Not only does Sergio de Sousa keep Cozmic One happy and healthy at his farm, he goes out of his way to share updates with us. Here’s a glimpse into Coz’s birthday morning at De Sousa Stables.
Umberto will have other chances. This happens to all jockey’s during their careers. The name of the game is winning! It is a business and it is not always fair. Wishing all jockeys’ good luck and safe rides always. Mike had a sensational ride on one of Mr. Porter’s new horses, trained by Papa Mandela, Royal Ship.
Hope Skydiver is okay. I have not seen anything about her since the race.
Mike has quite a record with Mr. Porter’s horses-Songbird! If I had a Derby horse, he is one I would want on it. Either him or Johnny V. Who would you all pick to ride your horse?
Cold weather and snow coming here. It was 70 yesterday and a hard freeze and snow tonight! All of you all stay safe and warm.
Mikey, Uncle Johnny or Joel R. But I don’t think I could deal with the risks involved in racing. I’d have to keep my horses as pets on the farm with Charlie.
Got to hit the lottery so I can open a TB rescue.? I can dream. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Ann:
Just read this. Do you think the riding crop should be totally banned or just limited to number of strikes? Saw a video where Mikey feels the use of the crop is necessary some of the time for safety reasons. The Monmouth jockeys may agree with that assessment.
Tough call; 100 pound jockey trying to navigate a 1000 pound horse.
I think I’m for limiting the crop strikes to 3 maybe and then, only if the horse is in contention to be in the top four and just showing the crop to the horse otherwise.
Some jockeys do use the whip excessively, so I think there has to be set rule to protect our beloved horses.
Love and Hugs, JB

Judy,
I wish that more tracks would make firm rules about the whip but after watching so many races on Fox Sports this last year, I can see why it could be needed to control the horse. Just want excessive whipping stopped. If you are on a horse that is clear cannot win or hit the money, quit whipping! I have never cared for Victor after what he did to AP at the Derby. Noticed after that he was very careful with the stick. As far as saying it doesn’t hurt the horse, if it doesn’t hurt, why use it?? I worry about He Who Cannot Be Named because his jock seems very fond of the whip.
On an upbeat note: Those Curlins are really showing up for the Oaks and the Derby! You know I never saw a Curlin I didn’t like! Also, like Mike and Midnight Bourbon together!
Agree with you totally on use of the whip and single regulatory rule AT ALL TRACKS. Also, that Victor has seemed less inclined to over whip after the backlash from his derby ride on American Pharoah.
I like Mike and MB too. Also like Bernie’s Bourbonic, He Who Cannot Be Named and Hot Rod Charlie (because of my Charlie). Then there’s Essential Quality, Rock Your World, Highly Motivated, etc., etc.
Can’t pick just one. Pulling names out of a hat might work. ???
Judy,
I would be delighted with Bourbonic winning. A Calumet homebred with Kendrick riding. It would be wonderful to see Calumet back in the winners circle and Kendrick does seem to have a magic charm when it comes to their longshot horses.
