Good Morning,
Thank you so much for all of the kind messages you have sent ME offering congratulations on my IN FOAL news! Dottie and John were reading them last night and told ME about them! I am still chuckling at the cute names all of you are suggesting.
I also thought it was TOO CUTE when you referred to ME as having a BABY BUMP! I’m still giggling over this comment! And a name that is still making me smile is WINK WINK! How precious is this!
I promise I will do my very best to eat properly and stay nice and healthy. As you can see, I’m out enjoying the lush grass with my dear friend, Mona De Momma! She is a Grade 1 winning mare by Speightstown. As a matter of fact, Mona also raced in California…so we have a great deal in common.
The weather is quite warm in Lexington now. The rain has stopped for a bit and the sun is shining.
I’m one very happy HORSE!
Again, thank you for all of your kind messages. Happy JUNE!
With Love,
Hugs to all~(Especially my dear JOHN on his birthday!)

Such a beautiful photo again!! Thank you for sharing. Sarah is becoming quite talented at capturing you in wonderful, peaceful scenes. I am so happy that everything is going so well for you and your team at this point. That Kentucky bluegrass does look delightful and delicious! Along with you and all the rest I’d like to wish a very Happy Birthday to Mr. Shirreffs also! Have a beautiful day and thank you for uplifting mine!

@Judy B, Step is OK. He was a bit lazy in his first race. He’s running again Saturday (I think). It’s a 7f claiming race.
—
@Trina, thanks! Hooves crossed! Hopefully he will try a little harder this time. He just did not get “into” his first race.
—
@Charlotte Farmer, have you spoken to the Kentucky Horse Park as a possible resting place for Noor? The park contains the remains of many well known horses, so they’d probably at least consider it.
—
@Izzy and Cheryl C, the Mosses have said they do not want to know the sex of the foal. They would rather it be a surprise. According to the previous diary post, this is their usual practice. A lot of times people do want to know the sex in order to make purchasing or keep/sell decisions, but this baby won’t be going anywhere but the Moss’s stable.
–
@Teresa E, I think you are right and the Mosses probably have a name, or at least a short list, already picked out.

@ Dona and Charlotte Farmer: Thank you for mentioning Native Diver and bringing his name to the fore. I looked him up and was amazed that he had 81 starts, 37 wins, 7 place, and 12 shows!!! Which means he was in the money nearly 70% of the time! What a stupendous horse. Has to rank up there with Kelso and John Henry for longevity and being just plain remarkable. Hope Abigail Anderson does one of her profiles at her blog on this one. He deserves to be remembered.

Z-girl, love you, and so glad you seem to be thriving in your new role! Love someone calling it a “baby bump”!! TOO CUTE! Hooves crossed for smooth sailing until March of next year. Big hugs! Your friend, Ann Maree
P.S. Hope John had a super birthday!

P.S. Someone thanked you for this wonderful site where we get all the news about Z and her new life. In reading the news stories, nearly all the top outlets quoted verbatim from Z’s Diary!! What a wonderful tribute to Team Zenyatta for not only caring about this great mare, but for sharing her with her fans! It’s a phenomenon I’m sure Team Z hadn’t planned for, but have taken it in stride. This is a story without end….Zenyatta’s aura just grows and grows and she spreads joy and love wherever she appears — in our thoughts, watching her races, gazing at her pictures, viewing videos made by adoring fans — she is a force unto herself. Here she is, nearly 6 months into “broodmare obscurity”, and news of her is shot round the world! Her Facebook fans have grown to nearly 85,000!!! TOO CUTE!!! Big hugs, mommy-to-be!! Ann Maree

Dearest Sweet “Z”,
Good morning! I am glad that we gave ‘your’ Dottie and John some smiles…what better gift and way to say “Thank You” for the joy they give to others. You most likely already have the perfect name chosen, but thank you for allowing us the indulgence! ZenStar and HeartofZen have a nice ring too :)
………………………………….
To Trina: I will bring my black Z cap too :) In case I don’t see you – sending a “Z” hug and blessings for a beautiful today!
………………………………….
To Margie: It’s the Irish – I try and keep it locked up but the leprechaun escapes now and then :)
…………………………………
To Juanita: or Zenson!
………………………………..
To MK: Agreed! Definitely on the top 5, with “Z” of course, for a gourmet vegetarian lunch w/ Guinness!
…………………………………
Gloria Jeanne – Thank you for the happy links!
…………………………………
Shari V.: You are very brave, I am not sure I could have made it to the car :) Maybe we could see a photo of Dusty?
DJ
p.s. Kari B.- Thank you for the beautiful video. It was truly a musical prayer and the perfect start to the day. I am sure “Z”s family will be touched.

