Good Morning Everyone!
This photo is TOO CUTE! It’s my guy, Mike Smith, who helped us select the FINAL 4 for our ZENYATTA BRONZE CONTEST! Mike stopped by Dottie and John’s last night and held my reins in his hands…just like he did when we were racing. I think this definitely got him IN THE ZENYATTA MOOD to select our Final 4! This photo brings back great memories…for both Mike and I! We had lots of great times together!
The names of the FINAL 4 will be given…along with the thoughts each person expressed as to what I meant to he / she. Go to the bottom of this diary post and click the button next to the person whose entry you think deserves to win. Click the Vote button, and you’ll see the current results.
We will allow the voting to take place for one week. The winner will be announced next Wednesday, April 27th. John will look at the polls before he leaves for the barn that morning (5 o’clock in the morning, CA TIME) and the winner’s name will be posted.
The poll has been moved from the Facebook page to this website so that non-Facebook users may vote!
GOOD LUCK TO ALL 4 OF YOU!
ENTRY #1…..VICKI L. VINSON……APPLE VALLEY, CA I knew Zenyatta was “one” special horse the first time I saw her in person. She came over to me and stuck her nose right in front of my camera. That was before the ’08 Lady’s Secret. Little did I know that a year later she would become the best medicine in the world, in helping me through the worst time of my life. I’ll love you forever Zenyatta!
ENTRY #2…..VALERIE FRANKLIN….DAVISON, MI Zenny, you have made people believe in horse racing again. Our sport has suffered so much tragedy and in this time of economic disaster and with Barbaro and Eight Belles so fresh in our minds, you have given us a chance to escape and to dream. We love you more than you could ever quantify.
ENTRY #3…..GEORGIA HARPER…..BELLEVUE, WA My obsession began half way through your first year and such enthusiasm could not be ignored by my husband. After 49 years, my husband and I have become such good friends but are so busy with work and family we don’t always take time to actually think about one another. As a gift for our wedding anniversary last August, I received an email at work from my hubby with an itinerary attached for San Diego saying “Tickets for my queen to go see the Queen”. We not only had a wonderful day at Del Mar, never leaving the paddock and visiting with so many young people who had been there to see only you but we really enjoyed our time together. I’m not sure what we will do for our 50th this year, but I don’t think it will compete with the happiness we shared last year watching you come across the finish line and celebrating as best friends enjoying not just a horse race but watching the most magnificent thoroughbred ever. We miss you, we love you, and look forward to cheering on your foal.
ENTRY #4…..DAWN CONRAD…..CEDAREDGE, CO Dearest Zenyatta. “Why are you special to me?” Is it the stately stature of the Queen like carriage? Is it the glistening brown coat with the diamond dapples? Maybe it is the dance or those still moments with your head held high? Is it your intelligence and fathomless brown eyes? Was it your first run free or perhaps a camera-ride on the back of Pegasus? Is it posters in the stands, a warm crowd on a cold Kentucky night, the excitement you bought back to racing? Your place in its history and future, the Breeders Cup, 60 Minutes, Horse of the Year, Vox Populi Award? A Fred Stone portrait, Jamie Corum lithograph, Nina Kaiser bronze? The cheers I shouted the tears I shed? Certainly your beauty, power, grace, breathe taking speed, final kick, heart stopping finishes and 19/1. Absolutely your gut wrenching, never give up, try! It is all of this, yet more. It isn’t only who you are, but what you mean to each of us. With Team Z, you are Jerry and Ann’s pride and joy, John’s soul mate and patient masterpiece, Dottie’s muse and she your voice. Mike’s talent, guidance and prayers brought you home safe each race. At Barn 55, you had care from Mario, workouts with Steve, walks with Carmen, loving star struck visitors and kisses from all. At Lane’s End, paddock pals, peppermints, pears and precious motherhood. Your family embodies the word generosity and together you have been transformative. You give pure happiness to thousands. You are a horseman’s ideal, a child’s dream, a friend to charities, a moment of healing to someone ill, a smile in the face of sadness, a sweet memory to all those you meet and a wish of all those that you haven’t “including myself”. While totally unique, I see in you the memories of my youth: the Black Stallion, Flicka, Secretariat and my Cinder (a gift from a brother leaving for Vietman), live again. There were endless summer days of best friends, bareback rides, Breyer’s horses on the bedroom shelves and glorious Triple Crown winners. With you, I am that horse loving girl again. What fun! I have my own challenges in life, as everyone does. While I seek to remain positive there are those moments. You are there to lift my spirits and touch my soul. Your diary is a place of remarkable civility where information, support and all things Zenyatta are shared and celebrated. Facebook, over 70,000 and still counting! The experience has been once in a lifetime and continues to be a magical ride. In the end my love cannot be fully explained, it is simply heart felt and joyful. It is no mystery why the word “angel” is used to describe you, for you are a creation of God, a blessing to us all and a remarkable gift. For everything you are and everything you mean, Zenny, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. You are truly UNBELIEVEABLE! As always, sweet dreams. Hugs and kisses. XXXOOO
Wow! I hope you enjoyed reading these as much as I did! Dottie commented that she was literally in tears typing them for ME!
Vote for the ENTRY of YOUR CHOICE!
Blessings to All OF YOU who participated in this contest! I can’t THANK YOU ENOUGH for ALL OF THE LOVE AND KINDNESS you have shown ME!
With Love,
Hugs to ALL~

