(((Coz))) … the first one is behind him and hopefully he’ll move forward just fine and continue to “learn the ropes.” So proud of him. He looked magnificent out there. He’ll figure it out and he has a wonderful, patient trainer. I do wish Mike was his regular rider.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Coz
So proud of you. Listen its OK. It was your first race. No harm in being last. Your so young. You have the best trainer. He’ll help you Coz. Lots to learn. You’ll get better and even if time passes and you don’t want to do this, that OK too. The Rearing up does worry me a bit. I had one horse that did that and it scared me so bad. He almost went over backwards with me on him once and I never got on him again. His name was Big Boy. Be so careful Coz. I saw one do it at Keeneland once on TV and that puts terrible fear in me. He went over. We love ya Coz be safe.
One thing I wish John would do if you go back to Belmont. I wish he would let Javiar Castellono ride you. I absolutely cherish what he has done with my Night Prowler.. I like Victor but I sure wish you could have Javiar or Mike Smith ride you.
Love Ya Coz.

Appearances are deceiving and willfully suggestive. At the first sign of trouble, stand still. Don’t jump to conclusions, because they are nearly always negative.
Create within yourself a place of harmony. You may not feel centered and poised, but speak the words anyway. Say to yourself, “Be Still. Steady.” Peace can pass all understanding.
A troubled mind is little different from a strained muscle-it hurts. But stand still and let wisdom come in and do its perfect work.
If all would talk and then do as you have done, the sun of peace would shine forever.

Happy Birthday, JudyB. Thanks for the news of Upstart. I’m still hoping for a KD win for him. Anything can happen, and he’s a friend of the Beast. The Beast is plotting his next move. Think that he may stay in NY for spring and head to Saratoga this summer. Same for Overthespeedlimit. Big Trouble is still on the disabled list as far as I know.

Maybe the horse does not like crowds. So he hangs back, way back. He can learn the other way to escape the crowd…..get way in front.
What would happen if he did a workout with his mother beside him on the track? Hum.

Dear Coz, wish you would get to Keeneland this fall. Hint, Hint you would be close to Mom. Hey Javiar rides there. Just hoping.

Javier is based in New York. He is only riding at the Keeneland spring meet because his agent has found mounts for him there. He will ride anywhere like most US jockeys.

