Coz & Isabela: An Update

Cozmic One retired from the track in 2017 to embark on a second career as a hunter/jumper. He is trained and managed by Isabela de Sousa and her father, Sergio, at De Sousa Stables in Lexington, Kentucky. Notably, Isabela and Coz appeared together at the 2018 Retired Racehorse Project Thoroughbred Makeover.

Paulick Report recently published an article about their progress that can be read here, and Isabela has this exclusive update for Coz’s fans:

Coz had some time off last year, and then we turned him out for the winter, like we do with all of our Thoroughbreds. The break helped him mature mentally and physically since the 2018 Thoroughbred Makeover.

We had our first show back together in June of this year, and I can’t say too many good things about his performance at that show. Ever since he came back into work I told my dad, “I really want to work on the basics, make him stronger, and help him be the best he can be.” By that I mean we are doing a lot of flat work to make him straight, lateral work to keep him flexible, and gymnastics and grids to help the shape of his jump so that he can use himself better.

As everyone knows, Coz has a very strong personality and can be tricky to ride—this improves as he matures mentally, and he is making a lot of progress. He’s a big horse, and he has the coordination that his size requires. We have been jumping him so small for a long time, so he doesn’t try too hard over the jumps, which is okay. At home we just work on the shape of the jump, as the height never really daunted him.

My dad has taken over the reins for now, since I am heading off to college. I’ll still ride him when I can. We aren’t worried about how far he will go in his new career, it’s his “retirement” and we want him to enjoy himself without any pressure. With all the shows being canceled I’m not sure when Coz and my dad will be making their debut, but I certainly know they enjoy each other, and he is a happy horse!

    According to the article, she can’t be bred to Frankel due to the bloodlines being too close. She will be bred to Kingman.

    Dear Z Fans:

    Just went to the Forum to check on TT’s I’myoursugardadddy. He was the only remaining foal if TT’s and afternoon being rescued from the track was living on the grounds of the Boys Republic School in Chino Hills, CA.

    Sadly there was a post stating that last year he sustained injuries in the paddock that were so severe he had to be euthanized. RIP beautiful boy.

    TT and her little ones were unlucky in this life. May they run free in Gods Heaven. Love and Hugs, JB

      This is such sad news. TT was so faithful to Z — we will never forget her. She had only two foals, and now both are with her. I am very sad that I’myoursugardaddy suffered this fate. ?

    So glad that Enable is being retired sound. Will miss her on the track. Hope her baby with Kingman is wonderful.

    Right now, I would vote for Swiss Skydiver for Horse of the Year!

    Bloodhorse article states that Winx lost her foal, a filly. Sad for her. Hope she recovers quickly, wishing her all the best.

    Oh my, so sad to read that Winx lost her little one. Speaking of which, before I had to start dodging fires, it seems like I read that Zenny might have been bred back to Candy Ride. Has anyone heard anymore about that possibility? We’ve actually had a drop or two of rain in our area and even a flake or two of snow up on Mt. Bachelor and a slight chance of a flake or two of snow down a bit where we are. The best news of all however is that all the fires are either completely out or completely contained. PHEW! maybe now I can get back to enjoying my visits to this blog.

    Dear Kathy R and Z Fans:

    Just read the owner’s press release on the Forum. Doesn’t state what caused the loss of Winx’s filly. Could be same as why Z lost Z16 (meconium aspiration) or Z18 (abortion caused by infection) or another issue, of course. The press release indicated future info at an appropriate time.     Dear Judy,
    Thanks for the great videos. Frankie truly loves Enable! They were quite a team and will be missed, but it is good that this beautiful mare is sound and healthy as she heads to retirement. Frankie will visit, I’m sure, and he will bring her some Polos mints, too. Sweet❣️
    Yes, I have thought of Sheena, too. Thanks for posting the 2018 Breeder’s Cup win by Enable and Frankie in honor of our dear Welsh friend.

    Late Happy Birthday wishes to Ann and Debbie. Hope you both had wonderful days.
    So sad about Winx little girl. Hopefully, she can have another baby.

    Just read that my boy Nadal is going to Japan. I was so hoping he would end up at Claiborne with Dad! From what I have read Shadi takes very good care of their horses. Good luck to Nadal and dates with lots of pretty ladies.

    Hope all of you remain healthy. My neighbors are recovering from Covid. Thankfully they did not have to be hospitalized.

      Thanks for posting Steve’s article. He is so spot on. This is the year of the fillies and mares. Thanks to Fox Sports 1 & 2, I have seen all of them race. They sure are better than the boys. Swiss Skydiver is The Horse of the Year!

      I checked ZEL’s Equibase chart just yesterday. No Workouts at all and even the Workout heading was gone.
