Happy March Madness to Everyone!
As you all know, I am a huge SPORTS FAN! I have always loved competition and being an athlete…so I admire people who do the WORK it takes to perform at a HIGH LEVEL in athletic competition. I love SPORTS! March is particularly fun as it is the beginning of March Madness in College Basketball. Dottie printed out the GRID for me to follow the games. What a great time!
The teams who play around my BARN 55 home are UCLA and USC. San Diego State seems to be a team to really follow this year. They look to be one of the top contenders. Many sportscasters feel they can make it to the FINAL FOUR. Their campus is located a bit down the freeway from Del Mar where I’ve raced in the summer. Such FUN!
Now, living in Kentucky I have noticed that this is a real BASKETBALL STATE. Between the University of Kentucky Wildcats and the University of Louisville Cardinals, there is always some great basketball to follow. So, in your free time, print your grid…and enjoy the games.
I’ll be watching and following MARCH MADNESS with all of my friends here at Lane’s End. I know Dottie and John will be doing the same at home! Since I’m a HORSE and don’t have an Alma Mater to cheer for…I will be following my HOME teams…both CA and KY. Good Luck to each participant in the Tournament! Work hard and remember to have fun with it!
On another note, I wanted to take a few moments and answer some of your questions. I asked my Lane’s End friends about LIFE IS SWEET! She has not foaled yet. Due soon…but no baby yet. I’ll keep you posted. She is in foal to Smart Strike! Hooves Crossed for my dear friend and her soon-to-be foal!
For those of you who inquired about the Diary Entry numbers, the first set went from # 1-100. This series is beginning with #201 and moving forward. I just wanted to set this group apart from the first one. It is an entirely different series to capture a new chapter in my life. For those of you who asked about this…you did not miss any of them. You are TOO CUTE and VERY SWEET to ask!
Also, I’d like to thank Mathea Kelley for the piece she did in THE BLOODHORSE about ME titled “ZENYATTA LOOKING GOOD”! The photos are fabulous, in my opinion. (Blush, Blush!) I think I look really PLAYFUL in my cute snowy whiskers close-up and then very sophisticated and dignified in several of the other photos. I hope you enjoy them!

We are working on the Z pins and continuing to work out things on the web-site to make it EASIER and FUN for you. We are trying hard to FIX the INTERNET/FACEBOOK problem for you. Thanks for your patience!
Have a wonderful day! Get out your grids and be picking YOUR TEAMS! Who do you think will make it to the FINAL FOUR…and then WIN it ALL? SUCH FUN!
With love,
Hugs to ALL~

Oh WOW! I just checked my FACEBOOK PAGE. I have over 69,000 FRIENDS. I am SO EXCITED!

YIPEE!!!! Another buckeye!!!!! Go Bucks !!!!
Got my bachelors there and had some family
In KY but was clueless as a youngster about the
Bluegrass and Thoroughbreds.

In Marthea’s photos-which are great phtographically-Zenyatta looks-to me-depressed compared to when she was racing. What does her team think?
HappyHarriet
Dear Queen Zenyatta –
.
You would get along really well in my family where each of the men have their own trophy cases filled to the brim with sports memorabilia and the girls have their ice skates and ballet shoes as their badges of honor! It’s great to channel energy into healthy competitiveness, and no one competes and thrills like you do, Zenyatta, our Horse of a Lifetime, the Queen!
.
Oh my – I have to have that snowy whiskers picture as well as the four of you gals strolling along the farmland lane at Lane’s End! LOVE THOSE PICTURES, and the montage linked to us yesterday (I think it was) and all the other articles and helpful information. I still consider this the Zenyatta School of Equine Studies, with our Divine Dottie the Dean of All!
.
I think the “Dairy” vs. “Diary” is a freudian slip! Now that Zenyatta is “with child”, I rather like the “Dairy” title and it reminds me of my Grandfather’s Dairy Farm – another place where there wasn’t a bad vibe in the place.
.
Missing Pirate Queen and all the girls mightily. I hope their connections allow us some information on their Mommy status soon, and allow us to follow them. We’ve grown so fond of the Big Four!
.
Horse Hugs and Kisses to All ~~ HH

Bless the 50 utility worker manning the reactors
In Japan. Thanks Zenny for all of the wonderful
Updates. Dottie you are the best. You also have a
Wonderful talented son and of course a wonderful
Husband. Love the look on your face with the frozen
Whiskers. Oh well this is something new and fun.
Keep that embryo warm. Don’t think the untrained
Eye would be able to see the embryo at 15 days.

@Saralee
She is let down. When she was racing she was
Wired all the time. She looks like a very happy
Relaxed horse enjoying the BBF she never had.
It is OK that she is not racing!!!
Pat
Barbara Wood, that is beautiful comment.

Your pictures were lovely, and whoever said you never take a bad picture is right. Thanks for clarifying the number assigned to the posts here; it was a bit confusing. You do whatever you want, Zenyatta; it’s your life and we are just lucky to be living it with you through the thoughts, words, pictures and all who make it possible for all of us to still enjoy you. Thank you for the information on Life Is Sweet (Wow Smart Strike), should be a great foal….Happy Day…and sports to you, Z.
Pat
I am going for ride with Zenyatta and Mike.. My bedtime relaxation.