Good for this horse. He’s trained and owned by a lady if I’m not mistaken?
Rosemary McCauley
I thought Coz did pretty well yesterday considering it was his first start. He looked like Zenyatta when he gave them all 10-11 lengths head start. I thought his move was very much like his Mom and it looked for a while like he was going to go on with it but he decided for some reason not to. In my opinion he will improve once he figures it out and I look forward to seeing him run again (although sounds like it will be long distance viewing) but any viewing will be anticipated.
Peggy Buffington
Hi, Rosemary…..I’m wondering why no one on this forum seems to be able to write what they saw happening yesterday? Let me just give you my take on Coz’s race and you can agree, disagree or agree to disagree! The colt has been in training for almost 2 years, so, no, I don’t think he learned anything from galloping along 15 lengths behind a mediocre field of colts and going back to the barn. Only people like the Moss’s could afford to keep one in training that long without starting, by the way. On to his ‘race’. Coz broke decently and wanted to go on with it, but for some reason, Victor decided that wasn’t his plan. Coz would’ve been in the hunt if he’d been let go, or even slightly encouraged….but that didn’t happen. Then instead of just being behind the field, Victor allowed him to drift farther and farther off the frontrunners, until he was called 15 lengths behind. He began to allow the colt to run at about the 1/2 mile pole, but, of course, the others had arrived there some time before and they were running, too! Coz made up some ground between the quarter pole and the eighth with Victor spanking his butt every jump. But, again, it was too little, too late and impossible for the colt to reach the front. Some need to realize all horses don’t want to come from waaay out of it. Some prefer to race near the lead or on it. Does anyone remember Seattle Slew coming from out of the clouds? No? Well, neither do I. And Coz has him for a relative. How about Secretariat? Nope. Winning Colors? Nada. There are ‘girls’ and ‘boys’ who come to play on the front part of races, too. This is an outstanding colt in every way. Gorgeous, since the day he was born. Straight and true, big and muscular, and all a race horse needs to be. Now, he just needs a chance to be one, on his own terms, not his Moms’….
Terry Crow
Peggy–I was not able to see the race live but I feel I have now after reading your analysis. We do not know what type instructions John gave Victor so we do not know if they were followed or not. Many races early in a horse’s career are learning experiences for horse, rider AND trainer.
maureen ph[llips
Dear Peggy,
Good day and thankyou so much for that write up as I agree with everything you have said about first Prince Cozmic One. From the day he was born all he wanted to do was run that at a point, the Queen could not even keep up with him. He has grown to be a very fine muscular athlete and I still believe in his abilities to be a great race horse. We should allow him to show us his style and see where that would lead.
Reading your write up reminded me of me little nephew who is built like the consummate athlete and a fine one too at every sport he played, but sometimes he gets to the field and just decides that his not going to do a thing which is always very frustrating for the coach who can see his talent and not sure what to do with him, But now, I know what it is, The week he feels he has not had time for himself and been subjected to endless practices he just decides to rebel and do nothing. There has to be a fine line between training too much and training enough. First Prince is born to run we should find a way to let him be him and run like the wind. He is head strong like his mom was but instead of trying to break the Queen they worked with her and all was well. His dad always had a calm disposition. So, the only thing I think should be changed in his training is to Let him show us how he wants to run, give him some free will some control.
He will be fine, I have not a doubt. There is no reason for him not to be. In his fathers first race, his connections where so disappointed because they knew they had a fine athlete and when they figured out how to handle him it was like ‘Breaking sticks’ and he won every other race he was in except for the Breeders cup when Invisor beat him by a head but a very good race.
We should all keep the faith and our boy will be just fine.
Have a wonderful restful weekend. It is always well at Z Nation.
My last thought, they should allow the Queen race with him and show him what its all about. LOL .

Rosemary–You have seen races from the back of a TB and your opinions are respected. Too bad John has not given you a leg up so we could all learn something

Sure have missed you, Zenny, and everyone here on her website. We drove from Denver yesterday in the blizzard – what an adventure (to say the least). Usually it only takes about 9 hours, but took longer (coffee & scone stop always helps!). So glad that Coz has started racing. Looking so forward to watching him! Also, can’t wait to read everyone’s posts the past 10 days or so. Hope everyone has a wonderful Saturday!

I was sad Coz’s debut wasn’t as we all hoped, but I have the feeling his head just wasn’t in the race. It looked like a workout. With more maturity and training he’s sure to improve. Remember, Zenyatta’s first race was very late in her 3 year old year. He did look beautiful though.
Cathleen
Coz is just a baby I think the race was a learning experience for everyone and now they know where to focus his lessons to move forward. And I know everyone is comparing him to Zenyatta, naturally of course, but perhaps he has more of his father in him than his mother. I read on another site that his race yesterday looked like Bernardini ‘s first race.

One Lucky Dane Pulled Up After Workout, Off Derby Trail
San Diego Horse Race April 18th, 2015
We have our first post Derby-preps defection.
Bob Baffert’s hopeful, One Lucky Dane, was pulled up in his work at Santa Anita Saturday morning and vanned off the track. He appeared to walk off the van okay and it was later discovered that he had lost a shoe in the leg that rider, Rafael Bejarano, said felt off when he pulled-up the colt.
But Baffert later told Jay Privman of DRF.com that the colt began favoring the left front leg as he cooled out and while it does not appear to be anything obvious, One Lucky Dane is off the Derby trail.

Update: 11:43 PDT Saturday April 18 2014 San Diego Horse Racing
Trainer Bob Baffert reports that x-rays showed the start of a condylar fracture in the left front of One Lucky Dane. He said they will insert two screws to stabilize the fracture and the colt will be out a minimum four months.
Terry Crow
Minimum is right. Serious injury for a young horse.
