Not only does Sergio de Sousa keep Cozmic One happy and healthy at his farm, he goes out of his way to share updates with us. Here’s a glimpse into Coz’s birthday morning at De Sousa Stables.
The derby will be exciting for sure! I have my favorites but with a race like the Derby, luck is a big factor.
I am home-bound caring for a litter of 6. Pepper had 7 (4 boys 3 girls) on Thursday. Lost one boy (cleft palate) so she is now raising 6 beautiful babies. One is so small, just 7 oz at birth, I am bottle feeding him puppy formula every 8 hours. He has finally regained birth weight, 7.5 oz this morning! Exhausting!
Lynn
Dear Lynn,
Congrats to Pepper and you on the joyous arrival of puppies❣️ What happy sounds you must be hearing! Sorry that one was lost due to cleft palate — poor little guy, RIP. Good luck with the bottle feeding for the littlest one. You are doing a great job!
Woofs and Love
Dear Judy,
Thanks for the heads-up!
It will be broadcast at 11 AM on FS2, also.
This will be the first time that all will be in one gate — no auxiliary gate.
Should be a fairer start for all. Safe and sound racing for all participants!

RIP John T. Ward who died Saturday. He was the trainer of Monarchos, winner of the 2001 Kentucky Derby and 1999 Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner, Beautiful Pleasure (1999 Eclipse Award for older champion mare) among lots of other outstanding achievements in the Kentucky horse racing world.
He was 75.
Condolences to family and friends. ?
There is one derby I thought there was access use of the whip. It was near the finish when Big Brown was in the lead Eight Belles was a good 2nd she wasn’t going to catch him and no one was going to pass her. Her jockey kept using his whip. I thought way more than was necessary. And we know what happened to her after the finish.
My heart broke, too. It looked like he was going to make it for a while there and then everything just fell to pieces. What a valiant warrior he was!
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Kathy and Shirlee,
It sure looked promising for a while, but alas, we lost the brave beautiful Barbaro. That was such a tragic outcome.
RIP Barbaro, losing you broke so many hearts, but we will never forget you. ?
Hugs and Love
For the third time, I will try to post something. Since there seems to be a problem getting through, I won’t even try to repeat them as I pretty much agree with everyone else. I have to agree with Barbara I cant help but root for Hot Rod Charlie. The Derby will be much fun this year because besides having my dear Tommy sitting next to me I will have a black Chihuahua mix we’ve named Feather sitting on my lap and she can yip for her favorite. I really don’t know how to post pictures, but if I can find someone who does I’ll send a photo. RIP Barbaro. The last time I saw him he was standing up and seemed to doing well. Then I had to move and was between TV’s. What a shock when I heard the news. I saw his race as well as Eight Belles. That was quite a shock when I saw her go down also. YIKES!
Exciting Race 9 on turf at Belmont Thursday (6f,claiming for 3 yr+)!
Our Destiny (4 yr. old gelding by Freud) won at odds of 37 to 1! Excellent ride by Nik Juarez. This handsome chestnut beat the favorite with some gas left in the tank. Congrats to Our Destiny, Nik Juarez, trainer Wayne Potts and all connections!
Cheers❣️
I saw Harley yesterday. Of course right now Lava Man is the King of Churchill Downs!
Happy Oaks Day to everyone. Got the hat going on this one too. 3 Stonestreet horses-2 by Curlin. The favorite is a Curlin bred by Stonestreet and Flatter, a Claiborne stallion, has 2 in the race. One of them is second in the odds. Oh well, with this many, one of them is bound to end up hitting the board. I like Stonestreet because of Barbara and the love and care she showed Rachel. Some other owners would have kept trying to breed her but Barbara put her health first.
Good luck and safe trip to all the horses today, tomorrow and always.
With King Fury out, there is more room in the hat! Really pleased with the outcome of the Oaks! Curlin’s daughter first and Flatter’s second. They had the odds right on this one.
This bit of news is on Zellda’s FB-Ebby delivered a big, beautiful almost black colt this past week. There are some pictures with more info. This is her fourth baby, I believe.
Today, Lane’s End treated us to a nearly six minute video of our Queen, out in her pasture with her pasture pal. Z was covered in mud and was enjoying begging for more cookies. She was hamming it up but when her pal got near she pinned her ears back. Luckily, her pal is the passive one. I believe one of the two gals, was Alys behind the camera and the narrator. Too funny! This was on LE FB.
I saw that Mike pulled up Windmill in the 8 Belles race. I hope she is alright. She is owned by Mr. Porter. He is a good owner!
Hope this link works. Once you have it, it’s the top one on the far left. Click on it and you should be able to view. Z is seriously into her treats. ??
Love and Hugs beautiful girl, JB
Judy and Lindal,
Thanks for the video of Zenyatta. She really likes her treats and looks wonderful.
Hope Windmill is okay. I am a big fan of Mr. Porter as he puts the health of his horses first. Songbird was a real favorite.
Happy Derby Day to everyone. Safe trip to all the horses and jockeys.
Happy Derby Day!
Congrats to Malathaat and her connections. Great photos of Uncle J and Irad giving congrats.
Safe and sound for all. Poor Fury running a fever and is out. Get well buddy.
Have a great Derby Day!
Dear Neighbor Ann,
Thanks for this twitter link! Kendrick is such a great guy — his happy demeanor is infectious.
I really enjoyed this entire thread, too. Lots of great scenes and remarks.
Good to see Rosie Napravnik again, also.
Congrats to Uncle Johnny on his Oaks win with Malathaat and his Derby win with Medina Spirit. Happy for him. Well BB did it again!
Impressive second place and third place finishes by Mandaloun and Hot Rod Charlie. EQ made up a lot of ground to finish fourth after a hard bump with Rock Your World at the start. Hope they all came back OK. Love and Hugs, JB
WOW! what a race. Even though Charlie only got third I’m very happy for him. Medina Spirit was also on my list and I admit I really liked the name and was hoping he would be able to grab second or third. Did you see the race before the Derby? It was declared a dead heat which I had never actually seen in all my years watching horse racing. Let’s just hope everybody came back safe and sound and we can see them in a couple weeks tine in the Preakness.
Yes Martha, that race was the Old Forester Bourbon Turf Classic.
WOW, what a finish that was!! I was pulling for Colonel Liam, the dark gray.
Congrats to both winners: Colonel Liam with Irad aboard and trainer Todd Pletcher, and to Domestic Spending with Flavien aboard and trainer Chad Brown! A dead heat — who would have thought? Congrats to all connections, too.