Hey Z, looks like we need to congratulate the Australian sprinter Black Caviar. I just saw on bloodhorse that she is 10 for 10 (undefeated!! sound familiar, my girl!!)and she ran the fastest time in the Newmarket Handicap in its 138th running!! Sounds pretty impressive, huh?
Lee White
SUGGESTION TO DOTTIE WHO DOES SUCH A WONDERFUL JOB KEEPING ALL OF Z’S FANS UPDATED ON HER LIFE..SINCE MANY OF HER FANS ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH BREEDING AND FOALNG IF DOTTIE COULD POST SOME PICTURES OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF A FOAL AT DIFFERENT STAGES IT W OULD BE VERY INTERESTING TO THOSE WHO ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH THIS. I HAVE RAISED HORSES AND HAD MANY MARES BRED AND HAVE WATCHED AND ASSISTED IN THE BIRTH OF MANY FOALS AND IT IS TRULY WONDERFUL. MAYBE SOME OF THE READERS COULD GIVE THEIR INPUT IF THEY WOULD LIKE THIS DONE AND MAYBE DOTTIE COULD DO IT. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK DOTTIE.

Love the photos of you getting a bath. Can really
Empathize LE washing a large horse like you.
Lots of work. My 17 hand TB had fungus in the
Summer so we had to bath him three times a
Week to keep it under contol. It was sooooo itchy.

I think the frozen whiskers picture is really the most popular Zenny– It is mine for sure…A HUGE THANK-YOU–!!! DOTTIE — you are such a great animal lover and you express what Zenyatta thinks and says with so much heart and soul that it makes it IMPOSSIBLE not to BELIEVE–same as with Santa Claus– Of Course Zenyatta speaks– to those who choose to BELIEVE and LISTEN. Watch those games Big Z and sweet dreams. Love Ya, Janet C
Pamela

Hi Zenyatta. Love your picture on top and just adored the pictures that Mathea Kelly took of you. I had mixed feelings about seeing you with ice on your wiskers – don’t like seeing you so cold. You are so beautiful and so photogenic!! We pray each day for the human as well as the horse victims in Japan. I printed out Ensign’s report on where the horses are located in Japan, especially worried about Azeri. Can’t wait to hear about Life is Sweet and her brand new baby. We love you so, please stay toasty, eat well for two or three, have fun with your BBFs, you Angel in Disguise.

You are beautiful in all those pictures Zenny. Thanks for including a link to Bloodhorse. And thanks for updating us on LIFE IS SWEET. You’re so thoughtful.

Dear Queen-Z & Team-Z,
You are sooooo photogenic and Mathea is an amazing photographer!! You two are made for each other.
Enjoy your B-ball; I’m rooting for Cal State/San Diego.
Take care and stay happy. Contented mares make the best Mamas!!

I love you big Mamma and Queen of the track. Just got home from work and have to be back at 8pm but I just had to check in! SWEET DREAMS ZENNY!

Regarding mares’ milk, the great Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy retreated to the Caucuses (I believe it was) for several weeks to consume nothing but fermented mares’ milk whenever he felt poorly. In his novels, Tolstoy describes horses so vividly that they all but come alive.

@LeeWhite, the link to which Signofthetimes refers above is on Post #94, in the middle of the diary entry. Check it out.

Beautiful Zenyatta, A hugh thank you to Mathea Kelley, Lane’s End and Bloodhorse for the amazing photos of you. Each one is so special that I cannot select a favorite although the snowy nose looks like you got caught in the cookie jar. You are so special and there has never been a bad photo of you. Many thanks to your family and Lane’s End for taking such great care of you, the love keeps growing. Wish my arms could stretch to KY to give you a hug.

Good Morning, Zenyatta
well, it’sa beautiful in the neighborhood, I know you’re out in the fresh air, prancing around in your paddock, cherry-picking those tasty little blue blades of grass. Yum yum :) :)
It looks like those reactors aren’t going to be cooled, I guess they’re looking at a melt-down in Japan. They better rub the fat man’s belly now for lotsa good luck.
Well, dear girl,
I guess no more snowy whiskers for you until your girth is so plump ready to burst. Have a great day :) :) :)

Kentucky basketball and horse racing in the spring. March Madness and Derby preps. It’s a great time of year. So who did Dottie and John pick to go all the way in the NCAA!?!
Diane Selbe
When we first started tracking your amazing career, we always looked forward to the next event. We were employed and life was good then. The economy caught up to us and my husband was downsized throught a ruthless pay cut of tenured employees. Through the tough stuff, we always anticipated your next milestone. Thankfully, Jerry had the heart and wisdom to retire you sound, and at the top of your game. Now we have more to look forward to. The arrival of your foal. Thanks for being an inspiration during some dark times here at the homefront.

good morning, gorgeous Zenny!! The pics are stunning, but who’s surprised?? : )
I love the one of you walking with your gal pals down the lane – that’s really sweet. Go JAYHAWKS!!

Dearest Zenyatta,
I am so glad you explained about the number system on your diary…I was one of the silly people worrying about where you went, We just don’t want to miss anything because We all love you soooo.
We all want to know about your mommy time, just as we loved your racing time. You are blessed By God and loving you has been a blessing to all of your caretakers and your fans. I am a woman and I can’t high hoof you but I can say Thank God for you and everything you have done, and everything you will do. Thank you for it all.
ZENYATTA I LOVE YOU:):):)
Suzanne
Zenny, you looked so peaceful and happy in those photos. It is so nice to see you relaxing with other horses. I miss seeing you on the racetrack carrying Mike Smith and the Mosses’ silks, but I am so thankful that you retired safe and sound and that you are carrying your first baby! Enjoy March Madness, and happy St. Patrick’s Day to you, dear girl! No Guiness for you, but you can celebrate by enjoying a bit ‘o the green grass. :)
