Good Morning,
I hope all of you are having a happy, healthy week! Everything at Lane’s End is going very well. My paddock pals and I are ALL enjoying the lovely weather and every moment of snacking on the lush Kentucky Blue Grass!
I’d also like to thank you for the kind comments you have written about my dear little sister, EBLOUISSANTE. As you have already noted in your responses, she is not owned by the Moss’…but by our BREEDER. He bred both of US!
On a horse’s JOCKEY CLUB PAPERS (the birth certificate for a horse), the name of the BREEDER is always listed. BREEDING is such an incredibly important part of our industry. The BREEDER is technically the person who owns the mare at the time the foal is born. Sometimes, a mare owner may ‘foal share’. This means that one person owns the mare and another individual provides the stallion season used for this mating. Under these conditions, each party would be listed as the ‘breeder of the resulting horse’ and each would own an interest in that particular foal from the moment it is born.
The majority of the time, though, the breeder owns the MARE and selects the stallion she will be bred to that year. The mare owner secures the stallion season for his mare and thus becomes both the owner and breeder of the foal once born.
A mating is planned with many significant components that need to be considered. Some of the most important are pedigree elements, conformation, size, and the overall general health of both parents. Many people also want to factor in and consider the particular running style of a horse and/or the distance capabilities of each of the potential parents Is the hope to have a pedigree that will encourage more SPEED QUALITIES or are you looking to reinforce the STAMINA INFLUENCE in this family line? There is so much to be considered. It is truly a huge responsibility for an owner to breed the best horse possible.
I would think that the main goal of a BREEDER would be to breed a quality foal who is healthy, strong, very sensible, and has good conformation. It sure looks like “E” got off to a great start in ALL of these areas! (JUST LIKE ME!) Thank you, MOM! She certainly was a great influence on both of us!
In racing literature, it is often stated that breeding horses is not an exact science. It takes a lot of HARD WORK, PATIENCE, and VERY IMPORTANTLY…LUCK!
My owners do have several broodmares. I am one of them! They enjoy the entire process…every step of the way! In our SPORT, it is often said that winning with a homebred is a very, very special thrill because of the total involvement you’ve had with the horse from the earliest stages of it’s life!
JUST IMAGINE….with foal crops of well over 30,000 horses born each year in our country…to be the ONE who breeds a horse who wins the Kentucky Derby or a Breeders’ Cup Classic…what an ACHIEVEMENT this is!
This is not only a complete THRILL….it is TRULY A GIFT!
With love,
Hugs to All~(Isn’t my baby sister TOO CUTE!)

Hi Zenny: Very interesting post today. Thanks for all this information. I am trying to put it all together. So when you were born, your breeder owned you and your mom. Then your breeder decided to take you to the auction. That’s when David and Dottie came along and saw the magnificent you and thought you would be a perfect addition to the Moss family and to Barn 55. So if that is the case, do you think Mr. and Mrs. Moss just might adopt E? Zenny, has your friend Sophie met your sister yet? How is Sophie doing anyway? We haven’t heard about her in awhile. Take care, Zenny. Love, Linda

Dearest Sweet “Z”,
Time to settle in and say goodnight! And to you as well “E-ars” :)
You are both TOO PRECIOUS for words.

All of the stories and comments were so uplifting today..thank you all!

Shari V. My son and I also started a similar shoebox idea when he was in third grade (he is now in college). We asked his teacher if the class could fill shoeboxes and label them by age and gender and fill them with goodies, gifts, toys, toothpaste, soap, and wrap them, with a $5 donation enclosed as well. Your idea is of most importance and heartfelt as it is for those in crisis. I pray the school will allow the implementation. I know ours had to pass through the appropriate channels but eventually did say “YES”! and we started something the children felt great about each and every Christmas as they became to understand that the ‘Gift’ is the Giver. Blessings to you and your little ones.

Zenny, Your little sister is ADORABLE!! Your mom did have quite an influence on the both of you… Nitey Nite ZZZZZZZ.

Shari V, your classroom must be a great place to be and learn. Brooke seems like a good kid who has grown to love everything about horses because of your wisdom. Thanks Zenny for having Dottie transcribe another “lesson” for us.

Gosh!!!
This breeding business is quite intricate. More than
a pedigree and facts. A real “gestault” to really get
The whole package.
@Judy B
Thanks for the reminder about the purpose of AK unusual
pedigree.
Stamina and
Tessa
When is she going to race? I hope she races soon.
Love ya Z

Zenny, You are truly a gift to everyone.

Hi Zenny – It’s been a long time since I’ve written you. My posts have been more of a serious nature. But here I am to say hello and tell you what a beautiful little sister you have. She is also very, very cute. It is too bad you two can’t get together. I’m sure it would be love at first sight and you would romp around the paddock like two best friends. You’d also be such a good mentor and teacher to her. She has so much to learn. But then too, she is in the gentle, patient hands of your John who will let her grow and blossom at her own pace same as he did with you. And we will all be able to see her bloom into the beautiful race horse and loving soul like you are. And as for you, I was remembering when you first arrived in Kentucky and it was so cold and so snowy for so long. Your friend Charles would lead you out everyday and carefully walk you around the paddock making sure you didn’t stumble or fall. And then one day they set you lose and all the farm hands took their places along the paddock to be there for you in case you needed them. But you didn’t. You were as sure footed as you always were on the race track. And though I still watch the video from time to time, I really don’t need to because it is ingrained on my memory. The first time you took off running. You kicked up your heels, arched your back, tossed your head and off you went with a glorious whinny. It was a love story for me. And now we wait for nature to take its course and a new adventure in your life to begin. Will it change you? Will we see a new side of you? Only time will tell. But I can tell you this, whatever happens, you can always come home to us because we all have a place in our hearts as big as the sea for you. Much love Zenyatta. Good night, sweet dreams.

