Cozmic One retired from the track in 2017 to embark on a second career as a hunter/jumper. He is trained and managed by Isabela de Sousa and her father, Sergio, at De Sousa Stables in Lexington, Kentucky. Notably, Isabela and Coz appeared together at the 2018 Retired Racehorse Project Thoroughbred Makeover.
Paulick Report recently published an article about their progress that can be read here, and Isabela has this exclusive update for Coz’s fans:
Coz had some time off last year, and then we turned him out for the winter, like we do with all of our Thoroughbreds. The break helped him mature mentally and physically since the 2018 Thoroughbred Makeover.
We had our first show back together in June of this year, and I can’t say too many good things about his performance at that show. Ever since he came back into work I told my dad, “I really want to work on the basics, make him stronger, and help him be the best he can be.” By that I mean we are doing a lot of flat work to make him straight, lateral work to keep him flexible, and gymnastics and grids to help the shape of his jump so that he can use himself better.
As everyone knows, Coz has a very strong personality and can be tricky to ride—this improves as he matures mentally, and he is making a lot of progress. He’s a big horse, and he has the coordination that his size requires. We have been jumping him so small for a long time, so he doesn’t try too hard over the jumps, which is okay. At home we just work on the shape of the jump, as the height never really daunted him.
My dad has taken over the reins for now, since I am heading off to college. I’ll still ride him when I can. We aren’t worried about how far he will go in his new career, it’s his “retirement” and we want him to enjoy himself without any pressure. With all the shows being canceled I’m not sure when Coz and my dad will be making their debut, but I certainly know they enjoy each other, and he is a happy horse!

Happy Friday all!
I’m happy to report that our Hovis was able to write his usual column today and doesn’t seem to have lost his sense of humor (although I must say it is a bit hard to come to a conclusion about the current state of affairs). He has at least tapped into his inner Hoverine persona, and of course we all continue to send prayers, good thoughts, and positive vibes in his direction.

Most of the good racing seems to be at Woodbine this weekend. Glad to have Belmont back, and hopefully Santa Anita will be able to return next week. The fires out there continue to be beyond dreadful, and prayers to all of our western Z fans.
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Sandy,
Thanks once more for keeping us in the Hovis Loop. This is very disturbing to say the least. Great admiration for the good humor exhibited by our Hovis and his mum, Karen. Sincerely hope the dynamic duo of Herman and CNSM can come up with a successful plan. Healing prayers for Hovis. ?

Yes, it’s good to to see Hovis’ showing typical British stiff upper lip, but it must be tough for all connections. Will remind you all again that Sheena knows the boy well and will be keeping watch. I’ve great faith in her. Hugs

Still catching up. So much to talk about. First , love , luck and all the best wishes in the world to our beloved Hovis. The same goes for Gladys may she get through her race safely. As for those responsible for mistreating all the lovely horses in their care, I’d love to see them put together with the humans who knowingly or unknowingly started at least one of the really huge fires burning over here and throw them all into that fire. Better news. I just saw California Chrome’s boys’ video. Great race. Also just saw Tapit’s Tango. Love the name. Hope he gets to keep it. He’s quite the stunner. Last but certainly not least Best wishes to Kim Potter. I apologize if I missed anybody two or four legged. May everyone stay safe during this tumultuous time.

Dear Sandy and Martha,

Hi all,
Some not so good news, I ‘m afraid. Decided to just go with Karen’s whole post rather than try to paraphrase. I know you all will be sending prayers and hopeful thoughts.
Sandy
All
Just a very brief note to let you know that there won’t be a diary tomorrow. I just can’t.
Unfortunately, after a much brighter weekend Hovis started struggling again earlier in the week and despite upping his pain relief slightly, he hadn’t picked up. I called the vets this morning and Herman and CNSM came out again this afternoon.
The upshot being that we’re not getting on top of the infection and Hovis was in significant pain. We were therefore left with very little option but to try one last radical approach. We have tonight cut most of his hoof away (the sole) to try and physically remove the infected tissue. I didn’t want to drag him to a hospital or a strange place at this stage, so we’ve done it all at the yard “field surgery” style, acknowledging the risk we’re taking. There are no photos as frankly it looked like a butchers shop and no one needed to see it.
Its binary now – either this works, or I will be letting him go in the next week or so. We have no more rabbits to pull out of hats. That’s it. We’re done.
In himself he was munching away on his hay quite happily when I left him but equally he’s had his foot nerve blocked for Danny to be able to cut away and we’ve filled him full of IV pain relief. He’s likely to be extremely sore over the next few days so we’re trying everything we can to keep him comfortable.
The plan at the moment is for Herman to come back out on Monday to change the pressure dressing (unless the giant oaf gets it off before then, in which case it will be yet another emergency vets bill over the weekend) and take a look and then we wait and see for a few more days. And then its decision time.
I’m sorry if this is coming across as overtly clinical but its honestly the only way I can write this down. I have sobbed all evening (including all over CNSM and Herman) but in some ways the dice is rolled now. When you are faced with zero options then it makes it simpler – we had no choice from a welfare perspective and that makes it much easier. There is no doubt, no second guessing, no what ifs. He was in pain, we weren’t managing it, it wasn’t going to get better and I didn’t want his potentially final weeks to be in a strange place away from the people who love him the most in the world. I also trust my incredible vet and farrier to advise me and that’s what we’ve done. For better or for worse. Its not about what I want or don’t want – it’s about what’s right for him.
So, for maybe one final time I’m asking for every vibe you have going spare, every prayer, every inch of goodwill – because that’s all I’ve got left to fight this with. It’s purely down to him now.
Kathy
Dear Sandy,
Thank you for notifying us. All good wishes and prayers going out for Hovis and his family, who love him so. I have worried so much about him. Every time I hear about recurring abscesses I always remember back to Barbaro’s battle. It’s never an easy thing to deal with.
Regards, Kathy