ToL Laura J.:
Eddington won over $1,000,000.00 in his career. Wouldn’t be a bad thing if Better Step Aside runs like him. Hope he does. Hugs, Judy B.
AJ from CA
@Astrid – Thanks for the Easter Day video link of Gifted who looks fantastic. His recovery process has truly been a miracle thanks to all the love and care from the folks at Hearts of Tucson. Really good news indeed!
Max
@Joan. You are so right. If luck is a key ingredient this year, it may be wide open. One writer said that all bets should be on whichever horse Borel rides. To Honor and Serve is also a Bernie baby. Both he and Thirsty have Northern Dancer in their lineage. He was a very lively horse who knew how to bite. Do you know if any of this year’s contenders have dispositions like War Emblem? That was a great story from the Kennedys. I like those kind of horses who do not always take orders from mere mortals.
Liz
Zenny…
Just wanted you to know that I miss you. I saw an amazing story about your family sending Breyer horses (of you of course) to school children. How thoughtful!! You and you’re family make us CA Gals so proud.
xoxoxo

@Joan, the trainer is Fred Chinn. We are looking at a MSW at 7f on May 14, if all goes well and he has his gate card by then. And I need to get a WV license. Step’s stablemate Wewe (Wewewealldawayhome) broke his maiden in the first race at CT today! He won by 2-1/2. He tries hard, but has had some bad luck in his previous starts.

@Judy b., boy that would be nice! Everybody hopes to catch lightning in a bottle. Hey, why not?
–
@Dawn, I hope to get to Claiborne this year. I’d like to meet my boy’s daddy.
DJ
Dearest Sweet “Z”,
Goodnight and best wishes to your “Z” family. I will be at H.P. on Thurs. with my family rooting for your Cloud Man #5 in the 7th. It’s going to be a tough race, but…he can do it again! Will of course be thinking of you sweet “Z”. Sweet dreamz
p.s. Thank you Dawn, however, we will be at S.A. on Derby Day :)
Shari: I am sure they will sleep well tonight, but important to build stamina right? – my son is still tired from finals all last week and the two weeks prior of studying. Never thought of peppermints!
Joan
@LaurelJ. Congrats to Wewe on breaking the maiden, love the name.LOL I will keep a eye out for the race and will let my friend know. Good luck to Step, safe trip home.
@Max.I was really big on TH&S,nice horse.Haven’t heard any stories about any of the 20 yet, but you know 3 year old colts have to have some issues.
@ the winner. Congrats to you for a race well run.
Love ya Z

Zenny…hope all the rain in Louisville isn’t keeping you inside too much. Good night, big girl.

