Good Morning,
I hope all of you are having a happy, healthy week! Everything at Lane’s End is going very well. My paddock pals and I are ALL enjoying the lovely weather and every moment of snacking on the lush Kentucky Blue Grass!
I’d also like to thank you for the kind comments you have written about my dear little sister, EBLOUISSANTE. As you have already noted in your responses, she is not owned by the Moss’…but by our BREEDER. He bred both of US!
On a horse’s JOCKEY CLUB PAPERS (the birth certificate for a horse), the name of the BREEDER is always listed. BREEDING is such an incredibly important part of our industry. The BREEDER is technically the person who owns the mare at the time the foal is born. Sometimes, a mare owner may ‘foal share’. This means that one person owns the mare and another individual provides the stallion season used for this mating. Under these conditions, each party would be listed as the ‘breeder of the resulting horse’ and each would own an interest in that particular foal from the moment it is born.
The majority of the time, though, the breeder owns the MARE and selects the stallion she will be bred to that year. The mare owner secures the stallion season for his mare and thus becomes both the owner and breeder of the foal once born.
A mating is planned with many significant components that need to be considered. Some of the most important are pedigree elements, conformation, size, and the overall general health of both parents. Many people also want to factor in and consider the particular running style of a horse and/or the distance capabilities of each of the potential parents Is the hope to have a pedigree that will encourage more SPEED QUALITIES or are you looking to reinforce the STAMINA INFLUENCE in this family line? There is so much to be considered. It is truly a huge responsibility for an owner to breed the best horse possible.
I would think that the main goal of a BREEDER would be to breed a quality foal who is healthy, strong, very sensible, and has good conformation. It sure looks like “E” got off to a great start in ALL of these areas! (JUST LIKE ME!) Thank you, MOM! She certainly was a great influence on both of us!
In racing literature, it is often stated that breeding horses is not an exact science. It takes a lot of HARD WORK, PATIENCE, and VERY IMPORTANTLY…LUCK!
My owners do have several broodmares. I am one of them! They enjoy the entire process…every step of the way! In our SPORT, it is often said that winning with a homebred is a very, very special thrill because of the total involvement you’ve had with the horse from the earliest stages of it’s life!
JUST IMAGINE….with foal crops of well over 30,000 horses born each year in our country…to be the ONE who breeds a horse who wins the Kentucky Derby or a Breeders’ Cup Classic…what an ACHIEVEMENT this is!
This is not only a complete THRILL….it is TRULY A GIFT!
With love,
Hugs to All~(Isn’t my baby sister TOO CUTE!)

Hi, Zenyatta! You and your sis are absolutely beautiful! Good looks run in the family! Hope you got some sleep last night…the storm kept me up half the night. I caught up on my magazine stack – hope the storm didn’t keep you and the girls up. Gotta run, beautiful girl..received this week’s edition of Blood-Horse today and hear it calling my name.

@Terry Crow: Thanks you for the kind words. Yes I knew the Woodlands well had such good times there. They had a contest one time and the winner got to have lunch with Lafitt Picay. I won, I was so thrilled to meet him I couldn’t really even eat. He was so nice and gracious this was just before they closed. I enjoyed going there to see racing and learned to bet a bit and won a bit and just had so much fun. Yes the people were very nice and made some new friendships. Big mistake for the Kansas legislature. Again thank you for your kind words. Don’t suppose you still live here we could get together if you did. Hugs.

Oh My God! Those ears! I love’em…you are definitely sisters…she is absolutely
“ebloissant!” What a pretty name too…
I knwo we are all anxiously waiting for another “wink,” but if we look at our calendars and the two ultrasound dates that would have to take place for things to be “OK,” we are only about 55 days out from when Dottie & the Mosses let us know of Zen’s miscarriage…so, I think we may have a few more days to wait…hope all is well!
Happy Memorial Day Everyone…

@Susan in TN – type Newmarket Gallops into Google and select ‘images’ some great pictures of horses on the gallops. Also view http://www.jockey-club-estates.co.uk/pages/JCENewmarket-UsingTheGallops.aspx
Mike exercised (rode out) 2 horses for Luca Cumani, who is one of the top Newmarket trainers. Let me know what you think

When we visited KY horse farms last November, our guide commented that Zenyatta had Kris S’s ears. Kris S is the sire of Vertigineux and Z’s and E’s grandsire. That was the first time we noted that indeed her ears were big and beautiful just like the rest of her.
Margie
Hi Zenny, hope you are safe and well. I love you, always. Great pix of you and Sis. I bet you’re trying to think of a way to get your sister and head on over to the Dairy Queen to hang out with Ms. Voltz’s students. Wouldn’t it be great fun? They’d probably name a treat after you…hmm – good idea!
@Shari Voltz: I love your students posts! They totally make me smile. Think it is so great that they are part of the Z family.
P.S. I’m also a So. Cal. gal very close to Hollywood Park and Barn 55, forever the Home of the Great Zenyatta. :-)

@audreyc; Valerie Cannon; Amanda g; Celeste; Barbara Wood; Terry Crow; Abigail from Montreal and Everyone:
I left a message for you at the end of Post #257.
Zenyatta’s #1 fan in Montana!

