Good Morning,
Dottie and John thought this would be fun to share with you. Here are Giacomo’s Jockey Club papers. The reason these are REALLY SPECIAL is the 2nd line on the back of his papers have the following information recorded in his OFFICIAL RECORD:
Date Won: 5/7/05
Net Value to Winner: 1,639,600
Type of Race: STAKE
Distance: 1 1/4
Name of Stake or Handicap: “THE KENTUCKY DERBY” Grade 1
Name of Track: Churchill Downs
Racing Secretary or By: Doug Bredar
Now this is truly TOO CUTE! The Kentucky Derby…WOW!
On the front, you see several markings and notes added to his papers. In the comments and responses, many of you have asked what these things mean. Basically, they pertain to health requirements being noted when a horse travels to various states. Giacomo ran in California, Kentucky, Maryland and NY. The NYRA (New York Racing Association) put their tag / stamp at the top of the papers. California usually places theirs by the marking details. Different states have different procedures and requirements and in our sport all of these details must be met at all times. It is what is best for ALL!
Since it is that time of year, and Derby Fever is in the air, MY TEAM thought this would be FUN for you to see. Not many papers have this information recorded on them! YEAH, GIACOMO!
Have a special day!
With Love,
Hugs to All~

I too remember that Derby. I wasn’t into racing then (wouldn’t be until 2007 w/Rags to Riches pulling me in) but I always watched the Triple Crown because it seemed so exciting and friends had parties for all of them. I had never placed a bet before but I really liked Giacomo’s coloring and thought his face was cute. But the big seller was I learned he was named after Sting’s son and I am a HUGE Sting fan. I figured it was a sign so I had a friend place a bet for me. I remember jumping up and down and twirling around and being a general brat as well when he won since I was the only one of my friends that had placed a bet on him. Nice chunk of change! That was really cool to me as well. I loved the video of him at Adena Springs. What a rascal. He definitely has a great personality and a sense of humor about him. And I still love his interesting and wonderful coloring. So it’s really neat to see his papers. I imagine seeing Kentucky Derby on them still brings back some of the same excitement for the Mosses and Dottie you and John and of course all at Barn 55. Very cool. Thank you for that.

Gallant Man missed the win in the 57 Derby. I had to check it out. I was only 3. I really started watching in’60 when Carry Back won. I’ve only missed one Gato Del Sol). My money was on him though.
Good luck on yr date with Bernie next week Z.

@Lizzy – thanks for sharing =-) I never had another child, only my one “miracle”. But sometimes one’s enough.
I had a post “awaiting moderation” too, that never made it through. I don’t think anybody really moderates them, I think it’s some kind of rule that doesn’t allow certain things. My post, for instance, had an email address in it. Later I realized I had never seen an email address on this page…

@lizzy: I caught it, Lizzy, (loved that link; thanks) and kind of took it for granted it was Mario!
@Saschja Marseguerra: That was such an interesting link. Thank you for giving us another source to learn something new.
@Everyone of Zenyatta’s friends: I just love reading all your comments and “newsy stuff,” and I love being able to write in someone’s else’s diary!! Tee Hee.

Good day to you Zen, and John and Dottie! Thanks for Giacomo papers. Really enjoyed learning more about the papers.
Astrid, thanks so much for the youtube video of G, Giacomo 2005 Kentucky Derby Winner …. what a wonderful story about Giacomo at the stallion farm, and beautiful video of him. Now I love Giacomo too!
Zen, do you know about the baby carrots? They are one of my favorite snacks too, like Giacomo. Such a great size.
I hope your day is terrific. I’m out in Marin County California and we’re having a record breaking warm day today of 80 degrees. Isn’t it great to have spring time here!
love and hugs to you my sweet queen. looking forward to you next date with Bernie.. you lucky girl!