Good evening Zenyatta
another day, another evening turning to night, I bet you & everybody in your barn has turned in, and lights out.
There’s talk about some of your stallion friends, oneryness, disposition etc. I recall, one of your excercise riders telling the tale on you, how you used to throw everybody off with your vertical arobics routine, those stallions got nthg on you. Ha But still, ‘Big Red’, what a powerhouse, man, downright scary, I think I read that he ran the fastest time, to this day, nby has broken. You guys would have made a gorgous couple. Bernie is okay though.
@ Dani
That news is dismaying, but judging by some of these nature shows, this is not unusual, at all, even though they’re very skilled raptors, no match for all the natural dangers or those posed by human civilization. Depending on the maturity of the chicks one parent could handle it. I used to rescue birds, your usual garden varity, it was tough going for those little ones, if they’re real little, I had to turn them over to the Wildlife guys.
Good night, dear girl, and sleep tight, dream sweet. :) :) :)
Linda in NJ
Hi Zenyatta: Sure hope those thunderstorms haven’t been too scary. Good night and hope you write soon. Love, Linda
Sunny Boyd
P.S.
Your buddy Mike Smith is going to ride Blue Grass in the Derby, just read that in the DRF. The trainer said he was the logical choice. So Go Mike Go.

Thank you Margaret!!! Learned something new today. :)

NOW WHER DID YOU GO?

@ astrid ~
Wow! Gifted looks so happy. I bet he thought his physical powers were gone for good, then suddenly he is reborn and able to go frisking around so happily. He’s really looking strong! Such sweet days for him, realizing the nightmare has really gone, and pure natural joy has come back again. I’m so happy for him! Perhaps he needs an extra name now that he is truly a “gifted” MIRACLE!

@Laura J, Love the name Better Step Aside. Please let us know when he runs, I’ll be sure to watch on TVG or HRTV.
As for Derby favortie….Early on I was a real big Comma to the Top fan, then Mo was such a force and I loved Premier Pegasus. I think I am going back to my Comma to the Top. Sad to read The Factor is out. Both Uncle Mo and The Factor had real issues in their last prep races. If healthy…What a Derby this could have been. So…I am going: Comma To the Top, Dialed In, Archarcharch. At least tonight at 9:30pm PST, could change by the time I wake up in the morning. Sweet Dreams everyone.
S (in san diego)
9:50 pm, just read the MMM article…What the heck…I now have to add him to my top 3 and make it my top 4. If Mr Commons goes…I will have a top 5 of which 3 will be totally sentimental picks. But the Derby has a way of balancing a field very quickly. Good night again :)