I’m really hoping my fabulous TB mare Summer pops the same time you do next year! That would be awesome. Good luck and stay healthy!

Happy Birthday to your “Sugar Daddy”, Zenny!
And to the man himself- HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JOHN.
You exemplify the absolute best in thoroughbred trainers.
Hope each and every day you train and share your horses with us gives you a sense of well deserved pride.
As we follow your pregnancy Z, we will also follow John’s up and comers, knowing he will be as good and kind to them as he is/was to you.

I hate to admit that I can’t sit here and read all of these posts everyday-my loss no doubt, but I do pick up the links which I thoroughly enjoy-thank you all. Best wishes to John for a marvelous birthday that goes on and on. Much love to you, Z, and all of you who cherish the creatures that share your life.

With all of the posts remembering Native Diver, I was inspired to tell this rather funny story. In the old days when there was no Sunday racing in California, the local CBS affiliate. KNXT, Channel 2, hosted a live race of the week show on Saturday. The telecast was from whatever local track was running at the time. At the end of the race, Gil Stratton, who was a local sports reporter on TV, would interview the winning jockey. It got to be the Shoemaker show since he was the winner so often. One Saturday Stratton was interviewing Shoe in the winner’s circle and a man standing just outside the area started yelling “That race was fixed. I’ve got the evidence right here in my back pocket.” Security hustled hiom away. Stratton then resumed his interview with Shoemaker. The first thing Shoemaker said was “I was kind of wondering just what that guy had in his back pocket.” The point of this story is that years from now fans will remember Zenyatta much in the same way as we oldsters remember Native Diver. And everyone who loves Zenyatta and posts on this site will be part of it. Native Diver was great, but Zenyatta is never to be forgotten by any who saw her.

@Helen in Michigan…well said..John is the best in the horse racing business and I do mean “business”. His patience and kindess show in every horse he has been responsible for training. Dottie and the Mosses knew what they were doing when they entrusted their lives and fortunes to his remarkable skill and endless quiet authority. Zenyatta is the perfect example of a race mare…a winner on the tack and now a brood mare of remarkable probabilities.) The future of the sport depends on us (women)and the kind of trainer, like John and Micheal Matz (Barbaro) who understand it’s “training” and not “terrorizing”…God bless…

I vote for WINK WINK. That is a name that would get smiles for years to come listening to an announcer say “and down the stretch they come … it’s WINK WINK ahead in the Kentucky Derby!”
Your humble J
Lil from KY
Jeanie—-You can vote all you want, but I”m Sure Wink Wink will not be considered!
How many people would know that name had anything to do with the great Zenyatta!!
Patricia Emery
If not “wink-wink,” what about “too cute,” since that seems like a common term used here frequently!
Have a great day “Z” her team and all of her fans!

@Joyce-I thought I was a Native Diver fan but your friend was a FAN. The Diver died at UC Davis while vets were trying to save him. His last race was a winning effort in the Del Mar Handicap.

I wrote a poem about you but I’ve no idea on where to put it! I think I can see a belly bump in that picture up there! Congrats Queen Z! That baby’s gonna have one fine mother!

For those of you who enjoy the “race calls” and a good chuckle:
Tom Durkin @ Saratoga and a horse named “Arrrrr”. Arrrrr is now retired and adopted by a mother and daughter team who love him dearly.

@Judy Berube–I am actually beginning to think that Master of Hounds has a chance in the Belmont. However, Nehro is still my first choice.

It’s so wonderful to see you happy and content, that certainly makes for a happy foal. You look so beautiful out grazing around with friends. I’m so happy to know everything is going well, hooves crossed for a happy and healhy little one. You will make one heck of a Mom. I always look forward to the post, don’t always post a comment but read them all. I’m so excited to watch you “grow” into motherhood. You’re the best! :)