Found your two posts at end of 256. Did not look down
Far enough. Appreciate the links.
I really like the one you got of Mario and Carmen and Zen.
A very special relationship between groom, hot walker
And horse. Groom has much responsibility in monitoring
Horse after racing. Did you find larger 16 by 20 around
Worked best
Vicki B.
@signofthetimes – I feel like we’re playing “phone tag” here. I got home from work, saw it hadn’t cleared moderation, and reposted on #256, in two parts, msgs to you and to @Trina. And yes, I’m still patting my bronze Zenny — lol, that’s not going to end!

What a great summary of Z’s info. E will become
A broodmare at Winter Farms and replace her
Mom who was sold to Coolmore. She will be part
Of Mr Kronfeld’s breeding program. The Mosses have
Z who is Also bred by Kronfeld for their broodmare band.
It is a little different to think about mares and stallions
To improve lines etc rather than be friends with each
Other and be owned by the same people.
Great understanding on your part!!!! Zenny teaches us all
A lot.
suzen
Dear Zenyatta, you are a GIFT!
S (in san diego)
Great Pic! Yes..just To CUTE!! I have feeling that looking at E gives up a preveiw of what your little one wink wink) will look like.
Vicki B.
@signofthetimes – we’re on simultaneously! Yes, the 16 x 20 is great for the one of Zenny, Mario and Carmen. But the 11 x 14 of Steve exercising Z is fine.
Holly Zemba
Thankyou for the info I learned something new again from you!!!
Vicki B.
@signofthetimes – In the one of Z, Mario and Carmen, there is such a look on Zenny’s face, as she lowers her head toward Carmen’s touch. There’s a tenderness to it, almost don’t have words for it. And the photo at the top of #242 with Ann, has a similar feeling.

Here is a situation you don’t see very offen, a Father, Daughter racing team.

Hi Queen Z…so nice to “meet” your sister. What a sweetheart, looking forward to seeing more of her. I’ve been catching up, or trying to, on this week’s posts..it is still 5.26 here in California…I am somewhat envious of those of you who can read and post on this site at work. No way could I do that. Sigh :( Would be nice. Moving on…@Trina Nagele on #255, thanks for the link to Geoff Shackelford’s book–enjoyed flipping through those wonderful photos. Wonder if he could be the same person at the track on Preakness Day??? @LauraJ # 257, enjoyed your Nate story.:) And to everyone else too numerous to mention, as Judy Berube often says I enjoy reading them all. What a treasure trove of stories and ideas. To say you are an inspiration, Queen Z, does not begin to describe it. Also enjoyed the links to Mike Smith…Which reminds me, there is a nice article by Jay Hovdey in today’s (26th) Racing Form. On Graham Motion.
Happy holiday weekend to one and all: people and equine and to all of the Animal Kingdom. To those of you in tornado country, scary and frightening does not begin to describe it and I am only reading about it or viewing it on TV. But for now I will say sweet dreams, Queen Z…am so pleased that you and your team keep us up to date with you and your friends. Yes, you are all very patient and hard working! Thanks!

Hi Zenny, real cute pictures of you and E. It will be good to see how she does when she starts racing. It is good to know that dear John is training her. What I would really like to know is how you are doing in regards to being in foal or not. I just keep wondering about that. Have a restfull weekend. We like to know that you are happy and love you.

Hi Z! It is late here-9:21 p.m. here in CA. It is almost tomorrow for you! I am so glad you give us such good information about breeding. It is always so interesting. I hope you and the girls enjoy your Kentucky
blue grass. It must be fun standing on the hill in your paddock or just laying in the sun. Have a wonderful day tomorrow! xxoo

I saw your old stall, Zenny, today and I saw baby sister Eblouissante. She is s-o-o-o- BIG!! what a big beautiful baby girl!!! and she has that same wonderful personality–all the way!!! She’s curious about everything!!! I went to visit my horses and then went down the shed row to Zenny’s old stall where I saw Mario and I forced myself NOT to cry. I did NOT CRY!! I looked at all the pix and then I went to around Bliou’s stall. She is wonderful and S_O_O_O BLACK. I saw no brown and no white . Just pitch black. So I will call her “Bliou” pronounced like the color BLUE. Love you, Zenyatta.

I will second that! Such a blessing to be able to breed a race horse or a sport horse and guide the foal through its life. Just love it!

Dear Zenny,
My perfect Memorial Day weekend: All our troops safe; all horses and jockeys safe; no more d$#@! tornados; all lost souls recovered and in loving hands; healing and rebuilding started here and in other parts of the world that have suffered awful things this year; and – – – a MEMORABLE announcement that you are safely in foal! diastu in tempe

I just watched a clip of MIKE SMITH winning in the U.K. Very well ridden race even though the tracks in the U.K. are a challenge, he rode like the champion he has always been and always will be. All the best in your future Mike.

I,too, think that Z has been bred secretly and may be pregnant as we speak. I know this happens with ladies who have miscarried.
They are not eager to share the news of a new pregnancy, in case it doesn’t work out. It is such a great disappointment when one is lost. It’s OK and we understand. Hey, Zenny, if you have a girl someday, what about “Zara” for the name? Little sis, E, is just adorable and reminds me of her big Sis. Night, Zenny. Sweet dreams!
Snoprinz
Thanks for the info on breeding and thanks for the beautiful pictures of Zen and sister E. Happy Memoral Day to you Zenny and to the LE and Barn 55 staff.

Sorry, I don’t mean just a happy Memorial day but a day to reflect and pay tribute to our American heroes.