NOTICE ALERT!!! I DIDN’T HAVE TO RESPOND BUT I WANTED TOO. THIS POST IS ONLY
TO ANYONE THAT DOESN’T LIKE MY POSTS, PLEASE SKIP THEM!
THE LAST POST WAS WRTTEN AS A PERSONAL REPONSE TO ONLY DJ! I DIDN’T KNOW THAT THERE WERE SO MANY DJs ON THIS SITE. I ONLY REMEMBER ONE.
BUt, I DO APPRECIATE THE KIND WORDS EXPRESSED TO ME AND UNDERSTANING OF THE POST!
IF YOU DIDN’T LIKE IT WHY DID YOU CONTINUE TO READ MY POST PERSONALLY WRITTEN TO DJ AND TELL EVERYONE IF THAT YOU WERE AFFENDED? THAT I DON’T UNDERSTAND! I KNOW THIS IS AN OPEN SITE, I COVERED THAT BY STATING PERSONAL TO. SHAME ON YOU FOR READING IT. IT WAS NOT ADDRESS TO YOU!
JUST THE TOP PART WHERE I SAID HAPPY EASTER TO THE MOSSES, THE SHIRREFFS, BOTH FAMILIES OF BARN 55 & L.E. AND TO THE FAN FAMILY. I MENTION JESUS LOVES YOU AND THAT I LOVE EACH OF YOU TOO! That INCLUDES YOU! I WILL SAY THAT IF THAT OFFENDED YOU TO SAY HAPPY EASTER AND TO SEND LOVE, I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO SAY?
THE ONLY WAY TO SAY THANKS TO DJ WAS TO RESPOND ON THIS SITE PERSONALLY. I’M REALLY THANKFUL FOR HER KIND WORDS.
PLEASE SINCE YOU DID READ IT. MAKE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT I REFFERD TO AND WHAT ZENYATTA MEANS ONLY TO ME. I DID NOT SAY ANYBODY ELSE FELT LIKE ME.
STILL WRITTEN TO DJ I DO NOT APOLOGIZE FOR MY OPINIONS AND FEELINGS FOR ZENYATTA!
LET ME MAKE THIS AS CLEAR AS I CAN!!!
I HAD THE MOST WODERFUL & FORUNATE CHILDHOOD AND LIFE IN GENERAL NOW EXCEPT FOR MY HEALTH ISSUES.
I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A ADVOCATE FOR ANTI-ABUSE OF ANIMALS & CHILDREN FOR A LONG IME
THIS HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH A MARRIAGE! NO HE NEVER HIT ME IN ANYWAY. JUST THREATNED ALOT TO KILL ME! I HAD A MVA(Motor VEHICULAR ACCICENT) SORRY TO OFFEND YOU IF KNOW WHAT A MVA IS! FROM THAT ACCIDENT I STATED I WAS TRIED OF DRS., SURGIES (31 of them, MEDICINE, AND THERAPY( ***NOT MENTAL***) I DON’T KNOW WHY YOU THOUGHT MENTAL, LOOK AT THE ACCIDENT & SURGIES- COMMON SENSE WOULD DICTATE THAT WITH RESONING. IT WAS YEARS OF PT. ( YEARS OF PHYSICAL THERAPY). THE ACIDENT WAS FALLEN A SLEEP FROM WORKING TOO MANY HOURS IN CT( CARDIC/THORAIC) SURGERY!
AFTER 19 YRS &6 MONTHS, I FELT LIKE I COULD NOT FINE ANYTHING TO DO WORTH WHILE.I HAD TO RETIRE FROM NURSING AT AGE 45 Y.O WHICH I ABSOLUTELY LOVED HELPING PEOPLE.
ZENYATTA HELPED ME TRHOUGH BEING ONE OF THE GREATES RACING FILLY OF MY LIFETIME. THE MOSSES & THE SHIRREFFS LET HER HELP OTHER WITH GREAT CAUSES LIKE CA RESEARCH!
THE POST BEFOE THIS ONE. LOOK BACK WHAT WAS IT ABOUT. THE WALK AROUND THE TRACK SHE HAD RACED TO RAISE MONEY FOR CA RESERCH! EVERYBODY THAT HAS HAD CANCER TOUCH THEIR LIFE SHARED THAT ON THIS POST BY DOTTIE. THE ONE BEFORE THIS ONE.
IN SAYING THAT, I AM NOT SPEAKING FOR DOTTIE. EXPLAINING WHAT SHE HAS POSTED. DOTTIE DOES SHARE RACING INFO AND MANY WONDERFUL THOUGHTS ON WHAT ZENYATTA IS DOING IN RETIREMENT,BUT DOTTIE ALSO SHOWS HOW ZENYATTA GIVES BACK TO HER FANS & SCOIETY: TO SHOW HER KINDNESS AND LOVE TO OTHERS & TO SHOW FAN APPRECIOATION, A NINA STATUE. THIS HAS BEEN ONE OF THE MOST DEBATED CONTEST I HAVE EVER HEARD OF IN MY LIFE!( NOW THAT’s SOME REAL APPRECIATION TO ZENYATTA, THE MOSSES AND THE SHIRREFFS!)
NEXT EXAMPLE, A BIG ONE. “THE ZENYATTA LOUNGE” MENTIONED NUMEROUS TIMES ABOUT HOW IT WAS DECORATECD AND HOW THE WOMEN CAME TOGETHER AND HELPED EACH WITH CLASSES & SEWING.
NEXT EXAMPLE- PHOTO- THAT A FAN SENT IN TO SHOW HIS APPRECIATION OF ZENYATTA. A ROOM HE HAD DECORATED
NEXT EXAMPLE-HOW ZENYATTA MET WITH THE PERSON IN THE WHEELCHAIR FOR HER LAST WISH!