@Jan (quote: I think John’s personality and spirit is in each and every horse he trains) This is so true!
.
I just had to repost this:
@thepartner43 (quote: I have fond memories of Giacomo and became a Shirreff’s fan forever. Sunrise at Pimlico in ’05, John Shirreffs was the ONLY trainer to bring his horse along the rail after his gallop so that all the fans could see him. I have some wonderful pictures, but the memory of this unusual generosity towards the fans has always stuck with me. It’s such a shame that other trainers just don’t get it)
.
so true, so true & well said.
.
I can’t find another post that stopped me in my tracks. Someone mentioning that Z’s Mommy had to have conceived in May to have Zenny in April. Made me pause and think….things happen for a reason. Maybe she’s more like her Mom than we realize. Like Z coming into her own (developing a little late), this is similar, when she’s ready……
.
Looks like mud baths are in your future the next couple of days. <33333

@Linda J
Yes I have seen it called the Wood Memorial also. Looks like Uncle MO
is also slotted for the Florida Derby
but they really want the Wood as it there is one week difference in the race.

@lizzy
Good info about Z and her mom catching.
Did not put that together, but human
daughters cycle and have menopause etc…
much like their mother.
So maybe this is not so “tragic”. LE just
wanted to start early so they had some time.
Thanks for the insight.

Zenny-Think the sun will ever shine again? I thought we had whipped winter but you’ll probably agree that it’s back full force. I hope you have a sunny day despite the dismal weather. Love you
Diane
I wonder if Zazu will be running in the Kentucky Oaks!
J Smith
@ signofthetimes & Linda J Uncle Mo is running in the Wood and his cousin and stable mate, Stay Thirsty, is in the FL Derby on Sunday. You can get info on both of them, previous races etc. on Uncle Mo’s new website. Stay Thirsty is a son of Bernardini, as is To Honor & Serve, who is also in the FL Derby. Hmmmm, who to root for? Both of them are on the top ten KY Derby list too. At least, I think Honor is on it, I know Thirsty is. I wish they could all win!

For many years, I have watched the triple crown races, and, more recently, Breeder’s Cup races. I never bet – just watch for the thrill. “Please, God, bring ’em all home safely”, is my mantra.
I remember Giacomo’s win, as if it was yesterday. I must say, I was rooting for Afleet Alex all the way, due to the heartrending story associated with him. I will never forget his horrific stumble to his knees, in the Preakness. Time stood still for that brief second, in which it then seemed as if an angel, (the little girl, Alex?) reached down, and lifted this horse back up. His win was so very emotional….
Time flies. Tomorrow begins another month, and a very special birthday!

Dear Zenyatta…we are supposed to get A LOT of snow here in New England tomorrow with power outages, so I wanted to send you a Happy Birthday wish a day early. I look forward to the next 7 that you shall celebrate.
I read an article today from the Albany Times that your stall is still empty & your “dear John” had nice comments to make about how he feels about you…is there any way somewhere they can create a place for fans to visit when they have to start using your stall again? You deserve your own special place, but you will always be in our hearts.
XOXO
Sue Noel
@ Dawn Conrad-Thanks for the shout-out!!
I have always treasured those times in my memory. Actually have some black and white photos of those visits–the California ones are ok but the one’s from Lexington are so faded you can barely see them. They are very clear in my memories though!! Hope all is going well with you,I always look forward to reading your posts!!

@JsMITH and Amanda: Love the animal revolution..My red haired poodle has her own FB, and her “uncle” and “aunties” talk to her. I love it…animals are the best people in the world.

Dottie and John always present very interesting information. I really enjoy learning so much more about horses and racing while reading this diary. Thank you! Love to Zenyatta and all of her team.

@deana dameron and all: Count me in on sending a donation to Old Friends in honor of Z and Team Z on the occasion of Z’s birthday. It would be great if they could buy that farm for retired racehorses. I think I’ll try to get the address to send it directly to Old Friends and spare Dottie extra work – what do you all think?
Happy Birthday, Z! –Trina

At the time, I thought that was the best ride I ever saw a jockey, your Mike, give a horse. Then Calvin Borel comes along bouncing his horse, Mine That Bird, off the rail to win the K Derby in the slop. These jockeys ride horses like fighter pilots fly jets (remember Top Gun?)! Jockeys are among the very best athletes in the world, and they have no fear. I have the utmost respect for them.

Giacamo is a beautiful horse. We had the privilege of visiting him at Adena Springs last October, and took a short video of him while we were there you might like to see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPIc8fEM204
And here’s a really interesting video about him produced by Blood-Horse:
