DUMPLING would be TOO CUTE if my foal is a filly. The reason for this is a very inside story.
It is my understanding that often in human families there is a sweet ‘pet name’ or term of endearment that is used when referring to family members and/or loved ones. Well, in our family, Dottie has always used the term “THE DUMPLINGS” to lovingly refer to the MOSS HORSES. As a collective group, we horses have been and are extremely creative both on and off the race track. Not only are we in training athletes at different stages of our careers, but we also send cards, gifts, letters, and messages all of the time. Then when sending notes and updates to our owners about us, Dottie often comments that THE DUMPLINGS are doing this or that. It is truly a loving way in which she has always addressed US!
Thus, that is why SOPHIE suggested DUMPLING as one possible name to be considered.
As you know, the Jockey Club does have very specific rules about naming a horse. The name has to “BE AVAILABLE”. It can’t be in current use or the name of a current producing mare or stallion. Some names are PERMANENTLY removed from consideration as they belong to a very prominent and ‘historical’ horse. I’m proud to say, my name, ZENYATTA, is now in this classification. It will not be able to be used again for another horse. SECRETARIAT’s name is also historical and it falls into this same category. The names of Kentucky Derby Winners are also viewed in this way…and may not be used again. It is truly an honor to be respected on such a level.
Other things may also prevent a name from being accepted. If it is too similar to a current name or if it is ‘reserved’ by an owner to be used in the future, it will be considered as NOT available.
When submitting a name to the Jockey Club for a horse, you may use up to 18 letters…including spaces. You may not use someone’s specific name without their written permission. All names must also ‘appear available’ through the Interactive Naming Program and ultimately be approved by the Jockey Club before officially being accepted for a particular horse.
As a result, it is truly NOT an easy task to name a horse. So many wonderful names are already taken. When you consider that over 30,000 thoroughbreds are born each year in our country…finding that one special or unique name can be a ‘fun’ challenge.
The Jockey Club has a web-site. If you go to it, THE JOCKEY CLUB, and then click on INTERACTIVE REGISTRY, you will see a screen that has several options. Please click on ONLINE NAMES BOOK and try a few of your choices. Have some fun with it and get creative! You’ll see, getting the name you really love is not always easy!
Hmmm….DUMPLING! Dottie just tried it and per the Jockey Club Progam…it is already in use. A 2010 horse has the name. Next, we tried ‘The Dumpling’…not happening. Getting a bit more creative, we tried ‘MY DUMPLING’…and YIPPEE…it appears available! Options, options! Names are just one more fun thing for ME to contemplate!
Good Thinking, Sophie!
With love,
Hugs to All~

p.s. You wrote: “you may use up to 18 letters…including spaces.” to name a race horse. Thanks for clarifying this! I got into a mini debate on fb ~ I won!! Some people insisted the name didn’t have a limit (eyes rolling…) :-P

“Royal T” The “T” standing for thoroughbred, of course.

Can u imagine if the guy who named his horse” The wife doesn’t know” had that name taken lol , Zenny any name you choose will be perfect because you are perfect…in every way ….I <3 you so much , you are my heart xoxoxoxo
Stephanie
@Judy , I remember that argument LoL haha , I do believe you won, just like Zenny xoxoxo

@Charlotte Farmer–Last I heard about Jerry Lambert he was training arabians out at Los Alamitos. The arabians seem to have disappeared out there so I have no idea what he is doing now. @Judy Berube-Thanks for the information on Master of Hounds.@Judy Berube and Susan in TN–Master of Hounds had a lot going against him in the Kentucky Derby. He had just shipped in from England and was in quarantine and did not have any registered workouts. He has had a chance to get a feel of dirt racing now and he should be tough in the Belmont. The distance will not be a problem for him. A lot of dreams have been quashed in the Belmont, the latest having been Big Brown. However, unlike Big Brown, none of these horses have the added burden of going for the triple crown. Nehro and Animal Kingdom appear to be the ones to beat. I hope Mucho Macho Man does it, but I doubt it. Everyone seems to be having a good time with the naming. I just hope the foal is healthy. However, of all the names that have been proposed, I do like Mondatta.

Dumpling is darling, and I thought the cartoon scenario Astrid visualized and posted really, really too cute. (You definitely should draw this up, Astrid) I love it as a pet name; however, I think a name for Z’s foal should be one that is regal and majestic.

I would suggest “ZANJERY/ZANNJERRY” . While the Mosses are far too modest, this would be a great tribute to them! They are wonderful people.