I LOVE SEEING THE PICS OF SOPHIE AND THE 2 LARGE POODLES WITH THE NINA STATUE! OF ZENYATTA’S PLANE RIDE, THE STALL WITH ALL THE THINGS THAT FANS HAVE SENT TO THE MOSSES, ESPECIALLY THE CHILDREN’S DRWAING! I HEAR ZENYATTA SAYING “TO CUTE!” Z EATING HER BIRTHDAY CAKE.
DOTTIE THOUGHT WE WOULD LOVE TO SEE ALL THESE THINGS. SO THEY MUST MEAN A LOT TO TMOSSES TOO OR WHY WOULD DOTTIE BOTHER TO SHARE ALL OF THESE SPECIAL THINGS WITH US!
DOTTIE HAS DONE A GREAT JOB EXPLAING VARIUS AREAS OF TRAINING & RACING ALSO Z’S BIRTH CERTIFICATE AND MANY MORE.
I COULD GO ON AND ON!
SO TO THE ONLY DIE-HARD RACING FANS THIS SITE IS MORE THAN JUST A RACING BLOG. AS ONE PERSON QUOTED-IF YOU WANT THAT, THERE are PLENTY OF HORSE RACING SITES to debate and only speak of racing. WE are all humans with feelings and emotions. I love the personal experiencs of meeting Z & other racing stories
ONE IS BLOODHORSE-DEBATE STEVE AND ALL THAT GOES WITH it. NOW THAT IS DRAMA< It's a wonderful site.
SO I HAVE READ ALL OF ZENYATTA'S POSTS FROM THE START AND STARTED POSTING BEFORE HER BIG 20TH RACE. From reading these posts I have more My life has been enrichedby reading these posts of thoughtfulness and love for Zenyatta.
HOW CAN ANY OF YOU SAY, "THIS SITE IS FOR RACING INFO ONLY" BECAUSE OF ZENYATTA RACING CAREER WITH HER OWNERS & HER TRAINER. ZENYATTA IS SO MUCH MORE TO SO MANY PEOPLE. THIS SITE ALLOWS ALL OF HER FAN FAMILY TO EXPRESS THEIR THOUGHTS, EMOTIONS & FEELINGS FOR " THE GREAT ZENYATTA." SO IF THAT OFFENDS YOU, DON'T READ THE POSTS THAT UPSET YOU OR YOU DON'T LIKE THE PERSON. YOU CAN NOT CONTROL WHO POST HERE BUT YOU CAN CONTOL WHAT YOU READ. JUST LIKE WATCHING T.V. CHANGE THE CHANNEL IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT! THERE IS PLENTY OF CHANNELS TO PICK FROM. "LIFE IS TOO SHORT TO BE MADE MISERABLE BY A FEW OR MANY WORDS OF LOVE, APPRECIATION & GRATITUDE FOR ZENYATTA!
ENOUGH OF EXPLAINING! IF YOU STILL DON'T UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF THIS SITE TO SO MANY, YOU PROBALY WON'T.
I'LL POST MY E-MAIL ADDRESS TO THE FANS THAT ZENYATTA MEANS SO MUCH TOO. I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU! Jennybirdage@gmail.com
I WILL TAKE MY OWN ADVISE AND JUST DELETE THE ONES I DON'T WANT TO READ AND NEVER SAY A WORD ABOUT IT ON THIS SITE.
NOW TO THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THIS MESSAGE, A NOTE TO:
My Sweet Lady Zenyatta, who I LOVE dearly!
I hope you are sleeping well now and will be well rested for a big day tomorrow. I am so glad you are Land's End for your security and for being broodmare. The Mosses & The Shirreffs have always put your needs first. I bet it is really humming with all The Derby talk. I hope Mr. Commons is in. That's great for The Mosses. It will be fun to pull for him. A lot of rumors who will be in The Derby. It's just exciting to know it's not that far away. Will you get to listen to it or watch it on T.V.? What a photo that would be. You might get too excited & start racing your gal pals! That would defnetly be "Too Cute!" As you say!
I wanted to share why my post was short today. I rescued a very old Rottie Kia Gracie from Greenville County Shelter, S.C.. I love older dogs & especially old Rotties. I have a Rottie named Sugar(13 y.o.) and little dogs (17). Kia Gracie has bilateral torn ligaments in her hind legs. Just to old for surgery only meds to keep comfortable. Same speed I am, slow moving. Someone asked me why did I get an old dog? Nobody wants them and they are so appreciative for your kindness and love. She is a very sweet dog. Looking forward to who gets chosen for the Nina! I know they will be excited. What an honnor! Good night.
Sending Love & Kisses To You from Alabama, Amanda G.