Also, congrats to Smooth Like Strait with Umberto Rispoli up and trainer Michael McCarthy on their 3rd place behind the two winners.
Cheers❣️
Another round of cheers to Umberto Rispoli on winning Race #4, an Allowance-Optional Claiming race, aboard First Premio trained by Mark Casse.
I am glad he got to ride several mounts this weekend.
Hope Queen Z and all her fans have a lovely first weekend in May❣️

Hearty congratulations to Medina Spirit and all disconnections in the Derby and also Malathaat and all her connections in the Oaks. Bob Baffert must be walking on air!
Hearty Congratulations to all the winners at Churchill Downs!
Congrats and sympathy to all my picks as well❣️ I have a soft spot for the grays, but apparently Lady Luck was not impressed today (except for Colonel Liam). :-)

Hope everyone finished in good condition. Shout-out to Whitmore who almost made it but had to settle for third in the Churchill Downs Stakes.
Another shout-out to Hog Creek Hustle for getting fourth in the Derby —
cannot imagine giving that name to a beautiful creature, but he has done well with it!
On to Pimlico!

Oops!
Please excuse my goof — Hog Creek Hustle finished fourth in the Churchill Downs Stakes (behind Whitmore). I knew he wasn’t in the Derby but somehow I managed to type the wrong race.

Congrats to BB and Medina Spirit. I do think BB and Tom Brady have crossed over to the dark side! Don’t get upset. That is a joke.
Sorry for Essential Quality. He had a horrible trip! Hope all of them came back okay and really happy for Kendrick and Bourbonic. They didn’t finish last and was in the pack. I do hope Kendrick gets another chance at the Derby.
What about Johnny V? Won the Oaks and Derby and several other big races on both days.
Marshall, I agree. That is a horrible name for that poor horse!
Dear Z Fans:
This is the Derby City Distaff from Churchill yesterday. Just had to share this replay with you. Gamine is truly one special filly. We love them all, but this girl fought to win impressively after a bad stumble at the start. Amazing win. Love and Hugs, JB