E looks like a developing filly and Z looks like a mature mare! Both very beautiful. It definitely is better to win with a home bred, I have had the opportunity to do so and there is no thrill to equal that! Remembering when they took their first steps to when they win either on the track or the show arena is TOO CUTE.
Terry Crow
@Kathy Kimber–The Woodlands was, indeed, a great place with some of the most friendly people I have ever met. I found that to be generally true in Kansas and Missouri. Took my wife a little north to see the bridges of Madison County and she was thrilled to see them and John Wayne’s birthplace in Winterset, Iowa. No, I’m sorry to say that I’m not in Kansas anymore but I still have plenty of friends in the Olathe area. May get back there someday, who knows? If I do, I will notify you in this post as I believe it will endure. Again, thank you and Judy Berube for the hugs. I could use them.

To Judy (Maass) Gadwood:
Thanks for the reminder on Maestro. Just watched the race live on Cali. Live Racing. Being a baby, Maestro ran greenly. He did pass a few horses at the end, but I think it was a good learning experience for him Hugs, Judy B.
Terry Crow
@Kathy Kimber–Forgot to comment on Lafitt Pincay. He is one of the nicest people I have ever met. He was autographing his book out at Santa Anita and there was quite a line to see him. When I got to the table, I said to him: “I only have two words for you. Rising Market.” When his people got over the fact that I wasn’t there to do him wrong, we all laughed. Rising Market was a horse he rode when he first came to California.

God Willing, I will breed, own, raise, train and race my own Triple Crown Winner!!!! Your right Z, having your own winning homebred is a very, very special thing. What a feat. Take care in Kentucky!!!
Love,
Jess

@Kimberly Potter and Susan in TN–sorry I missed your posts. When someone takes the time and trouble to direct something to me I always try to respond. Both of you commented about the Greyhound names. I have tried to envision a greyhound race with the crowd yelling the real names of the dogs. The image in my head is pretty funny. But of course, I would not wish to see any of the dogs injured. As far as pets in storms go, I had a basset hound which lost the use of her back legs. She used to howl when storms hit. I loved that dog and wish she could be with me again for awhile. I will meet her again.

Hi Zenny
Really love these two photos. Absolutely love the
Identical ears. Just like mom. It looks like she has
Your shoulders. Love that head, it is very Bernie
He does have an awesome head. Hope you had a great
Day. Thanks for explaining the breeder/owners roles and relationships.

@ judy berube ~ You’re welcome! That’s how I “watch” racing while I’m at work (wink wink) ;-)
I streamed the Apple Blossom last year & had 7 or so peeps standing behind me watching Zenny race for the first time! It was fun to see their reaction when she went from last to kicking it into gear LOL

@Judy B
Thanks for reposting the Haskin’s Preakness article.
I posted yesterday but may still be in moderation. It
Is a wonderful article. Remember AK is a homebred.

Hello beautiful Z. I learn something new here every day! Thank you for keeping us posted on how you are doing, as well as for “schooling” us on so many different topics. And thanks for giving your big fan family a place to talk to you and to each other. It is a daily dose of SUNSHINE :)
@Helen in Mich. and Sarah Powell…I feel the same way too.
I get so much out of everyone’s comments.
@Everyone…I am new to horses and racing, so I am absorbing everything here like a sponge. A huge thank you to all of you!
@Shari V. and kids…I still wish I was young and could be in your class. You seem to have so much fun and you are TOO CUTE :)
Sally (B)
Oh my golly sweet Z; we all saw why with all your competition, you are the greatest; and I ordered the Blood Horse this past year. After reading all that race across our great nation, in many stake races, it was truly the care & love of you that the team Z and a horse angel was with you all the time. You did it!!
That is why you are my once in a lifetime horse and I love you but also for who you are. I absolutely love this picture and your friendship with E. Ohhh! She is going to cared for and loved Z. How great life can be with love. I love you with a kiss on your soft nose!
Sue Noel
@ Shari Voltz-I hope your students from this year have computers at home so that they will be able to keep up with Zenyatta’s doings. Otherwise, they will be suffering from withdrawals!! They have had such fun with all of this it would be a shame if they could not continue on. I know I have said it before but I would have SO loved a teacher who taught the way you do and loved horses so much. All I could think about was HORSES,HORSES,HORSES!!!!
Of course I spend so much time every day
thinking about Queen Z that I guess I’m about as bad now as I was then!!!
If you hear from Dawn this week, please give her my love and tell her I’m thinking of her all through the day–every day! Thanks!!
The Kennedys in San Diego
Max, thank you.

@Margaret – loved your post about being first, then the “Rats” when it didn’t happen. I’ve thought I was going to be first a couple of times, but “not.” You had the right idea about words, and if I get a next time to try I’ll shorten up my post.
Don’t we all have fun here!