Don’t worry about it anymore Amanda. You sound like a nice person with a big heart. Better to grow in the heart than the head anyway. Personal posts here are more of an occasion than the norm so your right they can be read or avoided with no harm. Same as with the boring information that can be had anywhere or the short bursts of what some think are a brilliant choice of words but sound to me like lsd trips you have to read several times to figure out. What is not acceptable is to hurt someone who is hurting or hurt someone who is helping. Not to mention the winner of the contest who was made to feel bad even though it was good enough for the owners of this site. Just shake the dust off and keep going on your way.
Aaron
The people that complain after they read something are the same ones that complain after they eat something. As if they were not a part of their decision. Complainers.
Dani
Could this Rags to Riches foal look any happier?

@Dawn Conrad- I waited until the contest was over least I be accused of trying to influence the vote. I wanted you to know that I think the way you handled yourself during all of “this” took my breath away. I keep checking to see if you had responded worried about you even though we have never had a private conversation. You conducted yourself with the utmost grace, class, restraint and elegance. In a nutshell you embodied all that is Zenyatta and from one who tries and often fails I was impressed and inspired by you. Some fans have many times behaved in ways that give us a bad name and don’t do us proud, but from one Huge Zenyatta fan to another YOU-Dawn Conrad did us very, very proud!
Kari Bussell
@Susan in Tn. -Got “it” and thank you very much.
@Amanda Gillian-very gad to read your post. I stand with you. There is a southern expression-Just let it roll off like water off a duck that sums up my feelings about the ones against me. It’s attacks on ones I love and have done nothing do deserve it that get my feathers ruffled. It does however grieve me how cruel people can sometimes be…
Kari Bussell
Dear Zenyatta- I love you far too much to ever-even hint let alone threaten to leave you. I’ve cheered you on and bask in your light since April 2008 and beautiful I am not going anywhere.I hope the storms miss you and you have a wonderful day.

Good Morning Sweet Lady Zenyatta,
I just saw where tornado warnings are in Ky!. I’ll say a prayer for all in the storms path. Had tornados hit close but not my home when I was 5, my family lost eveything except the clothes on our backs from an electrcal storm buring our home. So I do empathize for those who do get hit.
Dottie, so close to picking the Winner! Yeah!! I am pulling for Mr. Commons. Sorry about The Factor not racing and MMM is no ordinary TB. Hope he is well then.
@Lisa J-Thank You so much for answering my question about your horse’s name- “Better Step Aside” Great Name! I want to follow & pull him. Please post his races and updates.
@ Aaron& Kari-good to see your posts! Dawn does have class and miss her posts.
Speaking of missing? Where is Abigail- the owner of “The Vault” Great historical info site on TB racers.
@Shari-Keep us posted on the children’s love of Zenyatta. The library site is really nice. The egg drawings were so sweet!
QUESTION FOR EVERYONE????
I have always wanted to know how does a TB get their name? Some I see, like MM to his son MMM? I know why Zenyatta got her name. Laura, did you help name “Better Step Aside”? That will be such a great name in the call of a race especially if “No I Won’t” was the other horse, like the race last year of the 2 horses about the “The Wife Has”. Can’t remember the names exactly but it was just so funny. They had exactly reversed names! Does anyone remember the names of the horses?
Kari- The saying is great. Being from the south, we do have great sayings. I feel the same way. I’d never leave Zenyatta’s site. The Zenyatta Experience is to great! As a child we had 3 horses. Dale was my best friend as a child I thought I was the luckiest kid in the world. Now I live through Zenyatta, The Shirrefs & The Mosses amazing stories they so graciously share & all the wonderful stories of TB owners and the ones who work with the the horses. I LOVE THIS SITE AND it reminds me of those childhood memories of my love of horses. I’m SO THANKFUL FOR DOTTIE posting. Talk about real class. All of Z’s people are very special & in a class by themselves. Sendig Hugs & Kisses To You,Z, From Alabama With Love, Amanda G.

@Amanda Gilliland–Bless you for adopting “a very old Rottie”! You are a very special lady.