Isn’t Carlton House Zenny’s half brother in which case shouldn’t we be rooting for him? Long live the Queens!
J Smith
I still vote for Zendini or Zenavdini, throwing an a v in the middle to acknowledge the great AP Indy, and v for Vertigneux.
Carlton House, Epsom Derby – he bruised a hoof at beginning of week, I just checked online, said he trained well, most likely will run. Link will tell u all u need to know about Epsom Derby. Should be on HRTV. Anyone in San Fernando Valley, I emailed the White Harte Pub in Woodland Hills to see if they were open early and showing it, will post again if they are. Anyone wanna get up early and meet there for breakfast? Check back this afternoon to see if I post they open though. If Zenny puts up a new post, I will put it on the new one. http://www.anddownthestretchtheycome.com/2011/6/1/2199619/epsom-derby-2011-contenders-odds-entries-carlton-house

Zen…you have really gotten everyone so excited with your news…I love it! i am sure whatever name is chosen, it will come from the loving hearts of Ann & Jerry and I have a feeling it will be an “ear catcher!” I am sure that the Mosses won’t leave Bernie out of the decision making process…what are his thoughts, now that you have some of ours. I am sure he is just humble and being a total gentleman and letting you decide!!
Make sure you take your vitamins, drink plenty of water, exercise and rest…
and here are a few ideas…
“Eclipse”
“April Fools”
“Verti-Go”

Sweet Zenyatta, I hope you are feeling well and happy. Just thinking about you helps me get through the day. Really hope that someday I will get to meet you. You are the greatest

Redhotandspicy is my racehorse name haha. LOL SO cute. Im going to watch Dumpling’s first race :D PROMISE.

That picture of Sophie sitting in Dottie’s hand is just adorable.. she’s so tiny! Wishing John a belated but very sincere Happy Birthday, and wishing him many, many more (“belated” because I try but just can’t get over here every day; “sincere” because I hope it was absolutely wonderful; and “many, many more” because of all the future racehorses he has to help become champions). If I had a thoroughbred to name, I might call him/her “The Closer” and then pray that they could live up to it. Zenyatta was the best “closer” I ever saw.
Lexi
OMGEE “April Foolz” or “Happy April Fools” Would be SO cute if the foal is enormous. Cuter if the foal is clumsy and looks like it can’t do anything on racetrack but go and beat everyone easily like Zenyatta. haha :)
Ida Lee
Thanks for the heads-up on the Paddy O’Prado article. I cried and cried and cried some more when Paddy was hurt and retired. I love this boy so much. Not just cause he’s drop-dead gorgeous but what a talent. By the way, does Zenyatta like silver blonds???
Janet Mcg
Please, NO Dumpling. We don’t want ‘cute’. We want a tough racehorse name. Of course it must have Dancing in it. Maybe Dancing Zendini ? Love you Z
Vicki B.
Yeah, I like “Wink Wink” for the name, too. I don’t care for “Dumpling”, but if your heart’s set on it, whatever you name her/him/it will be wonderful, I’m sure.
Pam
Hi, Zenny – I called my friend, Vicky, (who is your biggest fan) with the great news. I said, “Guess what?” She said, “Zenyatta is in foal.” I asked her how she knew already and she said, “What else could make you so happy?” We’re counting down the days!
I’m sorry that I missed John’s birthday so I’d like to send him belated birthday wishes and I hope this next year is as exciting and successful as last year! And many more!!!
HMMM, I haven’t even thought about a name. When my colt was born, I had a list of names that I liked but he earned his name of Jet because he would zoom all over the pasture. All of you are so creative and I love all the suggested names. We have so much to look forward to!
Thanks for writing to all of us and including the most adorable pictures. I found the information on the Jockey Club rules concerning names very interesting. I’m glad that your name can never be used again. There’s only one Zenyatta!
Hope you have a great weekend….lots of grazing in the sun and special treats for our mother-to-be.

In case anyone is interested, there is a short video of Eblouissante, Zen’s little sister at John’s Barn 55 on YouTube. You can see both her mother and father in her…those wonderful large ears and Bernardini’s dark brown shiney coat.

Oh Boy, Carolyn is spot on! Dumpling? You must be kidding! This unborn foal is going to grow up and into a majestic creature, the look of eagles all over her! Dignity, I am begging for it!

Does anyone have an address or email for Jerry & Ann Moss.I just met a world renown equine artist& saw much of his work, which is absolutely fabulous. He is an admirer of Zenyatta, & tells me that he would be available to do a painting of her. He said there would be prints available. His name is Jim Crow, his wife’s name is”Dottie”, phone 859-792-6394
Jim’s work is on display for the month of June at the Art Museum in Danville, Ky

There’s an opportunity being offered for the highest bidder at the eighth annual “Night of the Stars,” the June 18 fundraiser for Central Kentucky Riding for Hope being held at the Keeneland Entertainment Center in Lexington to visit Zenyatta at Lanes End.

The name of the foal has got to be strong (not Dumpling), one word and have its own identity. Look at the past great horses, they have mostly had all one word names. Secretariat, Barbaro, Citation, and the greatest of all, Ruffian. So this future little fella or gal of Z’s needs a good, strong, meaningful name. They will figure it out.

Also, vets have released the diagnosis of what was ailing Uncle Mo. It looks like he is on the mend. How his health is over the next three months however will be a determining factor for his future in racing. I hope he continues to get better each and every day.

Will there be opportunities to meet Zenyatta like Rachel Alexandra has? I saw that there was a competition for six lucky fans too; i wish i had enough money, then i’d bid all of it :)
